its a water pump, works by lifting the handle up and down which makes it a pressure pump. Forces air down to the water which pushes the water up the pipe. These are still being used in some places!

@Sarafeena_Sage You’re right, but in the olden days you kept a bucket of water beside the pump to prime it.

Oh yeah, the prime bucket! got to have that to get the water going. Its been a long time since I’ve seen one of those. Some farms still have them in Oklahoma.
