Coinomancy

Somewhat flippantly (pun) I was chasing an explainer for a card draw and thought I would just flip a coin. That led to thinking about one of the hundreds (if not thousands) of divination methods called Coinomancy.

The thing is, it is not well documented (except the obvious coin flip which is common with everyone). So I asked an AI to outline something. Here it is:

========================================

Three-Coin Casting Spread: The Path of Fortune

Step 1: Choose Your Coins

  • Use three distinct coins (e.g., penny, nickel, quarter) to give each denomination symbolic weight.
  • Alternatively, use three identical coins and let heads/tails carry the meaning.

Step 2: Cast the Coins

  • Toss all three onto a cloth or surface.
  • Note heads/tails and relative positions (left, center, right).

Step 3: Interpret the Positions

Step 4: Layer Denomination Symbolism (optional)

  • Penny (Copper): Humble beginnings, grounding, everyday matters.
  • Nickel (Silver tone): Exchange, negotiation, balance.
  • Quarter (Large, marked): Destiny, turning points, significant events.

:milky_way: Example Reading

Question: What mystery is unfolding in silence?

  • Left (Penny, Heads): Past clarity, a truth already glimpsed.
  • Center (Nickel, Tails): Present blockage, negotiation stalled.
  • Right (Quarter, Heads): Future opportunity, a turning point revealed.

Interpretation: Silence holds a hidden negotiation (Nickel/Tails) that will soon flip into a destined opportunity (Quarter/Heads).

:candle: Ritual Overlay

  • Cast coins onto a circle drawn in chalk or ink.
  • Heads = light, Tails = shadow.
  • Read the spread as a dance of light and shadow across time.

I’m seriously thinking about making a program to do it digitally just to practice a bit.

Well, that was easy. Pictures of coins are all over the web. I decided to do a four coin version. Now I have to figure out what it means.

update: I did the checklist and reading. I had to update the checklist to allow for four coins. Click on the summary below if interested.

Summary

This is the raw data but it is readable and shows how it was compiled.
Slot Meanings (Pathway)

  • Slot 1 — The Threshold (Past Influence)
What foundation or ancestral echo shapes the path? Nickel (Base metal)Practicality, labor, resilience, the body’s endurance. Nickel → effort required. TailsHidden, unconscious, shadow fortune.
  • Slot 2 — The Present Crossroads
What energy defines the current moment? Quarter (Composite, larger value)Expansion, crossroads, fate, communal destiny. Quarter → culmination. Tails → Hidden, unconscious, shadow fortune.
  • Slot 3 — The Trial (Challenge/Obstacle)
What must be faced or integrated? Dime (Silver)Clarity, intellect, refinement, subtle influence. Dime → refinement. HeadsVisible, conscious, outward fortune.
  • Slot 4 — The Horizon (Future/Destiny)
What fortune lies ahead, if the path is followed? Penny (Copper)Origin, roots, humble beginnings, ancestral voice. Penny → small beginnings. TailsHidden, unconscious, shadow fortune.

This is really exciting! The only form of coinomancy I’ve tried is the basic coin flip, and it looks like I’ve been missing out! Seeing your exploration here is very inspiring. I bet one could tie a coin reading into tarot to get some extra details and clarification… hmm… lots to explore! :star_struck:

Thank you for sharing, Dan! Happy flipping :coin:

This got out of hand quickly. I was up until the wee hours noodling on it. The AI’s instructions have a couple of points of improvement… Since there doesn’t seem to be any recognized system out there, I went a little nuts.

OCD for the win! I’ll mature it a little (use it, fix it, fix the fixes, etc) and p0st an update.

But this might be a case where people can roll their own system - admittedly, part of the attraction of Tarot/Lenormand/Runes/Ogham etc is studying it with others but having something that uniquely one’s own may have an attraction.

The more I work on this the more I see it as a private system. Today, I used one of the Lenormand questions as a test case for the flippy thingy.

