Ancestor Connection Ritual

This should be done during the spring equinox when the veil is thing.

The Spring Equinox carries a liminal energy — a threshold between darkness and light, between worlds. This is a gentle, beginner-friendly spell for opening a line of communication with your ancestors.

Remember for this spell you only want to invite the FRIENDLY ancestors. The ones who protect, the ones who have love. Not ALL your ancestors are friendly.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

What You Will Need

✦ One white or cream candle — white invites spirits; ancestral energy responds to warmth
✦ A photo or meaningful object belonging to an ancestor (or simply write their name on paper) Don’t know any of your ancestors? That is OK…just simply write on a piece of paper - welcome friendly ancestors.
✦ A spring flower or green herb — daffodil, rosemary, or bay leaf all carry ancestral resonance
✦ An offering: water, wine, milk, or their favorite food or drink. If you are unsure, you can not go wrong with water.
✦ Optional: a small bowl of soil or salt to ground the ritual

PREPARATION

Setting Your Space

Choose a quiet spot — a windowsill, a table, or even the floor. Perform this at dusk or dawn on or near the equinox (March 19–21), when light and dark are perfectly balanced. Clean the area, then arrange your items in a way that feels meaningful to you. There is no wrong arrangement.
Take a few slow breaths. Close your eyes and feel the ground beneath you. You are rooted. You are held. When you feel settled, you are ready to begin.

The Ritual Steps

Light the Candle

As you light it, say aloud or in your heart: “This flame is a beacon. I light it to guide you to me.”

Watch the flame settle and steady itself.

Place Your Offering

Set the offering beside the photo or object. Speak your ancestor’s name, or simply say “those who came before me.” Let your heart be open — grief, love, gratitude, and curiosity are all welcome here.

Speak the Incantation
Read or speak the words below slowly, as if sending them into the air like smoke.
Sit in Stillness
After speaking, remain with the candle for 5–15 minutes. Watch the flame. Notice thoughts, feelings, memories, or even scents that arise — these may be their way of reaching back. You can write down anything that comes to you.

Close the Ritual
When ready, thank your ancestors: “Thank you for your presence. I carry you with me.” Snuff (don’t blow) the candle to preserve the energy. Leave the offering overnight if you can. Return it to the earth afterward — pour liquid onto soil, leave food outside for wildlife.

The Incantation

Blood of my blood, bone of my bone, you who walked this earth before me —I call to the friendly across the thinning veil, in the season of returning light.

Lend me your wisdom, your love, your memory. Let me feel you close as spring breathes again.
I honor you. I remember you. I am because you were.

As above, so below — the roots hold, the branches grow. So it is & so it shall be!

Feel free to adapt these words. Ancestral magick responds to sincerity over perfection — speak from the heart.

AFTER THE RITUAL

Signs They May Have Heard You
In the hours or days following, pay attention to: a song that suddenly comes to mind, a dream featuring someone from your lineage, the scent of something familiar and inexplicable, a bird that lingers near you, or a strong intuition or emotion with no clear source. These are gentle touches through the veil.

You can repeat this ritual annually at each equinox to deepen the connection, or whenever you need guidance and a sense of being held by those who came before you.

May your ancestors walk gently beside you, now and through all the seasons to come.

Thank you so much for this spell. My Mum always loved spring as part of her back garden was dedicated to this time of the year she had snowdrops, crocus daffodils :blossom:, tulips :tulip: hyacinths :hyacinth:and loved that they fought the cold, hard soil to bring spring to life. She always used to say that her plants were on wheels as if she thought if the plants were not happy she would try to move them so that they would thrive.

This spell will be another way I can connect to her and hopefully my late grandmother.

I am truly grateful for this special memory which has come to me through your post.

Blessings
