It’s Friday again, lovelies! And not just any Friday - today we are happy to celebrate both Samhain and also enjoy the lighter side of the date with Halloween.
With both of these in mind, I submit the following:
What is your favorite holiday, pagan or otherwise? How come?
Do you like bread? If so, what’s your favorite kind?
What’s your favorite time of the day? How come?
Do you have a favorite thing you like to cook or make in the kitchen? Tell us about it.
Is a hot dog in a bun actually a sandwich?
My answers:
I have to say it’s Thanksgiving! It’s all about the food, with friends and family, without any pressure of gifts or religious tension between participants. Eat! Watch football! Take a walk and look at the leaves! Collapse on the couch! Then - eat some more! No one will judge you! It doesn’t get much better than that.
I love bread - just about any way you want to give it to me. I used to bake quite a few of my own loaves; that has slowed down. I do still like making banana bread and pumpkin bread - quick breads, no waiting for the dough to rise. But a hot crusty loaf with a bowl of soup and a salad - yummy!!!
I like a quiet early morning time, sipping coffee, though it can sometimes be interrupted by one of the cats puking up their breakfast. Second favorite is late afternoon - cats are usually lazy, and it’s a great time to catch up on my reading.
Hmm. I like to cook a lot of things. I’ll say soups - they come together fairly quickly, like split pea or cream of tomato (with bread!).
No. No, it is not. It’s a hot dog in a bun, not some cuts of meat or melted cheese between 2 slices of bread. Silly question.
Halloween. I always used to ask myself something no one else did: what I want to be when I “grow up.” It is an exciting and hopeful time for me.
It seems like I eat a lot of it. After all, bread is one of the biggest donations to food banks, possibly second only to beans. My fave seems to change with the seasons. Right now, it’s French bread (toasted with shrimp). Biscuits are a close second, coming to the fore as the weather cools for gravy dishes, cinnamon, or garlic.
I’m an early bird, often getting up before the birds. I like the quiet when it seems like there’s no one else in the world. Yet I can’t seem to get much done because I have to honor quiet hours. Can’t be the elephant dancing in a tutu.
Once upon a a time…
I’m not allowed to give out the recipe because I promised my mother I wouldn’t. She was upset that everyone in the family liked her pumpkin bread, but no one wanted to make it. I seem to be the only one with a copy, since my cousins searched her recipe books and couldn’t find it. She must have destroyed her copy. It was a cross between pumpkin bread and fruitcake.
I’d say yes. Then again, I sometimes use regular bread instead of a bun. If it’s the bun that makes it not a sandwich, what do you classify a hamburger at a restaurant or a sub or hoagie? Are they all their own special things? It’s cool if they are. No judgement, here, just seeking understanding.
Halloween/Samhain. My Dad worked at a newspaper, and couldn’t always get Christmas, Easter, or Thanksgiving off. He did get most Halloween’s off, so that was our big holiday with the entire family. That was back when there wasn’t a time limit on Trick or Treating. I’d be out for about four or five hours, hopped up on the occasional Pixie Stix, and bring home like two pillow cases full of candy. Even with my parents dipping into my stash, it would last till February.
Add in the various holiday specials, the school and community carnivals, and the music? It’s just the best holiday to be a kid. Even when you’re in your fifties!
Yes! Does pizza dough count as bread? If not, then it’s either an onion bagel with cream cheese or an English muffin with melting peanut butter on it. So good.
Late morning. I’m finally awake enough to get things done. Before it’s time for my nap.
What I call Lazy Lasagna. A tomato sauce with onion, garlic, and mushrooms, some sort of pasta, and lots and lots of cheese. No baking or anything. Just yum!
I say yes, because if you put like chicken salad in a hot dog bun, it’s a sandwich.
It always felt like that long to me, too! I wondered later on if it was just my kid time-machine making it up. But I usually brought home a heavy pillowcase of candy, too!
Yes it does! Yummy! I’m with you on the English muffins, too!
Your Lazy Lasagna sounds delicious! It’s hard to go wrong with good tomato sauce and pasta.
I live in the moment, so the one that brings people together right now Have to say that Halloween is pretty convenient for stocking up on black candles and other altar things
Bread is always nice My favorite kind comes right out of the oven and is still warm
I’ve always been a night owl It’s nice and quiet, and the veil is thin.
I really like making homemade pizza, with a family recipe that I’ve added my own twists to. It’s absolutely heretic, it’s rectangular and uses ketchup instead of tomato sauce, but it’s delicious and I love it
It’s morphologically similar to a fist holding a sausage so it can’t be
Hmmm.. hard to choose between Samhain and Christmas. But I’m going with Samhain, because it has so much more meaning for me now that I am a witch. It used to be just running to the door every time the doorbell rang and handing out candy. Now there is so much more to it. I loved the ritual that Eric and I did up at the cabin. It made everything so much more meaningful.
I love most kinds of bread. We used to have a bakery down the street from where I grew up in England, called the Oven Door - the aroma was always so wonderful! So my favorite types of bread are crusty loaves like they used to have there. French bread, Foccaccia, Ciabatta… yummmm
Just as the sun is setting and the last rays of sunlight stream across the garden and the garden gets ready to go to sleep.
I’ll be honest, I just don’t cook. Thankfully, Eric has risen to the task or we’d both starve.
I have to say, it’s not one of the big questions of my life, but if I think about it, - meat inside, bread on the outside, I suppose it sort of is.
