[October 4th is Saint Francis of Assisi’s Saint Day.](https://beaheart.com/blogs/recent/9-ways-to-celebrate-saint-francis-of-assisi?srsltid=AU7gw4UBfPnpf606BgytZN1LbIOYe9WoeLBN8gZiGkYd-dBjMd_NKKhh) He’s like the patron saint of animals, and on his Saint’s Day, many churches offer to bless people’s pets. So I thought I’d post some Pet Treat recipes today so that everyone could make up some homemade treats if you want for the day! Hope you like! **Pet Treat Recipes** **Cat Treat Recipe** **Ingredients:** 1 can of plain water packed tuna or 1 small chicken breast 1 whole egg 2 tablespoons of oat flour **Directions:** Drain tuna completely, or make sure the chicken is fully cooked and dry. Mix in the egg. Add oat flour 1 tablespoon at a time. Go slowly. You want a texture of slightly damp sand. Portion into small, pea sized treats. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 F for about 12 to 15 minutes or until the outside is lightly golden and firm to the touch. Let cool before serving! Store finished treat in refrigerator in air tight container for up to five days. **Notes:** Variations: 1. Swap tuna for salmon. Good for senior cats. 2. Used shredded cooked chicken and replace half the oat flour with 1 tablespoon of plain pumpkin puree. Good for hairballs. 3. Use one small can of sardines packed in water, no salt added instead of tuna. No seasonings! Safer for cats. Three crumbles of treats a day for an adult cat. Not a handful. Do not let your cat graze all day. One in the AM and two in the PM. Rotate treats each week to keep cats interested. So if you’re interested, watch it!_ Recipe courtesy of [14 Human Foods That Fix Almost Everything in Cats (99% of Owners Have No Idea) by Steve Cooper at YouTube.com](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa6Kiw19UMQ&list=PLJ_V6adszDnE&index=1&t=611s&pp=iAQBsAgC) [![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/sa6Kiw19UMQ/maxresdefault.jpg "14 Human Foods That Fix Almost Everything in Cats (99% of Owners Have No Idea)") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa6Kiw19UMQ&list=PLJ_V6adszDnE&t=611s) \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **Pupcakes – dog cupcakes with fluffy frosting!** Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 25 minutes Total: 40 minutes Yield: 12 pupcakes **Ingredients:** Pupcakes: 2 ripe bananas (150g/5oz after peeling, ~2/3 cup mashed) 1/2 cup peanut butter, smooth or creamy (Note 1) 1/3 cup honey 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups flour , all purpose/plain OR wholewheat/wholemeal (Note 2) 2 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 cup oil , vegetable, canola, peanut or olive oil 3/4 cup water **Directions:** Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (160°C fan). Line a 12 hole muffin tin with cupcake liners. Place bananas in a bowl and mash with a potato masher until smooth as you can get it. Add peanut butter, honey and eggs. Whisk well until smooth. Add flour, baking powder, oil and water. Whisk until smooth. Divide between cupcakes until 3/4 full. Bake 22 minutes until the top is golden, or skewer comes out clean. Transfer to cooling rack and cool for 30 minutes before topping with “frosting” Frosting: Place potato in a large pot of water. Bring to boil, then cook potato for 20 minutes until very, very soft and starting to crumble on the edges. Drain, then return into empty pot. Add yogurt, honey and water (starting with 2 tbsp). Beat with electric beater for 1 minute on speed 3, increasing to speed 5, for 1 minute or until smooth and creamy. Add more water if needed – it should have a soft consistency like frosting. Transfer to piping bag fitted with a 1.5cm / 3/5" round nozzle (Note 3 for other nozzles). Pipe in swirling motion onto cupcakes, top with dog biscuit. **Notes:** 1. Peanut butter – make sure the peanut butter doesn’t contain Xylitol which is an artificial sweetener that is not good for dogs. Kraft peanut butter does not contain Xylitol which is what I use. If you are unsure, go for all natural peanut butter (health aisle of supermarket) which is just pure peanuts. (Then use the leftovers to make [Thai peanut sauce](https://www.recipetineats.com/thai-chicken-satay-peanut-sauce/) for yourself!) 2. Flour – I’d ordinarily use wholemeal/wholewheat flour because it’s got more nutrition than white flour, but I’m out of stock and trying to minimise grocery outings! 3. The consistency of the potato frosting isn’t suitable – it just won’t hold its shape (I tried and ended up with a total mess). 4. Storage – these have kept well for a week, hasn’t lasted longer than that. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge (to ensure potato doesn’t go off). Combine seeds and pellets in a medium bowl. For small birds, (Finches, canaries, budgies, cockatiels) Chop cranberries, coconut and walnuts in food processor for small to medium pieces. Don’t chop for large birds (Cockatoos, Macaws ) Add fruit and nut mixture to seeds and combine in a larger bowl. Add honey, 1 tablespoon and increase by 1 teaspoon until firm. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon flour on mixture and. knead, adding more flour as needed. Roll out flat on lightly greased cookie sheet or put in muffin tins. Bake five minutes. Cool until room temperature. Serve with fresh fruit and veggies for a lovely birdie meal! May be frozen & defrosted as needed. Recipe courtesy of [Cockatiel Cottage.net](https://www.cockatielcottage.net/biscuitsnbones/birds59cc.html) \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **Oatmeal Raisin Balls for Birds** **Ingredients:** 2 large baked sweet potatoes 1/2 cup chopped raisins 1 banana 1 cup shredded carrots 1 cup diced peaches 1-1/2 cup quick cooking oatmeal **Directions:** Bring oatmeal to a boil, cook 1-2 minutes & drain water. Set aside to cool. In food processor or blender, (or mash with a fork) blend sweet potatoes, banana, peaches and carrots until smooth. Add oatmeal and mix or puree until smooth. Stir in raisins with wooden spoon. Roll into small balls and store in Ziplocs. You can also drop by teaspoons into ice cube trays for freezing instead --easier and less messy. Refrigerate or freeze and defrost as needed. **Notes:** Note: This recipe has been adjusted. It originally had 1-1/2 cups of uncooked oatmeal Oatmeal, as well as raw sweet potatoes, contains enzyme inhibitors. Before serving them to parrots they should be cooked to deactivate enzymes. Cook on high in the microwave for 4 minutes. Check that the chicken is cooked through by slicing one of the cubes in half. Be careful, as they will be very hot! Carefully remove the boiled chicken cubes from the water and set both of these aside. Whisk/scramble the egg, and then tip the chicken cubes into the egg mixture. Using a frying pan on low heat, gently fry the eggy chicken until it is just losing its runny texture. Transfer onto a plate to cool. **Notes:** Serving Size: Half the mixture is one serving Keep the broth from boiling the chicken to use in Chicken Broth Popsicles! In a large bowl, combine the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon. Stir the ingredients together until they form into soft dough. Remove the dough from the bowl, and gently knead it into a ball shape. Place the ball of dough onto a lightly floured surface. (use whole wheat flour). Roll the dough into a large circle, about ½ inch in thickness. Use your favorite cookie cutter shape, or cut into squares using a pizza cutter. Place pieces onto a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the treats are firm. **Notes:** This recipe makes 48-60 small biscuits and 24-30 larger biscuits. Tips & Tricks: Check the peanut butter label. Make absolutely sure it doesn’t contain xylitol. Use pumpkin puree. Don’t accidentally grab pumpkin pie filling. Flour your work surface. A little whole wheat flour will keep the dough from sticking while you roll it. Choose your own size. Make small treats for smaller dogs and larger biscuits for big dogs. No cookie cutter needed. A pizza cutter makes quick work of cutting the dough into simple squares. Bake until firm. These are meant to be a firmer, biscuit-style dog treat. Cool completely. Let the treats cool before serving or storing them. Frequently Asked Questions: Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter? Dogs can eat peanut butter, but checking the ingredient label is extremely important. Some peanut butter and other nut-butter products can contain xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Current veterinary guidance likewise warns owners to verify that peanut butter is xylitol-free before using it in homemade treats. For this recipe, choose a creamy peanut butter that does not contain xylitol. Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin? Plain pumpkin is commonly used in homemade dog treat recipes, including pumpkin-and-peanut-butter treats. The important distinction for this recipe is to use plain pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling. Goat cookies from Hobby Farms 🐐 **Ingredients** 1 cup uncooked oatmeal 2 cups raisin bran (crunched up works best) 1 cup raw wheat germ 4 large shredded carrots 1 cup molasses ½ cup applesauce **Preparation** Combine molasses and applesauce in a bowl. Combine all other dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Gradually add the molasses and applesauce mixture to the dry ingredients to obtain a thick dough. (If more dry ingredients are needed, add a little more raisin bran and/or wheat germ to the mixture.) Shape into desired-sized balls and place onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 300 degrees until dried out and done (about 30 minutes). Can burn easily. ---