The question was: How can I welcome wonder into my spirit?

The coin draw was:

The answer was:

Summary: I can work wonder into my Spirit by: quietly emphasizing my own internal stability and using subtle beginnings by watching for overlooked forces that can be advantageous/pleasing. Aiding me will be a strong solar will and ritual authority. This action is mostly internal and hidden – depending on intuition - but will start with quiet but overt decisions to change.

The following Guide starts with an AI request but the result quickly changed as I was using it. It is long so I hid the details but if you are interested…

Summary

(AI request) I need an outline for a coinomancy spread. The type of question is spiritual. The coin spread is in four slots. The coins are drawn for each slot and the possible values are penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar. The coins do not have to be unique for the square - they can repeat. For instance, in an unusual draw, there could be four pennies - all tails. Coin value, metal content (can be notional) and position in the slots are important

NOTE: The underlying assumption is that each draw will be from a group of 6 coins. To implement it, either the draw must be made, noted, and then replaced or the user must start with enough coins to allow for duplicates in all the positions. If one is doing this manually, then starting with 4 possible values instead of six would be fine. Specifically, Penny, Nickel, Dime and Quarter - this could be assembled for about two US dollars.

Guide Book for Coinomancy Spiritual Spreads (4 Coins)

I. Overview

This spread uses four coins drawn one at a time to map the spiritual architecture of a question. Each coin contributes meaning through:

  • Value — magnitude, intensity, or scale of the force
  • Metal Content (notional) — elemental or symbolic tone
  • Orientation (heads/tails) — conscious vs. unconscious influence
  • Position — the domain of the reading

Coins may repeat; repetition strengthens the archetype rather than diminishing variety.

II. Coin Attributes

1. Coin Value — Magnitude of Influence

  • Penny — subtle beginnings, emotional whispers, overlooked forces
  • Nickel — grounding, endurance, stability
  • Dime — precision, fine detail, small hinge that moves a large door
  • Quarter — crossroads, exchange, choice
  • Half Dollar — duality, thresholds, ancestral echoes
  • Dollar — major spiritual weight, destiny, illumination

2. Metal Content — Elemental Signature (Notional)

Assigning metals to elements gives each coin a mythic “voice.

Penny — Copper - subtle beginnings, emotional whispers, overlooked forces, love, flow, conduction. groundedness, practical magic, life force, moving energy

Nickel — Nickel - grounding, endurance, stability, magnetism, integrity, hidden resilience, shadow feel (aspects can be forged in darkens), blend of fire+earth

Dime — Silver - precision, fine detail, small hinge that moves a large door, protection, liminality, hidden knowledge, Feminine, adaptive power, cool, clarifying, gentle, restorativea

Quarter — Copper/Nickel - crossroads, exchange, choice

Half Dollar — Silver/Copper - duality, thresholds, ancestral echoes

Dollar — Brass/Manganese - major spiritual weight, destiny, illumination, Solar Will, ritual authority, voice, clarity and protective resonance, deep stabilization, shadow alchemy

3. Orientation — Visibility of the Influence

  • Heads — conscious, chosen, visible
  • Tails — hidden, unconscious, inherited

III. Spread Structure

The spread consists of four slots, each representing a spiritual domain.

Slot One — The Root of the Inquiry

Domain: Origin, cause, the underlying spiritual motive.

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → scale of the initiating force
  • Metal → elemental source of the root
  • Orientation → conscious vs. hidden origin

Purpose: Reveals the “why beneath the why.”

Slot Two — The Present Field

Domain: Current energies, active influences, what is “in play.”

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → strength of present forces
  • Metal → tone of the moment
  • Orientation → acknowledged vs. unseen influences

Purpose: Describes the energetic weather around the seeker.

Slot Three — The Hidden Pathway

Domain: The challenge, lesson, or unseen corridor.

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → significance of the lesson
  • Metal → the elemental tool or ally
  • Orientation → explicit vs. disguised teaching

Purpose: Reveals the initiation or integration required.

