I was snooping around after @david12 first posted about his bee adventure and there’s a local chapter here that offers yearly beekeeper training but it was in January… I"ll have to
on the look for it next year1
There are lots of online courses. Plus if you are on Facebook look up Beekeeping Basics group.
Awww. Yeah, my local association is the same - they offer a “Bee School” but only in the winter
That being said, David is right! There are some great groups and communities out there as well as beekeepers on YouTube who share lessons/about their journey. I really liked watching Alex because he started from scratch - lots of important lessons along the way.
I did learn that it helps to find a school/group/resources from people beekeeping in a climate that is similar to yours. I found out from locals that beekeeping here in cold New England is vastly different than beekeeping far south or in Hawaii - different pests, different periods of dearth/harvest, different plants feeding the bees, etc.
Lots to learn and study, but beekeeping sure is exciting!
I found this in a newsletter from Rob Brezhny:
“A Serbian beekeeper shares his deep religious fervor with the insects he spends so much time with. Slobodan Jeftic builds beehives shaped like churches because he believes bees have souls, too.”
Have you considered decorating your hives with pagan symbols? Just curious.
That is a great idea. I’ve tossed around the idea of decorating the exterior. I’m currently taking care of the landscaping around it and I’ve had to instal a fencing system to keep the fur babies from getting too close to the hive and getting stung. Three more weeks and the bees arrive so the clock is ticking down.
I am excited for you! This will be fun. I hope everything works well and the bees find comfort in their new home.
Thank you for raising bees!
Your hive boxes look amazing.
