Ra Pyramid, Enlil Cylinder Seal & Erra Amulet

I’ve been packing up some things to move and rediscovered these. I really love these pieces, so I thought I’d share them. They’ve been in this box since I bought them, but I will finally give them a home when we move. :black_heart:

Sumerian/Akkadian Cylinder Seal & Impression

The preparation for harvesting a successful date crop is represented here. The figure holding a frond of the date palm is a vegetation deity most likely Enlil who leads a male devotee by the hand while another female devotee carries a bag that would hold the pollen for manual polenation.

Enlil invented the mattock or hoe and cared for crops. His daughter Nisaba, also known as Nina was a goddess associated with crops, grain, dates and all manner of vegetation.

The god is appealing on behalf of the mortal worshipers to Ishtar for a successful and bountiful crop as she was the supreme goddess of fertility.

A mace can be seen at the feet of the seated goddess and a prominent star directly in front of her is the celestial symbol of Ishtar.

Erra Amulet: Protection from Plague

Among the most important passages of text is one that states the plague & pestilence shall pass over the house that has the magical amulet in use.

Such was the ancient fear that could grip the cities of Mesopotamia when people witnessed plagues that were beyond the capabilities of the highest healers and sages.

Pyramid

The images shown feature the sun god Ra in falcon form with prominent sun disc resting on his head. Directly above the large disc is the horizon glyph which is stylized representation of two mountains with a small sun disc rising above the valley between the peaks.

The other design features an individual in the pose of adoration to gain the favour of the sun god and to ensure a continuation of life in the hereafter. The sun being the ultimate symbol of renewal and rebirth in the Egyptian mind was a popular choice for inclusion in tomb imagery and especially pyramidions.

I was so obsessed with Ancient Egypt when I was a kid. I loved the goddesses who were both nurturing and fiercely protective. I was hoping to also get a heart scarab after this, but it will have to wait. (Apparently, heart scarabs usually have a spell inscribed underneath to help the deceased stand up to the rigours of passing into the next world safely and justified.)
