Is knitting, crocheting, or doing any kind of craft considered a form of meditation?
It absolutely can be! I don’t think it is by itself, but when it is approached with that mindset then it is considered a meditative practice.
I know that when I sit down to crochet I have two modes – mindless crochet while doing something else (such as watching TV or listening to an audiobook) or mindful crochet (paying attention to the stitches, letting my hands flow while my mind wanders, focusing on my breathing, etc.)
I agree with @MeganB . Whenever I crochet, which is sadly rare, I’m so focused on the stitches and flow that I find myself grounded in spite of myself.
After my mother’s accident in 1976, she spent a lot of her time crocheting. Part of it was to keep her hands moving while she was bored and unable to get out of the house. We ended up with a lot of beautiful blankets to keep us warm and to give as gifts.
She never said much, but I believe she was deep in meditation when I’d ask her about homework. Her answers were muffled like out of a dream.
Best of all, she wasn’t hurting me while she had yarn in her hands. I’d say it was very healing for us both.
Definitely anything with the hands that slows your heart rate or just makes you feel good. Alot of times making spell jars is a great mediation for me