What is your favorite holiday, pagan or otherwise? How come?
It used to be the 4th of July. That changed… now I think Boxing Day. A peaceful let down from the frantic holiday season.
Do you like bread? If so, what’s your favorite kind?
I love homemade bread with a little more sugar in it.
What’s your favorite time of the day? How come?
Evening - sometimes late evening. I seem to come up with the best ideas then. I’m not a morning person
Do you have a favorite thing you like to cook or make in the kitchen? Tell us about it.
Mac and Cheese with a protein in it. Hamburger gravel is best. Add chopped tomatoes. It is a comfort food that feels great with every bite.
Is a hot dog in a bun actually a sandwich?
Sure. It is bread with meat and trimmings in it. Someone said they like them on sliced bread, too. I second that. Sometimes the bun is way too big for the meat. Two dogs sliced in half with condiments and between two slices of fresh bread are great.
On another note, Kirk was disciplined a few times. In battle, success favors the bold. In politics, it can be the opposite. Think Douglas MacArthur or George Patton.
Happy Friday, everyone! We’re heading into the weekend!
It is time for another round of the type of thought-provoking questions that will leave you wondering: “What the heck is Feathertip smoking?” (Maybe I’ve inhaled too many paint fumes while reaching the end of the upstairs painting project?)
Without further delay, here we go!
What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
What is a habit you’re trying to change?
If you had to eat a crayon out of a box of 64, what color would it be?
When you eat a taco, do you turn the taco sideways or turn your head sideways? And does the sauce and stuffing still fall out?
If someone wrote your biography, what would the title be?
Here are my answers:
On my 12th birthday, my parents surprised me with the announcement that I was going to go to Missouri to join my aunt and uncle on their annual trail ride. It was with a huge group organized through (I think) the American Quarter Horse Association, and they attended every year, taking their own horses in the trailer. I was told my Uncle Clarence was currently training a new horse just for me! I could already ride (this is a Western-style trail ride), but the gift included a new pair of cowboy boots and a beautiful new pair of chaps. I flew down to St. Louis by myself and was gone for 2 weeks. I got 2 ticks in my head, road for hours each day, and had the time of my life.
Staying in the moment. My brain wanders off and I have to run to reel it back in.
Oh, this is easy - periwinkle. I find periwinkle so beautiful, it ought to go down easy.
I do a little of both, but mostly turn my head while holding the taco stationary. And of course, the thing still drops all the inside goodness!
That’s why we love these, I don’t have to feel like I’m the only one in the room who’s been snacking on mushrooms
There are so many I think I’ll go with a week in Greece with all expenses paid
Falling in love with people who are not available for that kind of thing
Some bright and tasty looking one, like purple or aqua
I don’t actually know, I go into this nom mode and don’t remember what’s happened during it, but the taco is gone and my clothes are usually clean, so I have to be doing something right
It’s very rarely that I wear my hair up anymore, literally and figuratively Life is so much more fun this way
Awww thank you I’ve had other trips paid by some wonderful lovers, but this one was with my parents Tasty food, lovely times on the beach and in the sea, cozy evening walks in the setting sun, it was perfect
It’s funny, my girlfriend’s the best, and her other girlfriend is also amazing, but still… Think I need some bitter taste to go with the sweet
You got it
I was thinking of a few other titles like “a walking mess of complexes”, “too strange to live, too weird to die”, or “into the night she flies”, but it’s hard to capture it all under one title Cat got my tongue, literally!
Hmm, this one is difficult for me. I mean, do you mean as a child, or an adult? But really, I think the greatest gifts I’ve had aren’t really physical. I mean, I got a purple purse and a pink panther plushie, both of which I loved like crazy as a kid. I’ve got other things as an adult. But it’s the gift of help from a good friend when you need it, or the gift my parents gave me by making the holidays magical, despite the fact that we didn’t have much money. Things like that I remember more than anything else.
Spending too much money. Especially on decor. I am not doing well on this effort, but there it is. LOL!
Umm, ew. If I had to, it would be a bright green one. It would show up on my tongue the most.
I usually eat a soft taco that’s homemade and stuffed to the gills. So I turn my head, and yes, half of it falls out onto the plate. That’s the best kind of taco!
Somewhat early on, an unknown person put my name in for a position I wasn’t qualified for but knew I could do. It changed our lives.
What is a habit you’re trying to change?
I have habits, but I like them. So… not anything I dearly need to fiddle with. I could ask the S.O. but ‘Never ask a question you don’t want the answer to’ seems wise.
If you had to eat a crayon out of a box of 64, what color would it be?
Orange… It would match what comes up and wouldn’t be as disgusting.
When you eat a taco, do you turn the taco sideways or turn your head sideways? And does the sauce and stuffing still fall out?
I had to think about that. I definitely turn my head at times but I think I also twist the taco. And, of course, I wear part of it on my shirt afterward.
If someone wrote your biography, what would the title be?
“Never Trust a Naked Pyromaniac”
Hmm. And then there was the chicken “sandwich” Kentucky Fried Chicken put out a couple years back- meat on the outside, toppings in between. I don’t think it caught on; I haven’t seen it since. It was odd enough to make me wonder: how do I hold it without getting my hands messy? Do I eat it like the French do, with a fork and knife in small bites which don’t come back when I put down my hands? Or like some males and teens: stuff it all in the mouth and swallow without chewing?
