Challenge Entry – Star Anise Luck Spell
I tend to use Star Anise in spells a lot because it smells a bit like liquorice.
Its powers include authority, awareness, banish, consecrate/bless, divination (esp. pendulum), energy, luck, power, psychic ability, purification, skills, and warding off the Evil Eye.
Star Anise (Illicium verum) is the star-shaped spice from China and Vietnam, and is not to be confused with Anise (Pimpinella anisum).
Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum) is poisonous and should not be ingested. The dried and powdered leaves are burned as incense in Japan. It is impossible to visually distinguish the pods from Chinese Star Anise.
Tonight the Moon will be in Pisces so it is perfect for using Star Anise.
I want to attract good luck, but the Moon is waning, so I am going to use the gold cord that I stored moon energy in from the waxing moon phase earlier this month. During the spell it will be around the Goddess candle.
The numbers for luck are 1, 3, and 6. I chose one tree, hawthorn (in the wand); 3 botanicals with star anise, cinnamon stick, and allspice seeds; and 6 stones including green aventurine, citrine, garnet, obsidian, red agate, and tiger’s eye.
I chose a dark blue favour bag and candle for luck.
Symbols for luck that I will add to my altar are daffodil, hyacinth, and four-leaf clover.
The chant will be:
Daily I count my blessings.
Nothing seems that distressing.
Found down deep in my Grimoire
Lucky spices, lucky star
Keep the luck flowing my way,
Keep me safe and let luck stay.
I’ve been such a mess it only just occurred to me that there would be a new challenge up.
This is another perfect one. I’ve been trying how to best organize my herbs since I had to rearrange everything like 8 months ago so maybe I’ll work on that for my entry. Or polish up the purifying powder recipe I just made. Or…
this is what I was looking for, thank you very much my sister!
I translated it, he explained it super!
thank you very much!

Practical Devotion: Ritually crafting
Keeping with the devotional theme this blog is shaping up to be, I was moved to share one of the practices I hold most dear in regards to devotion : the crafting of the consumable items for the keeping of the shrines. Most specifically, the incenses, the candles, the perfumes used on the altars and Icons in worship and ritual.
This is the crossroads of my practice where witchcraft, wortcunning, pharmakeia and devotional practices conjoin and it’s very enjoyable to transit that little liminal space and experiment with resin blends, different plant spirits and spices to craft something that is suited to only you and your original path.
This work vision has allowed us to weave a bridge between our pre-formed practices from across the sea and this sacred land.
In the Sanctuary of Hekate Propylaia we strive to form alliances and a meaningfull relationship with the sacred territory we inhabit. In crafting our blends we honour the earth, the genius loci and Hekate when we use the local beeswax from the traditional beekeepers, the plants we grow ourselves or that we can ethically source and forage as much as possible on this gorgeous tiny little volcanic island that has adopted us.
Aside from all this, the creation of our own ritual consummables can be seen as a devotional and meditative practice in itself, since it would be created in a sacred space in a ritual setting.
A handmade gift that you have put into so much work, dedication and care will always carry a special meaning for the person receiving, just by the act of being made specially for them.
I recently gifted a dear friend that came to visit a bit of my crafted incense and Florida Water (recipe to come!) and it really feels like giving a tiny part of your flame to someone else. Ideally, this is the same kind of relationship we would like to have with Hekate and the deathless Gods themselves, so the little extra effort is always very welcomed and high regarded in your worshipping.
Here I share with you the creation of the Incense for the Sanctuary’s winter rites.
We start by lighing the Fire in the altar and singing the Orphic hymn to Hekate to ask her to bless our work to begin and we pour a little libation of milk, honey, water or sweet red wine.
We call upon the plant spirits and the Genius Loci to aid and bless our work as well and pour a libation for them as well.
We gather our plants, in this case we had canarian pine resin and canarian mugwort (artemisia canariensis) I ethically foraged, copal resin, frankincense, lavender, rosemary, sage and roses from our own plants, sarrapia (tonka bean) I brought from Venezuela with me, saffron, orange peels and local honey.
We blessed the mortar and pestle with Palo santo (also brought when I moved, much easier to locally and ethically source on those parts of the world, but there are some sources to get it this way on this part of the ocean as well)
Then we mixed the ingredients in the mortar carefully, first the resins giving them a little smash to get them to know each other, then the herbs and the sarrapia spice. I like to rub them in my hands while thanking them to get them to “wake up” and release their aromas and oils.
We add a tiny little bit of honey to bind everyone together and set it in a jar to let it marinate for one week before using it.
After this I like to thank all of the spirits again and pour a small libation to close the ritual crafting.
I hope this would inspire you to create your own blends, and experiment with it. We usually make a few different ones depending on seasons and needs (for example we have one oracular mix with 3 kinds of mugwor that we use for those kind of rituals)
CHALLENGE ENTRY
For my entry into this challenge I planted my outdoor herb garden. While planting everything, I manifested love and growth for my herbs.
I have not had any luck with indoor growing of herbs so thought I’d give outdoor growing a try.
My indoor non growing garden
For some reason I’m unable to post a pic of my outdoor garden.
Beautiful Mystique! I see you are getting close to nature I am so happy for you! Mother Gaia is going to bless you!
I got some beautiful plants for my tiny garden
I got a lamp so when I start my garden they don’t get overtaken by the sun!
i’m a bit late on growing my tomato but I think it’s gonna be just fine. I better hurry. That is the plan. I was supposed to go to the Celtic festival but it’s raining and it’s just not gonna happen so I’m gonna focus on the garden.
I thought about writing a sign for my garden. It’s gonna be the mystical garden. Here is what the sign is gonna say it’s in Greek and it is my offering to Hecate! Μυστικός Κήπος

Weekly Witchy Challenge for Amethyst:
I decided to learn about a new herb, and I’m glad I did. I think I’ll look into getting some of what I researched. It sounds useful! Hope y’all like it!
Arnica
~ Protection
~ Purification
~ Improve Psychic Skills
Arnica is a well known herbal remedy for bruises, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation.
The Arnica flower, also called Mountain Tobacco, is a symbol of strength and toughness. It is also used by empaths to protect from spiritual attacks and low vibrational energies.
Spreading Arnica around your home is said to protect it and bring fertility to your garden.
To keep unwanted people and energies out of a home or business, boil arnica blossoms in water and rub the resulting mixture on the door and window frames.
At pagan harvest festivals, arnica can be used as an offering to make sure there is a good harvest.
Harvest the flowers when they are at their best, around Midsummer.
Element: Fire
Planetary: Sun
Astrological: Leo, Aries, Aquarius
Resources:
That’s beautiful Amethyst! I wonder if it will grow in Texas? I’m going to research Arnica and see.
I’m not sure, but I guess it would be. It’s certainly a great herb to grow!
CHALLENGE ENTRY
For this challenge, I made my own incense which i have called Triad of Abydos.
It contains Frankincense, Myrrh, Rose Petals, juniper berries, Bay Leaves and Jasmine.
Here are the reasons for choosing each ingredient:
Frankincense represents the transcendent nature of Osiris, the god of the afterlife, who is closely linked to the spiritual realm.
Myrrh is purifying and symbolises the transformative aspect of Osiris as he undergoes a journey of death and rebirth. Myrrh is also linked with embalming and preservation, reflecting the rituals associated with Osiris.
Roses are often associated with love, beauty, and nurturing energy. They represent Isis as a goddess of love, fertility, and motherhood. Rose petals embody her caring and nurturing asppects.
Juniper berries have protective and regenerative properties. They symbolise Horus, who is associated with protection and kingship. Juniper berries represent his protective and regenerative powers.
Bay leaves symbolise victory, wisdom, and purification. They represent the combined energy and attributes of the triad. I added Jasmine as a means of connecting spiritually to all 3 members of the triad.
The recipe is 2 parts Frankincense and 1 part of all others. I used tablespoons. I also included macco powder to ensure it burns appropriately. They amount was calculated as a percentage of the other ingredients.
I kept some loose incense in a jar and use the rest to make sticks and cones. The sticks are a little thick and dont look terribly pretty but I am hoping they dry lighter! I will leave them to dry for a few days.
The loose incense certainly smelled lovely.
Blessed be
Alan
You need to come visit the PNW. There are tons of mushrooms here… I will start posting some…

I made my own Thursday Salt or Witches salt over the past two days.
Yesterday:
I crushed the egg shells from the sigil eggs that I made for Ostara, sea salt, and then the following Herbs because they are said to have protective properties according to the Baba Yaga Book, That I just wrote a review for.
Oregano
Nettle
Mugwort
Peppermint
Clover ( which I grew in my garden )
Chamomolie
Rose (which I collected from the roses that grown on the land of my apartment )
Thyme
Rosemary
Slippery Elm
And then used activated charcoal cause I don’t have any ashes from things. Since I don’t burn things in my house. My partner has bad allergies and gets angry so I work on not burning things. Except for this recipe but I knew that they would be gone all day.
Today:
And I started in the morning. And you need to let your house air out it gets really smokey!!! ooops
At one point I started using the pestal to grind up the. herbs that were not fully dry before roasting them…
It took about 20- 30 minutes to roast everything
Please excuse my dirty stove… I promptly cleaned it after I smoking of the house…
**challenge entry **
Sorry ive missed the past two weeks, i returned to work after long period of leave and had struggled physically anf mentally so i ended up misding the last two entries.
Id been thinking about this challenge and was determined to give it ago despite how much struggling at the moment.
I thought alot about how i use herbs in various forms in my everyday life to add a bit of magic to everyday things. I came up with this list:
- eucalyptus/tea tree oil in my washing
- baby freschia, lavender and sweet pea washing powder
- apple, scarlet sunflower, red cranberry cleaning products
- sage and chamomile oil in the oil difuser
- herbal tea for health and wellbeing
- coffee and guarana face wash
- jasmine, sweet pea and freesia, berries and sandalwood in bodywash, hand cream and hand soap
- lavender, mint, vanilla oil in oil difuser
- lavender spray for spraying protection rune around my bed abd on pillow
- lavender abd cinnamon for body spray
And ok not all these are technically herbs but you get the idea… ive been tryimg to pick my items i use for everyday things based on what correspondence they represent and what using it for. I probably have wax melts or other oils too that have herb correspondance in it like i think one has clove in it amd id look through my oils and what im looking for and it be like my oil dufuser becomes a cauldron of sorts lol. I have a glass tea infuser drink bottle thats like a potion bottle. Im using everyday things to make my ordinary day just a littke bit magical which helpd me stay connected to my practuce even when um struggling to do anything big.
