Fun Friday (Part 4)

Tom Brady said it. It was unclear then, too. I like it.

I do that (by just getting up and doing something else) - which is why my sleep cycle is weird. But I woulld rather have that than staring at the ceiling for hours.

Whaaaat?! It’s amazing that they’ve held out! From what I was reading, banks were among the first businesses to latch on to the idea when it really took off.

Your Daddy was a maverick - did his own thing, his way! I also happen to love plain butter on pancakes.

Your list of syrups sounds remarkably close to my mom’s - she loves blueberry syrup the most, though. And those silver dollar pancakes are the absolute best!

Ugh - I’m sorry. But I’m with you on sleeping pills in any form; they make you groggy for hours and hours, which is even worse. I’d rather muscle through occasionally and catch up when my body lets me.

I don’t think I’ve seen this one - and I’ve been known to do seasonal marathons of The Twilight Zone! Maybe once it started I’d remember it, but that story alone should have tweaked my memory.

Totally with you on The Monsters episode - it’s amazing.

Agree 100%. What a great program (overall)!

Of course they do! You’ve collected several interesting sounding titles recently!

Always be ready.

That’s what I remember, too! I never have been to one - so it sounds like they changed their format. Too bad, because it seemed like that’s what gave them an edge.

ooo, I don’t think I’ve even heard of this butter! Sorry that they’ve taken it off the menu, it seems unique.

Plenty of adults get by with 4 hours sleep - everyone’s wired differently. It does sound like you make up for it during the daytime. It’s good that you’re able to follow your own sleep rhythms.

Agreed - I think I had heard that it had been resurrected, but I don’t think I’d bother much with it. It’s not Rod Serling.

Some of them can be, but quite a lot of it is just fun weird camp. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: And some are amazingly eloquent commentaries on 20th century mores.

That’s so lovely!

 Thank you - I think I’ll mention this to my husband! (Kidding; he’s already making my meals and helped me outside earlier.)

Drive-thru banking is big on this side of the pond. If you just want to make a quick deposit I like that better than walking up to the outside drop-box or doing it by phone. I must be too old school to trust the technology!

Completely agree about the grocery store. That’s something I really need to do in person.

Oh my - your waffle sounds like a yummy dessert! :face_savoring_food:

Oh, bless your heart! That doesn’t sound very restful at all. I do agree it’s best not to fight it by laying there staring at the ceiling - I’d rather read downstairs until I’m drowsy again. I think going outside would wake me up completely for the day!

Brilliant 60’s American TV camp. Some episodes are just amazing - some are kind of silly, and a lot are in-between but still tons of fun! All in B&W.

I remember you telling us about your special wand! I agree that ā€œfoundā€ items" seem so much more valuable and even personal. I hope you’ll share your experience with the new Tasseography set when you use it - sounds intriguing!

Thank you! Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Moonbeam!

It is lovely to be looked after once in a while. Your Husband is a gem :gem_stone:

I don’t think I would trust it but as you say it is the normal practice, I do online, telephone but also use the cash points and also the pay by card at the grocery stores etc. I do like to carry Ā£20.00 in cash just in cash there is a problem with machines.

B&W films and music can make things more scary :face_with_peeking_eye:

You should! The old one, not one of the newer versions. It’s a great series that really sheds a scary light on humanity. Makes you think.

No, they USED to have a drive-thru, but closed it for some strange reason.

I love those! I wish I could have them now, but with my diabetes, I don’t dare. I’m allergic to the sugar-free stuff, so yeah. And you can’t just put a little syrup on pancakes. You gotta drown them!

They do me too, but what I do is take a fourth, and then leave off the next night again. Wait and see if I need it.

It’s a good one, but not talked about much.

Hey, you never know when the zombie apocalypse will happen! And with the way food recalls go, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened with food chain.

IHOP put lingonberry butter on Swedish pancakes- made with sour cream. I found out later that lingonberries are related to blueberries and huckleberries.

That sounds very good, and very unusual. Not surprised it was discontinued, but it seems a shame that companies don’t keep special little items like that around.

I’m sorry, love! As always, I have so much fun reading everyone’s answers I forget to post my own.

~1 I mainly use drive-thru at the bank. I don’t do a lot of physical interactions with my bank; it’s nearly always online. The occasional odd check that comes my way I prefer to sit in the drive-thru line to make that deposit and get an immediate receipt from the teller.

I so rarely eat fast food that it’s generally on a road trip situation. I’ll end up inside the fast food restaurant in that situation, just to get out of the car and walk around.

I’ve picked up prescriptions in a drive-thru a few times, but those are also few and far between, so if I happen to need an Rx, if there’s anything else I can get from the store I’d just as soon go in.

~2 I’m one of the few who do not care for syrup. It makes the pancakes soggy. I like dollar-sized buttermilk pancakes (no chocolate chips, whipped cream or even fruit), and I like them browned, so a couple of pats of real butter melting over them is quite yummy to me! I like the smell of maple syrup more than the taste.

