Birthday Tarot question

My daughter is turning 16 next week & obsessed with playing cards so I figured the perfect gift as her mom would be tarot cards. Any suggestions on the perfect deck?

Good morning @raven2 and welcome to the coven! I’m in Minnesota and have been practicing the craft for 35+ years.

I use tarot cards a lot. For a beginner with tarot cards, I would suggest any Ryder Waite cards as they are easiest to learn.

Hi, @raven2! I’m Amethyst! Welcome to the forum. :infinite_roots:

Well, other than sticking to a Rider-Waite deck to make it easier for her to learn, there’s a lot of possibilities. I mean, you can go traditional, to get one from Disney like Nightmare Before Christmas. Unicorns or mermaids. TV shows like Supernatural.

What I would do is look at Amazon, or maybe something like Hay House. Find a deck you like and the look for reviews or walk throughs on YouTube. That way you can see most if not all of the cards, and maybe even get an idea of if they’re shiny, or come with a good book or just a basic one, or if they shuffle well.

Plus there are also oracle cards, of just about any kind you can think of for different purposes. That will give you even more choices.

Most people go through a few tarot decks before they find the one that really fits with them. I know I did! So maybe get a basic one for her to learn from and then get her a special one at Yule if she’s still interested.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

Welcome to the forum, @raven2!

Wishing a very happy birthday to your daughter - it sounds like tarot cards would be a fun gift for her since she likes cards :flower_playing_cards:

I’m going to second (third?) Mystique and Amethyst about getting a Rider Waite tarot deck. Rider Waite is largely considered to be the ā€œdefaultā€ tarot deck. When you look up tarot card meanings, the vast majority are referring to Rider Waite cards, and even most stylized decks still resemble RW to some extent. It’s a solid first deck and introduction to tarot :+1:

That being said, there’s a tarot deck for just about everything these days! If there’s a game, TV show, movie, book, or series that your daughter really enjoys, you could run a search for a tarot deck with that theme. From Supernatural tarot to Nightmare Before Christmas tarot to Dragon Age tarot and a million more, it could be fun to get your daughter a deck that resembles something else she loves.

Whatever you decide, I hope she enjoys it! Blessed be

I’m going to second her interests, especially as a teenager. Too much in life is forced upon kids just learning their wings. If we can build their interests in some way, we can alleviate some of the pressure to conform, confirm their existence and individual importance, let them know we hear them and we care. I’m dealing with my driver’s 14 year old grandson. He’s a handful, but he can be a treasure, too.

The tricky part about it is keeping up with the changes the teen is going through. Their interests can change on a dime. Some of that is the media and what kids are exposed to among peers. We can’t control it, and it affects our lives and choices. One minute, they express fascination, and a week later, they look at you with disgust that you’re so outdated! I honor you for trying!

Perhaps a Lenormand deck based on ordinary playing cards? It may open an interest beyond what she is already familiar with, yet still in the same ball park.

That said, best of luck in choosing a deck! And welcome to the forum!

Hi! I’m Dan

For a beginner deck, you might want to try one with prompts on it that explain the intent of the card. They are often called ā€˜Beginner’ decks but more experienced people use them. Here is one for $17.90 US (Amazon). It is Rider/Waite/Smith which is good to start with - I have several decks but the RWS decks seem to call me most.

Note: if you are not in the US (or even if you are) Temu has a similar deck - a bit cheaper but it takes a while to get to the US.

@raven2 you have a lot of options here to choose from! Everyone has provided a lot of great ideas!

For a beginner, I’m thinking along the lines of what Dan said, cards that have the meanings on them because it is still a classic rider/waite deck. I think that would be perfect!

I would be ecstatic if my mom bought me those! I just want to say that you are a really thoughtful and loving mom (I’m a Spiritual Healer, I read energy)! This is truly a wonderful gift and to ask others opinions before you purchase is just even more thoughtful! You are a great mom! Just want to throw that out there!

Keep us updated and let us know what deck you end up buying! Also, let us know how your daughter likes the deck!

Blessed Be!