Slot Four — The Outcome / Integration

Domain: Resolution, synthesis, direction of spiritual flow.

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → magnitude of the outcome
  • Metal → alchemical quality of transformation
  • Orientation → outward manifestation vs. inward shift

Purpose: Describes the trajectory that unfolds if the path is followed.

IV. Repetition Rules

Coins may repeat; repetition intensifies meaning.

Four of a Kind

A single archetype dominates all domains.
Metal becomes the primary teacher; value defines the scale of the entire reading.

Three of a Kind

A chorus with one dissenting voice.
The unique coin becomes the pivot or key.

Two Pairs

Duality and mirroring.
Two forces seek balance or reconciliation.

One Pair

Echoes, resonance, or a theme returning for emphasis.

V. Reading Procedure

  1. Prepare the space with intention.
  2. Mix the coins without looking.
  3. Draw four coins, placing them in order from Slot One to Slot Four.
  4. Interpret each coin through value, metal, and orientation.
  5. Trace the movement from Root → Present → Pathway → Outcome.
  6. Apply repetition rules.
  7. Record the reading for reflection.

Example

Question or mood: How can I welcome wonder into my spirit?”

Slot One — The Root of the Inquiry

Domain: Looking for a way to allow wonder into my spirit so I can actively pursue it rather than wait for it

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → Dime - precision, fine detail, small hinge that moves a large door. This is not a big reveal. It is a smaller but significant one.
  • Metal → Silver. This is telling me that receptivity, reflection and intuition is in play
  • Orientation → Tails – hidden, unconscious, spiritual

Purpose: Reveals the “why beneath the why.”

Slot Two — The Present Field

Domain: Current energies, active influences, what is “in play.” My subconscious is in need of answers

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → Nickel
  • Metal →Nickel - grounding, endurance, stability, magnetism, integrity, hidden resilience, shadow feel (aspects can be forged in darkens), blend of fire+earth
  • Orientation → tails. Once again, this is intuitive and hidden

Purpose: Describes the energetic weather around the seeker. The overall feeling is one of internal stability

Slot Three — The Hidden Pathway

Domain: The challenge, lesson, or unseen corridor. What should I do and how should I do it?

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → Penny – slight impact
  • Metal → Copper - s ubtle beginnings, emotional whispers, overlooked forces, love, flow, conduction. groundedness, practical magic, life force, moving energy
  • Orientation → Heads – explicit guide/teaching

Purpose: Reveals the initiation or integration required. I must act on this openly.

Slot Four — The Outcome / Integration

Domain: Resolution, synthesis, direction of spiritual flow.

Interpretation Focus:

  • Value → Dollar – maximum impact
  • Metal →Brass/Manganese - major spiritual weight, destiny, illumination, solar will, ritual authority, voice, clarity and protective resonance, deep stabilization, shadow alchemy
  • Orientation → Tails. Hidden and intuitive

Purpose: Describes the trajectory that unfolds if the path is followed. (Stated in the summary below)

This is a treasure trove (both figuratively and literally, because coins! :coin:  ) of possibilities. I really like the idea of using the correspondences of the metal of each coin to help guide the reading. It’s really awesome and inspiring to see!

Beautiful work on this, Dan - thank you for sharing!

Thanks Bry!

Like any new project it is going through phases of discovery of cool things and the overload of information that may be distracting. I was using it last night and realized it was somewhat awkward. I need to do a bit (a bunch) of editing to make it focused and more uniform.

It sounds like you’ve got yourself a fun project, Dan! It also sounds like a lot of research and experimentation, but I think that’s part of what makes it fun  The end result will be crafted from a labor of love.

Good luck with the editing and I hope you continue to have fun as you create your method of Coinomancy (which as its creator, you will then be able to name. “Danomancy”, perhaps? :face_with_hand_over_mouth:) Enjoy! :coin: :sparkles:
