Astrology - Imum Coeli and Midheaven

Reading @Cosmic_Curiosity’s excellent book in astrology I ran into these two points in the birth chart I haven’t considered before, especially how they are related to each other. Often only the Midheaven (MC, Medium Coeli) appears in online generated birth charts, and there may not be a lot of information about what it means.

From Cosmic Curiosities:

The Imum Coeli (IC - The Lowest Part of the Heavens) is the Home Line or Home Point. It is the most private point on the entire birth chart and reveals what makes us feel safe and secure in the privacy of our own homes. The IC indicates how we interact with relatives and areas of intimate family life, including upbringing, personal history, and even childhood traumas. The IC helps us identify the nurturing parent in our lives and how we deal with our own issues. This point can also indicate what we need to create our own domestic bliss and how we set up a home for comfort and rest.

The Medium Coeli (MC - Midheaven) is the Career Line. The MC reveals aspects of our career and professional life. It is about much more than that, however. It shows our ultimate ambitions, the reputation we want to build and the legacy we want to leave behind. The MC may also indicate what society expects from us in return for the recognition we gain. The Midheaven reveals our attitude towards authority and order. It also points to our dominant parent and possible interactions with authority figures as we work towards our goals. Ultimately, the Midheaven reveals our calling in life.

(These appeal a lot to my Cancer Sun and Sagittarius Rising, respectively! So much that I wanted you to know about them too if you already don’t )

So how to find these points then? Let’s take a look at my birth chart for example.

I created this chart with https://astro-charts.com. The highlight colors are my own.

You can see the “MC” and “IC” in the chart already. Looking at the lines, my MC / Midheaven falls on Scorpio, and my IC falls on Taurus. Using the most common Placidus house system, the MC / Midheaven can always be found at the cusp of the 10th house (the house of career and recognition), meaning when we look at the inner circle (houses) it’s the line between 9 and 10. The Imum Coeli (IC) can always be found at the cusp of the 4th house (the house of home and family). The two always form a straight line across the chart, making them opposite signs.

Note that this only works in the Placidus house system. When using Whole Signs for example, things look very different. The IC and MC are still the same, regardless of the system used, you just can’t look at the houses to find them (as far as I know, please correct if you know better!)

What do all the different signs in these positions mean then?

Midheaven in Aries

With your career, life path, responsibilities, and long-term objectives, you can be a pioneer. You have the vision, although not always the follow-through. Self-taught and self-directed, you prefer to answer to yourself. While you can be excited by your tasks at the outset, they can grow tiresome later. After all, you feed off the spark of inspiration.

More than most things, you value your independence in the work you do. You don’t always like to look or plan too far ahead in these areas. With your reputation, you prefer to keep things straightforward, bold, and simple.

You excel in the areas of initiative, fresh ideas, vision, enthusiasm, and uniqueness. While persistent, you do grow tired if uninspired. It may be at this time that you start something new. Ideally, your profession allows you to take on new challenges.

You might have viewed your parents or caregivers as polar opposites–one was more lenient and cooperative while the other, competitive and assertive.

Look to the position of Mars by sign, house, and aspect for further refinement.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Boldly, confidently, aggressively, or assertively.
Midheaven in Taurus

You seek stability and predictability in your professional or public life. These areas of life tend to be slow to unfold or develop, but they’re steady and strong. You are a hard worker, often preferring to plod along steadily than to face challenges or innovation. You’re resourceful and possess lots of common sense in your profession. Preferring to learn your trade thoroughly and carefully, you are the one who others can count on.

Harmony and peacefulness are vital for you in any career–uncertainty is not your cup of tea. You’re not one to push for change if things are working decently. In fact, you’re inclined to keep the status quo perhaps a little longer than is good for you at times.

With your reputation, public matters, and life path goals, you’re sensible, practical, and consistent. You prefer to come across smoothly.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Carefully, sensibly, confidently, and patiently.
Midheaven in Gemini

You feel most fulfilled when you have the chance to express yourself, diversify, and enjoy some variety. Teaching, narrating, explaining, guiding, chatting, and connecting the dots can come naturally in professional settings.

This position is often associated with people who have two active professions at the same time. Or, the profession requires versatility and adaptability. You need stimulation in your career, and you also prefer to feel that you have options and some flexibility with your life path goals.

Work that requires reading, writing, or speaking and experimenting with ideas can figure strongly in your life, particularly as something you aspire to. Work that keeps you on the move, whether physically or mentally (or both!) or with the media and communications can appeal m0st. Manual or mental dexterity are themes.

If Mercury is under stress, whether natally or by transit or progression, you should watch for your words taken poorly or stretched and sticking with you for far too long. Nervous tension can be a problem. Watch also for fickleness or indecision negatively impacting with your reputation and career. You avoid dull or lifeless positions, and if you happen to have one, sticking to it or following through can be challenging. Your powerful observational skills can get you far.

Your early home environment may have emphasized the mentality, intelligence, truth, freedom, and conversation.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? With curiosity, mentally, objectively, or coolly.
Midheaven in Cancer

While you can be guarded in public situations, your warmth, nurturing, and care show through in what you do. You can take more time than most people to come into your own professionally, but you get there, and when you do, you do so with heart.

With a Cancer Midheaven, there can be some moodiness along the way as you pursue your goals. You’re sensitive to your reputation or image, and you tend to want to keep this fact to yourself. Nevertheless, you convey your kindness to the world through what you do. Without special care, your sensitivity could keep you from working to your full potential.

You’re talented at bringing intuition, empathy, nurture, humility, and warm humor to your craft or profession. You’re personable and likable, even if sometimes hard to get to know.

Your attitude toward your work, responsibilities, and goals can be strongly influenced by your Moon sign and the Moon’s aspects. You could work in a family business or take a similar path a parent took professionally.

Even though your energy and motivation frequently waver, you have a strong sense of responsibility. You need to intuit your way toward your long-term or professional goals rather than rely only on facts and logic. If you don’t feel something deeply, you can struggle–it’s difficult for you to fake it.

You have a powerful sense of what the public wants. You prefer that a pursuit engages your emotions and that you can do with heart and kindness. Healing, teaching, guiding, and managing can be strong themes in your career. Food, real estate, domestic needs, therapy, family, repair, catering, and education can also figure strongly.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Carefully but heartfully once you embrace it, emotionally, kindly, with protectiveness.
Midheaven in Leo

You need to feel in charge of your destiny, and you’re a natural manager or leader. A lot of heart and personality go into your career, responsibilities, reputation, or life path goals. Your ego is also strongly involved!

With a Fixed sign Midheaven, you don’t take a path or career lightly, and you don’t readily jump onto or off a track. You do things with extra flair or drama. You’re proud, and the image you project is something you need to feel not only good but great about. Whatever you feel on the inside, you project an image of confidence to the public. You prefer to be the boss or, at the very least, dictate your own direction.

You stand out rather than blend in. In fact, you shine in what you do, and you make a strong personal mark in your field. You can be skilled at self-promotion, but you also project such a warm, strong image that others want to promote you as well.

You can also be quite organized when it comes to planning and long-term objectives. With your career, you’re determined, persistent, honorable, competitive, and passionate. Often feeling like you are on stage, you enjoy performing and gaining recognition. You also expect a lot from yourself, and you want the best– and to be the best– in your chosen field. Once in a position, ideally an important one, you’re exceedingly loyal and committed.

You might see your parents or caregivers as especially strong personalities, with one far more outgoing and personal than the other.

The Sun’s position in your natal chart by sign, aspect, house, or condition, can give more clues to how you present yourself professionally or publicly and how you approach your responsibilities, long-term goals, status, and reputation. It can also point to your career potential.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Boldly, proudly, with extreme awareness of how you might appear.
Midheaven in Virgo

You seek to be orderly and efficient in your profession, and you prefer a tidy, humble image or reputation. People see you as quite put together, but you can be especially particular and somewhat nervous or inhibited in these areas. You can sometimes come across as more aloof or critical than you actually are. You’re service-oriented with a strong work ethic.

You have a strong sense of duty, and you put a lot of thought and mental energy into your career. There’s a perfectionist in you, which can sometimes delay you and can lead to indecision or frequent changes of direction. You seek to be correct and thorough.

You’re not a person who requires too much in the way of recognition or power over others. There can be times when you think or worry too much about your career, reputation, or life path. You would benefit from steeling yourself up and avoiding letting feedback sway you too much from your path. You’re not always comfortable in the limelight. Watch for taking on more than your share.

You are talented at analysis, hard-working, genuine, humble, and highly observant in your career. Somewhat risk-averse, you prefer to know every last detail before you make a big move.

You may have received very different messages from your parents or caregivers, where one is more practical and rules-oriented, and another is more compassionate and emphasizing emotional development.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Analytically, worriedly, with orderliness, reservedly, or conscientiously.
Midheaven in Libra

You weigh your decisions about your career or life path carefully, and you concern yourself with how your choices will affect others. You prefer not to rock the boat, and you seek (and usually find) the middle road. People see you as gracious and fair, and it’s important to you that you come across that way in public or professional settings.

You succeed in your profession by being relatable, fair-minded, charming, pleasant, balanced, ethical, moderate, and agreeable. You seek harmony and balance in your career and regarding your reputation–you don’t want to make drastic changes, statements, or moves. You’re an excellent mediator and quite relationship-focused in your professional dealings.

You do a lot of thinking, planning, and imagining about your career or life path and plans. Because you have difficulty with extremes or absolutes, you can be indecisive. Your presentation is balanced, and you’re a team player in your work. You have a powerful sense of what people want or of current tastes and trends.

You might see your parents or caregivers as vastly different–one who emphasizes socialization and tact, and another who values authenticity and being self-made or independent.

Your ability to cooperate, balance, mediate, and harmonize can take you far. Partnering can figure strongly in your work. While you’re flexible and adaptable, you’re also proactive and persistent. You are an expert at getting things done without stepping on anyone’s toes.

See also the condition, sign, house, and aspects of Venus for more clues to your career potential and attitude towards your life path goals, responsibilities, and reputation or status.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Fairly, graciously, diplomatically, in a balanced way, indecisively, artfully, or obligingly.
Midheaven in Scorpio

With career and reputation matters, you’re determined, passionate, intuitive, and perceptive. Your image is intense and possibly intimidating! However, you’re a healer, powerful, and competent.

You don’t readily take orders, preferring to forge your own path. At the same time, you’re loyal to your chosen profession, and you don’t readily change your focus or position. Still, your work and reputation can undergo dramatic shifts or transformations in your lifetime.

A parent or caregiver may have been secretive, reclusive, or self-contained, and you might carry over this energy to your responsibilities to the outside world. You prefer to be in control, not revealing your vulnerabilities. Still, you’re not as likely as others to follow in a parent’s footsteps or fall in line with their expectations–you do your own thing.

If planets in the tenth house or the tenth house ruler are under strain, watch for sudden turns of reputation, vengefulness, paranoid or emotional decisions affecting the career, and a tendency to shoulder more than is healthy.

Your talents are many, but you especially excel at investigation, analysis, research, psychology, and deep explorations of the unknown. You have far less fear than most in your career, and you can feel driven to uncover the truth. Your hunches are often outstanding, leading you to great places.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Resourcefully, wholeheartedly, passionately, determinedly, probingly, secretively, or skeptically.
Midheaven in Sagittarius

With your career and life path, you’re idealistic and optimistic. While far-sighted, you prefer not to plan too far ahead. You’re up for a challenge. There’s a bit of a risk-taker in you in these areas of life–you prefer to wing it, working on your intuition.

You “sell” yourself or your work through your good humor, positivity, cheerfulness, and commitment to truth and ideals. You have good energy for promotion and wonderful public appeal.

If planets in your tenth house or the ruler of your tenth, Jupiter, is under strain, you should watch for overdoing and over-optimism that leads to poor or impulsive decisions with career, status, reputation, or life path matters. It’s not always easy to finish what you begin simply because you excel at the big ideas part of a venture, and you might eventually tire of the details. There can be sharp changes in direction as a result. You might work on developing more focus and discipline.

You’re especially talented at seeing the big picture, bringing tremendous energy and spirit to a venture, helping and assisting others, selling and promoting, sharing ideas, enlightening, guiding, and teaching. With your career, you thrive if you have the space to move and grow–you don’t work to your potential if you feel cramped, limited, or confined. You’re attracted to professions revolving around nature, spirituality, humanitarianism, education, publishing, and broadcasting, to name a few.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Passionately, faithfully, optimistically, enthusiastically, irresponsibly, or spontaneously.
Midheaven in Capricorn

With a Capricorn Midheaven, there can be a slow and steady rise to the top. One parent or parent figure may have been markedly ambitious for you (or status-conscious), and another markedly not. You take a pragmatic approach to your career or reputation, and you have notable organizational ability. As you crave security, you’re willing to work for something long-term. You plod along, taking on a lot of responsibility quite naturally. You’re not always very comfortable or natural in the spotlight, but you’re somewhat ambitious. You have a strong sense of responsibility or duty.

Preferring to make change quietly, you don’t enjoy controversy in your professional life. While you don’t ask for assistance, you prefer it that way, but you can feel a little lonely in your position/profession at times. You tend to excel at tasks others find too difficult.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Cautiously, prudently, inhibitedly, guardedly, or responsibly.
Midheaven in Aquarius

With an Aquarius Midheaven, tenth house areas of life are a mix of unstable and stable, or these areas of life fluctuate between these states. For example, you might hold down a job for years longer than others, but then experience a sudden break from your job or industry. You’re a valuable worker who stands out from the pack–you don’t fit the traditional career mold.

You need to go your own way and do things your way! Innovation is your specialty with career, professional, public, and reputation or status matters. Because you work on inspiration, you need some freedom and space to work. Long-term goals are eclectic, unusual, or more happiness-oriented than material.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? With detachment, independently, with friendliness, fairly, uniquely, erratically, or inventively.
Midheaven in Pisces

With a Pisces Midheaven, you have a brilliant sense of (or intuition for) current trends. Frequently, you put spiritual goals above material ones. You prefer to naturally and intuitively gravitate to your career or move toward your goals rather than plan out the details or intellectually choose them.

You could have two jobs or your goals are multifaceted. It may be that you’re undecided or impractical regarding your career or life path. Committing to one particular path or even defining it can feel restrictive and devitalizing.

Your preference to feel or intuit your way in your professional or public life can be baffling to some. It might be all too easy for others to misunderstand you since you leave so much to mystery or you resist defining yourself and what you do. You may need to have an emotional connection to what you do in order to thrive.

One parent was more compassionate or freeform, disorganized or hard to define, or disillusionment is involved with this parent. You might view your parents or caregivers in such a way that you see one as more materialistic, critical, or emphasizing work ethic, while the other emphasized emotion, spirituality, or perhaps was inconsistent or absent.

You bring adaptability and flexibility to your career, goals, responsibilities, or reputation. While you’re not always practical, you’re highly intuitive. Industries suited to you are service, drama, dance, care, animal, spirituality, medicine.

You are charitable but a bit elusive or mysterious. While you have many interests and talents, you may need a push to focus or pursue one particular path. It may be best to seek something that you harmonize and vibe with–something that matches your spirit. Although meandering, once found, you can be very dedicated to your path.

  • How do you instinctively approach public or professional situations? Creatively, mysteriously, indirectly, faithfully, compassionately, intuitively, or adaptively.

Fascinating, but here’s my problem, how do you get an accurate birth chart if you only have a date of birth, and location, no time, just am or pm? Can you still get an accurate reading? :sparkling_heart:

For the Moon sign and the houses (and by extension, the rising sign and both of the points here) you need an accurate time of birth I’m afraid :slightly_frowning_face: For many of the planets, especially going outwards from Earth, the date should be enough, and the am/pm might help too going inwards towards the Sun. It’s all about how quickly the planets move from one sign to another. Moon is very quick, as you might have seen her cross the night sky in matter of hours. :white_heart:

This is neat! I pulled up my birth chart and it looks like I’ve got IC in Leo and MC in Aquarius (looks like I get a little break from all the Scorpio in the chart haha).

I had to read this three times I was so impressed with it - I couldn’t have summed up my home energy or eccentric career goals better myself! Spot on :+1:

This was fun! Thank you for sharing your astrology explorations, @CelestiaMoon :hugs: :star2:

Thank you, I was pretty excited about it too! :sparkles:

I love this feeling, it’s like being seen by the Universe or something :smile_cat: Loose pieces just falling in place :jigsaw:

I think I found where mine was hiding, right in the middle of the sky :joy: It’s a curious feeling, feeling that something must be there, but not seeing them yet.

This resonates with me a lot too. I was very loyal to my career path in tech, starting from first grade in elementary school! After getting my Master’s and some work experience, things couldn’t have shifted more dramatically. I went through a dark night of the soul, had a long journey of spiritual and psychological healing, and came through with a spiritual awakening. And I started feeling that I want to bring this healing to others too, be a guide with everything I’ve already gone through and opened up to. I’ve already been doing it to some extent here and elsewhere, but bringing money, reputation and all these big energies into it, it’s a lot. I love a good challenge though  :black_heart:

These do feel like things I’m drawn to, and what I’m drawn to I pursue relentlessly. I can see how they relate to both my past and future line of work. I do feel passionate to do my own thing, if I’m not allowed for whatever reason it makes me feel all jittery.

Yay, I’m happy you enjoyed it too! :sparkling_heart: I’m always happy to share what lights me up :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :star2:

I’m working on learning a lot of what was mentioned. It’s interesting to see how the rest of my chart plays a role in this, as well as how I was brought up.

Thanks for sharing, @CelestiaMoon :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Spot on. They remain in the same physical position on yhe chart but will not necessarily be in the 10th and 4th houses. Using the whole house, my MC is in the 8th house and IC is in my second. The sign stays the same.

My IC is in cancer and MC is in Capricorn. Funnily enough, these are the signs linked to the 4th and 10th houses.

Yes! The home is defifitely my sanctuary. Its my safe space and where i feel at ease. I could happily cozy up on the sofa under a blanket all day every day :relieved: if only!

I take my job seriously and put my all into it. I have had 3 bosses at my school in my time who have commented on me being the strongest teacher they have worked with so I would say i have a strong sense of duty towards my job and a desire to maintain that reputation. I wouldnt necessarily say i was uncomfortable in the spotlight…im in the spotlight all day in front of the kids. Put me infornt of a class of adults sbd it would be a different story though!

Thank you for sharing this (and for quoting my little book ). It was interesting to explore these points on the chart as they are often overlooked in favour of the big three.

Blessed be

Alan
