Hello, I have a question. So I went to a shop today where I live. And I found this stone. It turns out, it’s a desert rose. I was drawn to it. It 's beautiful, you guys but I don’t know that the significance of it
It’s a type of selenite, which I did NOT know! It promotes calmness and stability and is good for new beginnings.
Here’s where I found the info: Desert Rose Crystal: Meaning, Properties, and Uses
Thanks for asking! I learned something new!
Thank you very much
Thanks for asking @secilia
Now I know that I´ll want one of them for my grounding crystal grids. Yay! Off to the crystal shop I go…![]()
You’re welcome! ![]()
@secilia I know you already got your answer from the wonderful @Amethyst, but if I might be so bold as to add, I wanted to share an in-depth post on Selenite/Satin Spar that you might find interesting.
Here are a few links specifically about the Desert Rose. Link 1 and Link 2 and Link 3
To break it down:
- Gypsum is the overall mineral species.
- Selenite is the crystalline variety of gypsum.
- Desert Rose is the name for these crystals when they grow in arid, sandy conditions, trapping sand grains to form “petals”.
Enjoy your lovely new crystal addtion!

Thank you Artemisia for those links. Very informative. I realize now I have several Desert Rose specimens that I have had since I was a child, given to me by my Grandfather. I always thought they were something from the sea, as they were with his sea shell collection, most of which he gathered when he was in the Italian Navy in the early 1900’s in the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. Now I can see that they are Barite Roses.
I love desert rose! I have some on my desk upstairs! It’s absolutely amazing to me what wonders we find in this world! Happy to know some more about it!
Hi Secilia, I use an app called The Citrine Circle - A Guide to Crystals. The app lists A-Z of Crystals and provides information ie, a general overview, geography locations of where each crystal are found, hardness, colours etc. healing metaphysical properties. I use it if I come across a new crystal. It is on iOS App Store and Google Play Store.
I hope this help
Blessed be
I love rocks and geology (got 102% for my college geology class[extra credit, put me over the 100%]), and I’m from the desert, but had to look this one up.
Yep, I’ve seen those here in the desert of Vegas, didn’t know they had a name.

Hi Victoria
Happy to help
Blessings to you ![]()
Desert Roses are available in the White Sands area south of where I live. This is the same area where the government tested nuclear bombs, so access to the area is limited. However, brochures show people using sleds to ride down sand dunes as though they were snow. The sand is not silicate, there, but gypsum.
BTW Guys, Found another useful “Crystals” site: All Crystals - The Crystal Council . Informative, useful when you just need to quickly look up something about a particular crystal.
Merry Meet Henry
Thank you for your post I have added the APP to my iPhone in addition to my other APP The Citrine Circle. It will be very useful to me as I love my crystal magic and I am always drawn to purchasing Spheres and place them in 3’s I have always done that
Blessings to you ![]()
