I read Jason Mankey’s blog. He’s one of my favorite authors, hands down. He writes wonderful pagan books, and while some are expensive, they are worth every penny!
But he shared a wonderful blog today, about Starting Autumn. It’s lovely and making me want to drag out all of my Halloween stuff early!
I love this post I feel the same way he does about the changing seasons, and it gets even weirder when you factor in different climates!
My only gripe about seeing things in stores “too early” is the commercialization of things, as well as stores skipping over holidays or seasonal celebrations but that’s my own personal issue. I can’t complain too much because, of course, I love that Halloween decorations are out already!
What a great read! I found Jason’s exploration of when do the seasons actually start/stop to be really interesting.
(from the blog post):
But astronomical alignments only mean something because we assign meaning to them. The universe didn’t attach the words “Summer” and “Winter” onto the solstices, we did that as human beings. And certainly not every ancient culture (who would have been well aware of equinoxes and solstices) celebrated those mile-markers as the start and end of certain seasons.
He makes a good point - “fall” begins at different times for different people. And the more I think about it, it’s not just a secondary switch. The season meld into each other with no strict lines between them. Aspects of autumn begin around Lammas and blend with summer until around the equinox - maybe even later.
It makes me really appreciate living in a place with four seasons. Watching them slowly come and go brings a lot of joy!
I’d love to decorate for Halloween, too, or even Fall, but I don’t have any decorations I’ll gather them over time, but I haven’t had a chance to get any yet.