~3 I get insomnia occasionally, usually when I’m tense over something that’s coming the next day. I had insomnia a lot more when I worked in medical practice management. It was a busy, hectic job. The largest practice I managed had 6 physicians and I had 27 employees. That’s a lot of schedules to work with.

These days, when I realize I’m not going to sleep, I practice deep breathing, like in yoga or meditation. No meditating, just focus on a deep inhale/exhale. Biology teaches us that this simple action physically stimulates the vagus nerve and sends signals to our brains to activate the parasympathetic nervous system - (yes, I had to remind myself of that from my old textbook!). But it works! It’s science, y’all!

~4 I love The Twilight Zone and Rod Serling, in particular! There are so many great episodes, it’s hard to pick favorites. I do love the one called ā€œWill the Real Martian Please Stand Up?ā€ because it’s so campy, doing its best with the make-up and technology of the time period - and the title itself is a play on a game show where three people all claim to be the same person and the contestant has to guess the real one based on questions, the final question making the big reveal. Lots of fun there.

Also: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, which is a brilliant view of suspicion of the unknown and stays relevant today. Time Enough at Last is a little tragedy.

I think those are the themes that make The Twilight Zone so memorable - themes of fear, suspicion, yearning for lost youth/sentimentality, what represents beauty. On and on. Rod Serling was brilliant.

I painted an homage to him by titling this oil pastel ā€œDimension of Imaginationā€ - a phrase he made up and included in an opening of the show.

I laugh when I look at it!

~5 I don’t buy much for my practice these days beyond candles. I can cobble together an altar (when I want to use one) with items around the house.

I do save certain feathers and the chrysalises from the butterflies that stay with me for awhile. :butterfly:

Good evening @Feathertip you do have a quite a few to read and you then kindly reply to each one of us.

They would go soggy with syrup. The ones I make are crepes they are crisper I think but if I add too much syrup they do go soggy. I think buttermilk pancakes and butter would be lovely as they are thicker and fluffy.

My goodness that is a hard professional career with a lot of responsibilities and organisation. I can understand when you would have periods of insomnia. I am sure you made a difference to your colleagues and patients whilst in post.

Beautiful painting.

Brightness Blessings

Here we are again - another round of Fun Friday! :balloon: :sparkler:

This is the last Friday of July - and the last DAY in this month!

  1. How was your July? Did everything go as you planned?

  2. It’s National Mutt Day! This is a day to celebrate all the mixed-breed pups that have come into our lives, either when we were kids or right now! Despite the somewhat derogatory name, a mutt can be trained and is as smart and responsive as any purebred. Did you grow up with a dog - or do you have one now? Is your dog a mutt? A purebred? Tell us, and let’s see your pics!

  3. Tomorrow, August 1st we celebrate Lughnasadh (Lammas)! It’s the first of our seasonal harvest celebrations. Do you have any special menu - or ritual -planned for tomorrow?

  4. What’s your favorite board game? Do you still play it, or was it more of a kid thing?

  5. How much time do you spend just gazing out the window? (I mean at home, not while at work!)

I’m running out the door (as always) to get my week-end errands and shopping done. I’ll be back later to check in and post my own answers.

Have fun! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Eh, so so! Not bad but not great. Hopefully, August will be better, but I’m starting with another sleep study unexpectedly on Sunday, so yeah.

I had a Yorkie mixed with something growing up! I miss Muffin; I was just thinking about her the other day. She was a sweet, if overly loving dog. She’d been the neighbor’s but he kept her tied up under his old heap. She was always oily and dirty. I’d visit her every day, going to and from school. There came a really bad snowstorm, and I freaked the heck out, worrying about Muffin. I don’t know what my Daddy did, or how much he paid, but he walked in the snow up the street and came back with Muffin. We were buddies until she passed.

I used to play The Game of Life. But yeah, I got old and paying bills stopped being fun. Plus, the little pegs went everywhere.

About a half hour each day? Depending on what’s going on. I’ve got a tree right out my window close up, and bushes, but we hardly see squirrels, and no branches are low so I can’t see any birds. So while it’s lovely, looking at bark for so long gets boring. LOL!

Oh, I forgot #3!

I’ve got Brioche, Lemon blueberry bread, and bagels! I’m all set to go! I’ve got creamy garlic chicken and mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and squash too! Yum!

Wow, I’m first today! Hi y’all, looking forward to what you’re gonna say!

Crazy! I’d gotten used to a certain pattern for the month- errands and non food items on the 3rd, food on the 11th, and then peace so I could get in some house cleaning or organizing. I knew there would be some hectic days as my driver sold her trailer and moved wherever she was going- even if that were to be a homeless shelter, but I didn’t expect not having any time for cleaning!

The person who promised to buy the trailer ghosted. My driver had trusted him, and now has nowhere to turn: cannot stay in the trailer court after the 14th, nowhere to store the trailer, no money to move, and nowhere to go. Then she got wrapped up in a blanket she was attempting to shake out and fell onto concrete. :face_with_head_bandage: She was in the hospital several hours- they had no room for her, so they put her into a supply closet. :joy: Now, she’s on crutches and shouldn’t be out, but she had no food or TP in the trailer so she could sell it and get out. We had to go out yesterday just so they could get food and clean bums. I had to dig out emergency funds to cover it :money_with_wings: because neither of us get paid until the 3rd, which is after the school sales, this year.

I guess I shouldn’t complain. If she has to remove the trailer on my birthday, I won’t have any out time, this year, so my day will be silent and still. I can rest then.

The one good thing is getting winter stock early. The last two cupboards aren’t cleaned up yet, so I’m panicking about having that area filled. Yet it isn’t all that bad.

Nope. The bark of a dog hurt my ears and terrified me in my youth. I liked the neighbor’s Honeybear, but she was so old! I think I remember someone saying she was a collie/ lab. She’d come over to our yard, and I’d share my split pea and ham soup :teacup_without_handle: with her while sitting otherwise motionless on Mom’s bench swing.

All my plans have been cancelled due to the emergency from yesterday and the Back to School Tax Free Weekend before payday. I generally get notebooks and office supplies for the winter, seek unicorns, and stock up on non-cook foods which most kids take to school during this sale. Otherwise, it’s just too hot to be outdoors right now. I bought a mini bag of salted, chocolate covered caramels yesterday as a rare treat, and ended up with a gooey lump… and people wonder why I stock up on chocolate and frozen foods during the winter. It’s just too hot to transport such things out here in summertime.

I grew up as an only child with a mother who disliked games of any kind, in a neighborhood with no other kids. What are board games? The only things I could get my mother to play were Yahtzee :game_die: and Go Fish, :fishing_pole: and those maybe once a year, depending on whether or not we were dangerously snowed in. I was more the type to put together puzzles :puzzle_piece: or do word searches. I still have word search books. I don’t even have a table big enough for a puzzle anymore.

While my driver and her grandson lived near enough for daily visits (about the first 2 years we knew each other), I did collect things like Uno, a normal deck of cards, mini Boggle, The Ungame travel edition, travel Yahtzee, and a homemade version of Scattergories. Very few games on the market are for solitary players.

If you would have asked about computer games, I’m just as light weight. Since I don’t see in 3D, I cannot do most digital games. I’m limited to, again Yahtzee, :game_die: card games, :joker: word searches, matching- like that candy game :candy: that was so popular a while back, jigsaw puzzles:puzzle_piece:, and hidden objects. :face_with_monocle:

None at home. Never did. I’m not much of a people watcher, and there isn’t much nature out here. With my vision issues, I do need to have my activities close to me so I can see them. I’d sit on a balcony during a storm :cloud_with_lightning_and_rain: or ā€œwatchingā€ (more like listening to) a parade going by, but I’m more comfortable without a balcony at all. Being on the first floor with windows overlooking public sidewalks is so much like living in a fish bowl that I don’t open my blinds all the way- just enough to get some natural light inside. I don’t feel safe otherwise.

Traveling is a different matter. I used to read all the time while in a car or bus, but now I spend all that time watching the world go by. Part of that is so I know where I am and how to get back to safety in an emergency. Subconsciously, it seems I don’t trust anyone or anything anymore, anywhere.

What, didn’t they learn you can’t sleep normally from the first one?!? Tickle torture them!

Oh - that is unexpected! Good luck with this sleep study tomorrow, love!

That is such a sweet thing for your Daddy to do! :smiling_face_with_tear: Obviously he convinced the ā€œownerā€ that a better home could be had for little Muffin. You must have been walking on air! I love it.

I never played that one! I heard of it, but somehow it never made its way into our house, and I don’t recall any of my friends having it.

Wow!! That sounds like a fantastic lineup! Happy Lammas! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

(I forgot my own order too, so no worries. )

You probably hear more action than you can see from that vantage point! A tree that big will get some attention from the locals.

You’re #1 with me, bay-bay!! :trophy:

Oh, my! That sounds like a lot of moving parts to deal with. I’m so sorry for the situation your driver finds herself in. Sending good wishes her way that it all works out in time.

That might have been why she wasn’t threatening to you. Probably a quieter, gentle nature. Your sharing ritual sounds very sweet!

Understandable! And I’m sorry for the ongoing heat in your area. It does make it awful to try to get our for any reason.

They’re certainly not for everyone. My mother always liked Yahtzee, too so we played it a bunch. She usually won! She always said it was less about the rolls of the dice and more about strategically placing the points.

Not too likely, since I’m worse than a lightweight - I literally know nothing!

Yeah, I don’t think I’d like that, either! But I agree with the traveling part. It’s lots of fun watching the world go by and people-watching, too.

Thank you. She could definitely use any positive energy she can get right now!

Very true. I focused on the things like straights, 3-4 of a kind, and full house first. Any failure there can be relegated to counting the matching dice, the lowest numbers can be made up by larger matching sets. If you get 3 of each of the numbers, you will get the bonus, but an extra five or six easily makes up for missing lower numbers.

If you’d like to try a few, I get mine at Hidden Object Games - Free Download, Full Versions | GameTop They have several types of games played on Windows.
