Iāve read Big Blue. It was interesting but I didnāt do all the things. Anyone who knows me, knows that it is not a good idea to me to make something even dull and pointy, like my own athame. That was lies bleeding and the ER. LOL!
I guess since Iām an Eclectic Wiccan, I follow my own path. Iām not even sure sometimes if I can claim to be Wiccan because I donāt do formal rituals or whatever. I do what feels right. Maybe Iām growing beyond that label, who knows?
Now, there are a few Wicca A Year and a Day books out there. Iāve gone through Deborah Blakeās a couple of times. Very nice information and little informal spells. Fun to do when you find one that speaks to you.
When I first started out though, the books that called most to me is Scott Cunninghamās books, and I loved Amber Kās True Magick. That got me a good start and was one of my first books. Itās got some great ideas about ethics which is good for a new witch.
From the new authors, I think my favorite it Rebel Witch, by Kelly-Ann Maddox. Itās a wonderful book with all the basics, but with finding your own way at the same time. So thatās awesome.
But yeah, Big Blue is a huge commitment, so I wish you luck with that one. Unless you have it on Kindle, just carrying it around will build you up! LOL!
You need to tell me which Wicca A Year and a Day youāve got, it sounds wonderful! Good luck with starting that one!
I donāt follow the Wiccan path but have read a couple books on it and studied it. I have not read the two you mentioned. But, I do wish you much success on your journey!
Please keep us updated on how itās going and what you have been doing in the book if you few comfortable enough to do so! I love following others journeys and watching them grow. I even learn knew things from them!
I did not read A Year and A Day, but one of my first purchases 30+ years ago was Bucklandās big blue book. I did follow along with some of the things in the book, as well as Scott Cunninghamās Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner and Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, and I think I used my self-initiation ritual from one of Scottās books. I did get an athame immediately and carve my own symbols into the hilt, but I will admit, I am not drawn to using it in my current practice.
As to whether you wait a year and a day, a few months, a good moon phase, or do your self-initiation ritual now, my advice is do what resonates for you. I did not wait a year and a day, but then I had a gap of many years where I didnāt practice Wicca until magick came back into my life and I discovered my own path. Wicca (for me) was the perfect introduction and a lovely way to start my path. Magick has many options, diverse paths, and is so eminently customizable to personal beliefs and comfort.
The start of any journey is always the most exciting and confusing part! Donāt rush, donāt feel pressure, just enjoy the adventure
I have both of those Scott Cunningham books actually! I bought and read the Living Wicca Book first not realizing that it was the first book. I havenāt read the first Wicca book yet. Looking forward to it.
Hi lovely. Iām not Wiccan, everything I learnt about Wicca, I learnt here. The course in Spells8 is fabulous.
My practice has meandered all over the place to end up in the Nordic spirituality with a demonic thread. I follow Loki, the chaos god and itās him that has taken me on my travels. Thereās alot in Wicca. Iāve just bought a book that teaches Angelic Wicca, working Wiccan practices with Angels. Thereās also alot of Wiccan practices that also incorporate the Norse gods too. Itās a beautiful practice that can bring alot of peace and tranquility into this mad world.
Iām unfamiliar with that book, but I actually found so much information here on the Spells 8 website that I felt ready to do my self initiation on December 8th of last year.
That book certainly sounds interesting though, Iām glad you are getting started with it.
If youād like, add them and your experience with them to the book club.
My first Wicca book was Scott Cunninghamās Truth About Witchcraft Today. Back then, Silver Raven Wolf was āinā and Raymond Buckland was āout.ā Now, itās the opposite. It seems it doesnāt really matter in the long run. Enjoy your path and your books!
