The positive sides of January

January is one of the least popular months of the year, according to many articles and polls in the US. It’s understandable why few say it’s their favorite. The holiday season is over and there aren’t any big events to look forward to for at least another month or two. The days are shorter. Not to mention colder and snowier if you live up north.

But… despite all that, January is not all doom or gloom, and here’s why, according to some articles that I have read.

  1. January is the first month of the year. A new year. A time for new beginnings. Now is the time to set goals, break bad habits, etc.

  2. The holiday season is over. Which means, it’s time to breathe a sigh of relief and rest. Stores aren’t crowded. There’s no pressure to buy (and wrap) presents for friends and family. And so on.

  3. People tend to stay indoors more often during the darker months of the year, and that is the perfect time to practice some self-care, and look inward through mediation.

  4. People tend to think we gain daylight in the summer and lose it in the winter, but the opposite is true. With the winter solstice behind us and the rebirth of the God, the days are slowly starting to get longer. By the end of this month, sunsets in my area will be after 5:30 P.M.

Thank you for these reminders Kasandra  It’s easy to get caught up in the gloom of the darker winter months but you’re right! We are gaining daylight now instead of losing it :sun: and that’s a great thing to celebrate!

I definitely think it’s the perfect rest period, as the sun is returning from the solstice. Like a time to pause and reflect.

Ahh…thank you soo much for this, I forever will agree to your positive highlights about January! Afterall, it’s my b’day month & I love it!! Okay…at least I don’t despise the cold and chilly weather! In fact, it tells us about how we can thrive in adversity at its peak! And moreover, love that too! Blessed be dear @Kasandra :gift_heart:

Gosh, these are all really great points. I love the reminder about the light returning and the days getting longer, but the one that resonates with me most is this:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I tend to get super stressed during the holidays. December into the first few days of January is like rocket fire one thing after the next. But now that we are solidly and safely in the new year, it’s so nice to be able to just… breathe.

January is a great (and very welcome, if you ask me!) time to rest, recover, and prepare for the year ahead. I never thought of it so clearly before, but now I’d say it actually might be one of my favorite times of year!

Thanks for this positive reflection about January, @Kasandra!
