Hello, I’m new to the group, and I just wondered if anyone had any tips on how to organise what they learn there are so many links within links, I’m getting a bit lost. Thank you
Hi, @Angels8! I’m Amethyst from Southern West Virginia. Welcome to the forum!
It sounds as if you’re needing to start what we witches call a Book of Shadows. That’s where you collect all your spell information, journal, herb and crystal information, anything you like! Every witch’s Book of Shadows is different. Mine in on my computer, but you can print things out and put it in a three ring binder. Or you can hand copy everything into a leather bound journal. Or do a combination. It’s all up to you! You can decorate it or not, heck even make it look like the Sanderson Sister’s Book, if you like the eyeball thing.
Oddly enough, it was Spell8’s video of how to make a Book of Shadows that led me here and got me to join. So this is a nice memory!
Here are a few links to get you started. But like I said, it’s up to you. If you like doing those fancy journals with pens and things, this should be right up your alley!
Tips for Starting a Book of Shadows
Yeah, couldn’t help but add that last one! LOL!
Nice to meet you, btw! Glad you’re here!
Hi, I’m Dan. Welcome to Spells8 and a world of information!
@Amethyst has shown you a common way to collect information with lots of links. Most of us, I believe, snag a lot of things so we don’t lose where we found them.
I started with a printed BoS but it got pretty big so I transferred to a digital one and arranged the downloads under main topics that I was interested in. I have a couple of computers so I make sure I update all copies as I save items. If you have cloud storage, that would be another way (and, of course, backing up to a local removable drive).
@KylaD had a popular thread on this a few weeks ago. It is HERE.
I still download and print out some things - like rune definitions and sometimes Tarot explanations so I can prop them up and use them while working.
I have been collecting spells and printables from all over the site and forum. In the site pages, a lot of pages are cross referenced, so I end up finding some of the same things fairly often. I found it helped me to start collecting from the lessons pages. They have a nice bar at the top so I can quickly see that I did capture those pages without having to waste a minute or try to access my memory. From there, I moved to the library of spells to collect all I could. That way, I could ignore repetitive links for the moment.
As for spells in the forum, I find that a little more tricky. I use hearts to show what I have read. Older posts, I will mute them once I have collected the spells. If the pages have not been closed (a lock beside the name so no new posts can be added to a thread), I could miss new posts. Thus this is not the ideal path to take.
I didn’t start collecting spells when I first joined. There was too much for me to get used to. Thus, I have read a lot of things which I haven’t collected. I get lost and confused sometimes, too. There really is a lot, here!
Good luck in whatever pattern you choose to use!
And welcome @Angels8!
As for previous books, I made myself a collection, not just one BOS. I’ve been studying since 1990, so there was a lot, all hand written. Many things have changed over the years, and will probably continue to do so. For example, what we called “moonstone” back in the 70’s is now called “opalite.” For ideas, you can check out my older BOS here:

Oh my goodness, i feel very blessed Thank you all SO much for your kindness, I never thought i’d receive so much advice and help.
Feel very welcomed, safe, and protected by you all. I shall go through everything slowly to make sure I am doing everything correctly. May I ask you questions on anything if I am not sure? Thank you
Hi @Angels8 ! You have gotten a lot of great advice here! I print out anything I want to save for later use and put them in a 3 ring binder. If I don’t have the time to print them right away, I bookmark them. In every post or comment someone makes there are 3 little dots in the bottom right corner. If you click that you will see what looks like a little ribbon. That is the bookmark. Then you can come back to them later and reread or print. Once I have printed, I click that bookmark again. It will pop up and ask if you want to delete. Click the delete. It will not delete the post, just takes off your bookmark.
And yes, always feel free to ask any questions at anytime!
Blessings
Hello @Angels8,
Welcome to the forum! I’m Bry, an Eclectic Witch and one of the moderators. It’s very nice to meet you
You’ve got some great advice already about how to stay organized. I agree with others, starting a Grimoire, Book of Shadows, Journal (or all of the above) is a great way to keep your magickal notes and favorite spells in one place. Your sacred book(s) can be handwritten or digital - I’d recommend experimenting to find what works best for you
Just want to pop in on that and say absolutely! You’re very welcome to ask away - while there are many resources around Spells8, I personally think the best resource of all is the coven. There are so many wise witches here, and people specialize in many wonderful areas of the Craft.
Feel free to make a new topic in the Q&A category anytime you have something you’d like to ask. We’re here and happy to help with your magickal studies!
Make yourself at home here - blessed be
I’m glad you feel welcomed! And don’t worry about being perfect. It’s one thing I learned is that you don’t have to be perfect. Flub up a chant, forget to light a candle at the right time. It’s all good. You can’t take yourself too seriously, because then you will never learn.
In many pantheons, there is an agent of Chaos, I think our favorite to blame chaos on here is Loki. LOL! But I think a certain appreciation of silliness is a great way to go about your practice. And it is a practice. You’ll never be perfect, so don’t worry about trying.
And like @BryWisteria said, questions are always welcome. It’s how people learn. And hey, you may ask something that makes others think and grow themselves and that’s a wonderful thing!
Merry meet @Angels8 and welcome! We’re glad to have you here.
My best piece of advice is don’t rush yourself. Take your time to explore and learn.
In my opinion, there really isn’t a correct VS wrong way to do magick. Everyone’s practice is unique, as it is what works best for them. Feel free to ask any questions!
There is a wonderful search function that will help you dig for more information in the forums!
Wow! Your question sent me down a rabbit hole of research and fun! I used up all my hearts for today, and it’s not even lunch time, yet!
Thank you. Please ask anything on your mind!
