If you’re new to witchcraft, let’s clear something up right away—there’s no “perfect” way to begin.
Seriously there is NO perfect way to begin. Just pick a day…an hour, a minute and begin.
Most people stumble onto this spiritual path with curiosity, excitement… and a few misconceptions along the way.
Don’t be afraid though, that’s part of the magick….the learning, the growing, the mistakes! All of it!
But there are a few common mistakes that can make things feel harder than they need to be.
One of the biggest? Buying all the tools before learning the basics.
It’s so tempting to grab every crystal, deck, and candle you see (they’re beautiful, I get it, I want all the things too! lol).
But tools don’t make the witch—YOU DO.
To begin with…your awareness, your intention, and your connection to energy matter far more than anything you can purchase. Start simple. A candle, a quiet moment, and your focus are more than enough. Once you feel comfortable with that – then start buying the things, aligning the days, colors, moon phases etc. The more you connect with yourself the more powerful you will become. Once the tool are introduced and consecrated, you will begin layering and stacking those things and you will be unstoppable! ![]()

Another common misconception is thinking spells have to be complicated to work.
Long chants, rare ingredients, elaborate rituals… they can be powerful, yes—but they’re not required. In fact, some of the most effective magick is incredibly simple. Whispering intention into your morning coffee, lighting a candle with purpose, or setting energy before you walk into a room—that’s real magick. Don’t overcomplicate what is meant to flow naturally. You do not “fail” as a witch if all you do is light a single candle.![]()
And then there’s the one that often gets overlooked: ignoring grounding and protection.
This is your energetic foundation. Without it, everything else can feel scattered or overwhelming. Grounding helps you stay centered and present, while protection keeps your energy clear and supported. Even a few deep breaths, imagining roots connecting you to the earth, or setting a simple boundary of light around you can make a huge difference.
If you’ve made any of these “mistakes,” you’re not doing it wrong—you’re learning. Witchcraft is a relationship with yourself, your energy, and the world around you. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be real.
Blessed be
