Long before pumpkins lit human’s front porches, it was the turnips that carried the flickering glow of Samhain.
In ancient Celtic lands, people carved grim little faces into hollowed turnips, placing embers inside to ward off malevolent spirits as the veil thinned between worlds and to light a path for living.
When the tradition crossed to America, the old ways met new soil—pumpkins, were very abundant and WAY easier to carve than the turnips.
Each glowing pumpkin face keeps that same purpose, ward off the dead, and light the way for the living.
As the veil grows thin and the night deepens, may your heart be steady, your spirit clear.
May the ancestors walk beside you in gentleness, and the old fire within you burn bright anew.
Blessed Samhain — between worlds, may you remember and be remembered.
Blessings!
