Angels and Goetic demons

Hi there everyone. Just out of curiosity, what is the Wiccan perspective on angles and demons ? I mean Goetic demons for example, like Belial etc. Do wiccans claim they don’t exist at all, or maybe they are also faces of the Goddess and the God, and also what is the opinion on working with these entities? Is it considered wrong, or is it ok for someone who is eclectic?

I don’t practice Wiccan but there are many here who do. I practice the grayer edging into darker. I myself see belial as demon. Have never worked with him but have done some work with satan. I know some who have worked with him and they have said that he is one of the darkest ones to work with. That you will have some form of backlash working with him. When working with any demon or god/goddess I always ask that what I’m asking for only be done if fully justified (if that makes sense).

Many years ago I did practice Wiccan and at that time any demon was not “allowed” to be worked with. They are harm none and only work with “white” magic. More mature based. The horned god and triple goddess are not any part of demonic or “darker” belief. Eclectic pretty much pick and chose who they will work with be it god/ goddess or demon. I hope I was able to help some.

Hi @norbert, welcome back!

I’m not a practicing Wiccan myself, but my understanding of it follows what Mystique mentioned. Here is a section from the Wicca course on Spells8:

Wicca is a religion of nature. The Goddess and the God embody the forces of nature and correspond to the mythology associated with the cults of fertility and hunt.

The power of the spirit realm is abundant with deities, spirits, and other entities that will help to aid in Magickal pursuits. Their energy and assistance are called upon in ritual as well as in spell work to increase and link our desires to theirs in order to produce a favorable outcome.

From Wicca Self-Initiation: Day 4: Deities

From this, I would say that it’s acceptable for Wiccans acknowledge the other deities, spirits, and entities, but all ultimately fall into the natural masculine and feminine energies that relate back to the Triple Goddess and Horned God.

When it comes to angels and demons as entities, I suppose it would boil down to how the caster felt about their energy and how they were choosing to work with the entities. Like Mystique mentioned, the Wiccan Rede promotes casting without harming, so working with entities associated with harm and violence would thus not generally align with the Wiccan Rede.

Again, I’m not Wiccan, so take these opinions with a grain of salt!

Mystique offered some great points that I’m going to second. When someone chooses to follow a specific tradition (be it a type of Wicca, Druidry, Buddhism, etc), it’s generally expected they follow the specifics outlined in that tradition. But eclecticism exists beyond the limits of any one tradition. It’s like a spiritual buffet - an Eclectic is free to take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and build their own unique practice.

With that in mind, there are Eclectic Wiccans - practitioners who generally follow Wicca with some exceptions or additions. If that path resonates with you, I’d encourage you to keep learning and follow it!

Blessed be :sparkles:

Hmmm… probably depends on what tradition of Wicca you’re following if any, if you have a lineage to adhere to, are part of a coven, or anything like that. Being eclectic and a solitary practitioner, it’s always easier to just follow your own heart.

Some of my thoughts… Wicca is a nature based religion, and nature has many shades, light and dark. The Goddess has many faces, light and dark, gentle and fierce, angelic and demonic. The Horned God is often connected to wild and primal nature gods like Cernunnos and Pan, rooted in the physical realm and its laws, including fighting for survival and cycles of life and death. Transformation is a huge thing for both, and that’s what magic is all about. Alchemy. Death of one thing and birth of another.

I’ve seen many Wiccans take one or several faces for their Goddess and God, from spirits who they feel affinity and connection with. Usually from the Celtic, Greek, Roman or Norse pantheons, as they’re the most well known. Angels and demons both carry a lot of stigma from mainstream religions, that many practitioners want to steer clear of. Still, Lilith for example seems popular. And Archangel Michael.

I’ve seen many people starting their witchy path from Wicca, and then sliding more and more towards becoming eclectic, or “just a witch”. I did the same too, realizing that my beliefs and practices couldn’t be contained in anyone else’s framework. I’ve always went with “use what works and feels right”. If that happens to match someone else’s label, great, I can use that to describe myself, but if not, no problem. It’s always fun discussing labels though, as no two people probably have the exact same definition.

Demonolatry (Demon/Daemon) Master Post

These posts discuss demons. I work with demons, they are the same family as angels and are not evil, scary or malicious. Some Goetia books will have you believe you can hold such beings by using angels to trap demons and force them to work on your behalf. Not only is this not correct, it is also disrespectful and problematic. The above posts look at demons from many angles, including the old gods being assigned demonic status. But the Goetia demons are wonderful to work with if handled with the same care and respect that you would assign any spirit.

Bless
