Last night, as I was about to fall asleep, I heard it: a loud, sad meow breaking the silence. My first thought was, “Is this just a random cat, or is there something more to it?”
Cats have always felt magical to me. They seem to sense things we can’t, and their cries at night feel like they carry a deeper meaning. Was it just a coincidence, or was there a reason for it?

Hearing a Cat Meow at Night: What Does It Mean?
If you’ve ever wondered about the meaning of a cat meowing at night, you’re not alone. Let’s explore what it could mean: a spiritual message, a sign from Bastet, or something else entirely?
A Portal to the Spirit World
Many believe that cats are sensitive to energies and realms we cannot perceive. A cat’s cry in the night could be a sign they’ve noticed a shift in the spiritual veil. If you hear a disembodied meow, consider it a reminder to ground yourself and be open to any messages that might come through.
A Call to Intuition
Cats are symbolic of mystery and independence. When one meows at you—especially at night—it might be nudging you to trust your intuition or pay closer attention to something you’ve been ignoring.
Protection or Warning?
Hearing a cat cry could signify they’re alerting you to a spiritual presence, or even offering protection from unseen forces. If you feel uneasy after hearing a meow, cleansing your space with herbs like rosemary or sage can invite positivity.
Superstition and the Night Cry of Cats
Historically, cats crying at night has been linked to superstition:
Egyptian Roots: In ancient Egypt, cats were sacred to Bastet, the goddess of protection, fertility, and the home. A cat’s cry might be seen as a sign that Bastet is calling you to reconnect with her energy.

Witches’ Familiars: In European folklore, cats were often associated with witches. Black cats were even believed to be witches in disguise. A familiar/power animal’s cries were thought to be warnings of impending magical or supernatural events.
To interpret the spiritual meaning of the meow, ask yourself:
- Was the cat visible or unseen?
- How did it make you feel—calm, curious, or unsettled?

What Does It Mean When a Cat Meows at You?
If a cat meows directly at you, this is a direct communication! Spiritually, it could mean:
-
A Message from Beyond: Cats are often seen as conduits for spirits. A meow could be a loved one’s way of saying hello.
-
An Invitation to Connect: If the cat feels familiar or its presence seems significant, it could be a call to delve deeper into your own spiritual practice.
-
Bastet’s Guidance: If you’ve been drawn to Egyptian mythology or feel a connection to Bastet, hearing a cat meow might be a nudge to work with her energy.
Is Bastet Calling You?

Signs that Bastet may be reaching out to you:
- You’re noticing more cats around you, or hearing their cries when none are present.
- You feel a sudden urge to protect or nurture your home and loved ones.
- You’ve been drawn to symbols of ancient Egypt, particularly cats or Bastet’s imagery.
If you feel called, light a candle (preferably green or gold, her sacred colors) and set up a small offering of items like cat figurines, milk, or honey. Speak to her from the heart and invite her energy into your life.
