Obscure facts about New York State

History of the United States and New York is a collection of resources designed to complement the New York State Social Studies Framework.
It was called history when I went to school. Social studies? One of those archaic terms like ‘good citizen’.
I took NY history in 7th grade. I’d like to say it was great but I was 12, you didn’t like anything at that age.
I was born in Horseheads, NY. I know, it’s an odd name but the reason it was named that was terrible. It was named for the bleached skulls found of pack horses left behind by the Sullivan Expedition(1.).
OK, having gone this far, I remember and slept through a lot of this and it’s happening again. But I’ll make a few more statements and take a nap.
An infamous POW camp was there in the civil war, the inmates called it “Hellmira”.

It was a prison.
Today, it is a maximum-security prison for male inmates and is operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
