As I was reading my latest book club entry, I found some interesting information. Apparently, Gerald Gardner was part of a coven to keep the Nazis out of Great Briton. I found an article on it and thought I’d share!
I found a good article on it at military.com. Very interesting. It compliments the article you linked. I like my link because it gives stronger credit to Gardner (and from a military mag no less).
For what it is worth - and maybe not relevant - there was a group of WW2 night flyers who were all Russian female and were a bit crazy… and successful. They were called ‘The Night Witches’ in both Russian and German. Night Witches
Both those articles are awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! The Witches of England and the Night Witches don’t get enough exposure. Both would make an interesting movie, especially the Night Witches!
Yep. Generally, we only see war movies from a biased view. The Night Witches deserve recognition. One woman had over 1000 wartime bombing sorties… an almost unbelievable figure - the original cap on US bomber crews in that theater was 25 and later bumped to 50.
I had heard vaguely about this but didn’t look too much into it. I decided it was time to change that and I went looking at Gerald Gardner’s book “Witchcraft Today” where he had written about it. I can’t see the entire book right now because someone else is using it, but I did find this passage!
The accusations he’s writing about in the first sentence is a quote from the previous paragraph and I can’t see all of it. The rest of this paragraph talks a bit about stopping Hitler.
I presume he thinks he knows what he is talking about, so let me reassure him that to the best of my knowledge most of these accusations are false. Witches did cast spells, to stop Hitler landing after France fell. They met, raised the great cone of power and directed the thought at Hitler’s brain: “You cannot cross the sea,” “You cannot cross the sea,” “Not able to come,” “Not able to come.” Just as their great-grandfathers had done to Boney and their remoter forefathers had done to the Spanish Armada with the words: “Go on,” “Go on,” “Not able to land,” “Not able to land.” Is that allying themselves with the King’s enemies? I am not saying they stopped Hitler. All I say is that I saw a very interesting ceremony performed with the intention of putting a certain idea into his mind, and this was repeated several times afterwards; and though all the invasion barges were ready, the fact was that Hitler never even tried to come. The witches told me that their great-grandfathers had tried to project the same idea into Boney’s mind.
In other interpretations of what Gardner was part of, the group also sent confusion to Hitler’s mind. Just after that, Hitler attacked the Soviet Union (operation Barbarossa) and the US at the same time. Something that most agree was a really big mistake.
See, that would make an awesome movie! Instead they give us Transformers 24 or something. Sheesh.
I’ve got this book on my wish list! Thank you for sharing! It’s just such an interesting idea that Witches protected England like that. Better than Bedknobs and Broomsticks!
