Athames, Bolines, and Other Magical Blades
Such an interesting and diverse subject.
A small Challenge entry.
Historically the Athame is a black, double edged blade with a black
handle. The one I found on line was beautiful at around 12”
long (4” being handle). Personally I would have found it ungainly
and hard to manage. As much as I liked it, I gave it a pass.
Choosing an Athame isn’t so easy. It may be ornate, decorated with
gold and if it doesn’t respond to you, it may not work for you. At the
same time you may find a rusty blade with a leather handle that calls you… Clean it up, bless and consecrate it. This could be the one. At the same time I have seen blades made of obsidian and other metals and minerals dedicated to different Gods or cultures. You must contemplate many things. Study about the Athame, its origin. Remember that it works on the spiritual level.
This will be an important tool for you, it represents air and should be placed on the eastern side of your altar. You can read more about the use of the Athame on Spells 8.+
The Boline is a physical blade. A smaller knife used for harvesting flowers, plants, herbs or carving sigils.
The Boline is a working blade, usually taken with you on walks in the field, forest or your garden. As with the Athame it can be consecrated.
I’m getting a headache so I’ll say goodnight and good luck with your sub
missions.
