Bastet Calling? The Spiritual Meaning of Cats Crying at Night

Last night, as I was about to fall asleep, I heard it: a loud, sad meow breaking the silence. My first thought was, “Is this just a random cat, or is there something more to it?”

Cats have always felt magical to me. They seem to sense things we can’t, and their cries at night feel like they carry a deeper meaning. Was it just a coincidence, or was there a reason for it?

Hearing a Cat Meow at Night: What Does It Mean?

If you’ve ever wondered about the meaning of a cat meowing at night, you’re not alone. Let’s explore what it could mean: a spiritual message, a sign from Bastet, or something else entirely? :candle::sparkles:

A Portal to the Spirit World

Many believe that cats are sensitive to energies and realms we cannot perceive. A cat’s cry in the night could be a sign they’ve noticed a shift in the spiritual veil. If you hear a disembodied meow, consider it a reminder to ground yourself and be open to any messages that might come through.

Spiritual Meaning of Meows

A Call to Intuition

Cats are symbolic of mystery and independence. When one meows at you—especially at night—it might be nudging you to trust your intuition or pay closer attention to something you’ve been ignoring.

Protection or Warning?

Hearing a cat cry could signify they’re alerting you to a spiritual presence, or even offering protection from unseen forces. If you feel uneasy after hearing a meow, cleansing your space with herbs like rosemary or sage can invite positivity.

Superstition and the Night Cry of Cats :black_cat:

Historically, cats crying at night has been linked to superstition:

Egyptian Roots: In ancient Egypt, cats were sacred to Bastet, the goddess of protection, fertility, and the home. A cat’s cry might be seen as a sign that Bastet is calling you to reconnect with her energy.

Witches’ Familiars: In European folklore, cats were often associated with witches. Black cats were even believed to be witches in disguise. A familiar/power animal’s cries were thought to be warnings of impending magical or supernatural events.

To interpret the spiritual meaning of the meow, ask yourself:

  • Was the cat visible or unseen?
  • How did it make you feel—calm, curious, or unsettled?

What Does It Mean When a Cat Meows at You?

If a cat meows directly at you, this is a direct communication! Spiritually, it could mean:

  1. A Message from Beyond: Cats are often seen as conduits for spirits. A meow could be a loved one’s way of saying hello.

  2. An Invitation to Connect: If the cat feels familiar or its presence seems significant, it could be a call to delve deeper into your own spiritual practice.

  3. Bastet’s Guidance: If you’ve been drawn to Egyptian mythology or feel a connection to Bastet, hearing a cat meow might be a nudge to work with her energy.

Signs that Bastet may be reaching out to you:

  • You’re noticing more cats around you, or hearing their cries when none are present.
  • You feel a sudden urge to protect or nurture your home and loved ones.
  • You’ve been drawn to symbols of ancient Egypt, particularly cats or Bastet’s imagery.

If you feel called, light a candle (preferably green or gold, her sacred colors) and set up a small offering of items like cat figurines, milk, or honey. Speak to her from the heart and invite her energy into your life.

Ritual Tools

  • Statue of Bastet or a cat
  • A small willow twig or a lily flower
  • Several leaves of parchment paper
  • The Star tarot card
  • One stick of rose incense
  • One pink and one green candle

Ritual Time

Best performed under a full moon.

Instructions

After bathing, prepare your altar in a quiet spot in the garden, on the patio, or under a window where you can see the moonlight. Place your tarot card, statue, candles, and lily or willow twig on your altar. Light your candles and incense and meditate on the perfection and light of the Star card.

On the parchment paper, write all the characteristics you truly desire and need in a soul mate. Place the parchment under the statue.

Invoke the goddess Bastet to hear your petition by chanting the following:

“Bastet, goddess of love, celebration, and joy, empower me in my life.
Guide toward me a subtle yet nurturing partner. Help me see clearly
my pathway and needs to choose my rightful destiny.”

As you snuff out the candles, have faith in the goddess to bring your wish to manifestation. Remain calm and be positive in your thoughts and actions to bring about good fortune to your own life and all those who are dear to you.

I am the cat meowing at night :joy_cat:

More seriously, I haven’t heard any here, but where my girlfriend lives, there are so many cats! We love taking walks around the dusk, their prime hunting time. One time we met six different cats on a single walk! :smile_cat: Some of them meow at us, some come to sniff us, and a few let us pet them. We love them all :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Some of them we even recognize from their meows.

There have been a couple of times when I’ve heard a meow from outside there with the balcony door open, but seen no cat. If it was a message, I couldn’t interpret it. But at the time I was kind of energetically overwhelmed, so it was hard for me to be very open to it.

Lots of things to consider! I love how this not only explores the meaning of the cat meowing, but also has some “next step” suggestions for where to take it from there. Great guide - it’s pawsome! :smiley_cat: :paw_prints:
