Did you ever ponder education

Did you ever ponder your education?
Well, did you?

I went to 4 schools, in 2 towns, within a 5 mile distance. Neither town had a population over 500 people…unless you counted cows, then it went way up.

Great Valley grade school.
My first bus ride…needed help getting on the bus, short legs.
That made me mad…I wasn’t a baby anymore.

Kindergarden - My new best friend got in trouble because she wouldn’t eat the bread crusts. Her mon cut her crust off after that. So there, teacher person who was 8 feet tall. Actually she was six feet tall but at a little over 3 feet, to me, she was a giant.

First grade - Most clear memory, a little boy was “naughty” and got spanked everyday…I mean, pulled his pants down and spanked his bare bum! Now, the poor kid would be called ADHD (1.) and treated for a learning dysfunction. Learned to print letters. You can’t beat ADHD out of a kid.

Second grade - uneventful, I only remember she was a big old Heffer. Improved printing.

Third grade - Ah, Mrs Norris. So nice, kind.

Fourth grade: She taught us well, but if you got sick (…chicken pox) she sat you out in the hall and called your mom. That was a good way to spread it around, to other kids, wasn’t it. Learned to use cursive for alphabet. (& math, 2+2=9), just kidding, it was 8.

Transfered to the Murphy House (A repurposed farm house that held 5-6th grade. Little house on the prairies, much? ) when my brothers went to high school, my parents had me transferred closer to home . (Like 500 yards.)

Fifth grade - Miss Kelly! She wore makeup and leopard heels with matching pocketbook. Had glasses attached to a pearl necklace so she didn’t misplace them. Perfume and RED LIPSTICK. I wanted some!
But Mom said: NO! taboo, forbidden, Juju, Bwana (Old tarzan movie reference). Red lipstick is for Mass and weddings.

Sixth grade - Loved my teacher. Writing in Cursive. All in all, school was still fun.

Blessings💕

I loathed school until like 11th Grade. I could read well, but I’m awful at math. I can’t remember all the counties of West Virginia for the life of me. What I know of the government comes from shows like The West Wing.

Add in I was bullied from like, 2nd grade till High School? Yeah, it was not a fun learning experience.

I try to forget my schooling because I hated school! I was bullied really badly! The girls tried to hit me with a car 12 days left of my senior year. College was better though.

I’m so sorry @Amethyst and @Selena-Paloma. Kids can be awful. Sounds like many of us have some not-so-good memories from early school days :people_hugging:  I agree that university was better!

Miss Kelly sounds like a real highlight - what a fashion statement! She sounds like she was the kind of teacher who could make class more fun

Ahh, Miss Kelly
Fathers loved her, mothers…not so much.

Yeah, I was heavy, had read hair, a different accent, knew too many words, and had psoriasis, which is way worse than acne. Add in the glasses about Fourth Grade, and I’m lucky I didn’t get dunked in the toilet once a month or something.

Re: Pondering school days
I made a comment the other day using a line from a Johnny Weismuller movie, one of the Tarzan Movies of the 1940’s. 'Tarzan finds a mate", I think
It was"Juju Bwana." said by a native warning the arrogant white hunter about going
into hostile territory.
Didn’t you guys watch Tarzan movies?
Every sunday we sat in front of our…B&W TV and watched the B&W movies.
We cheered him on.
That was the era of black (bad guy), and White (good guy). Good always won over evil.

Sometimes you make me feel very old. :woman_with_white_cane: :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Come on Mr Moses, when you’re done parting the Red Sea, we’ll watch “Tarzan finds a son”. Tarzan jumps off the Brooklyn Bridge and LIVES.
That was drama.
Sigh, Bless ya’ll

I’m sorry to hear it! I must have been in a weird class or strange area, because most of the kids my age in elementary school ended up with glasses and braces. Then, because I had to get them, my sister wanted them, too! It turned something rather unfortunate into almost a fashion statement  Still, kids will be kids - if it’s not one thing, they’ll tease or bully about something else.

I wouldn’t go back to high school if I could turn back time, that’s for sure. There are a lot of icky things about being an adult, but we are blessed with more choices and more communities. I’m glad to have spaces like here in the forum where folks of all types and beliefs can come together and hang out respectfully  :hugs:

The only Tarzan movie I’m familiar with is the Disney adaptation! It sounds like the old B&W versions had a lot of wild stuff going on.

I actually can’t remember the last time I watched a B&W film! I’m not even sure where I could go to watch one these days. We don’t have many theaters and they’re all color. The VHS player and DVD player are gone - I guess it’s streaming or nothing around here, these days :television:

Yeah, I was talking to my driver yesterday on the way to the doctor. And we were saying that anyone strange gets bullied. If you stuck a jock in the middle of a bunch of geeks, he’ll get bullied.

I loved school. I have so many great memories of both Primary and Secondary school. I have a thirst for knowledge and learning so i was in my element at school. I’ve never really “left school” because tomorrow I start my 18th year as a Primary School teacher, hoping to share that passion for learning with the next group of youngsters that are sat in front of me.

I pondered education my whole life. Grade school was amazing. High School was horrible. I swore I would never go to class again.

Three years later, I was bored and started a few classes in languages since I was in a foreign country. I quit for a couple years and then was in a position where I worked alone on a 12am to 8 am schedule. I was bored again. I finished a BA in two years and swore I would never go to class again.

My BA opened a door and I was encouraged to go on. I finished an MS in a military higher ed group. I swore I would never set foot in a class again.

I was hired as adjunct for remote teaching. I retired from my job and, having been successful enough to cruise a while, swore I would never take another position.

A visiting Dean of a University saw me in class and quietly offered me a great position in my then obsession (Computer Science).

It goes on but education and I have always been in a mutually antagonizing yet productive relationship. As much as I hated it, I’ve always been quite good at it.

That does tend to happen a lot, unfortunately. Perhaps it’s some kind of survival trait from way back when humans had to live in small groups in the wild? Not excusing it, of course, just pondering why.

Well, whatever causes the urge to bully in some people, I think that mindfulness and empathy are stronger  :flexed_biceps:

That’s wonderful - you’ve really embraced your passion! Your students are so blessed to have you as their teacher :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It sounds like, even if you don’t like education, it sure loves you, Dan! :joy: :+1: Luckily, learning and teaching are both wonderful things to be skilled at  :books: :sparkles:

I believe it is. Though sadly, some parents aren’t teaching that.

If bullying is a survival instinct that emerges in some people, then hopefully empathy is something inside all of us, too. May it emerge when needed, whether or not it’s taught

One of the problems with education is the 'Bored Child” AKA ‘they don’t apply themselves’
I for one should have been moved up a grade because they didn’t challenge me.

PS. I didn’t go into the nightmare years . (AKA High school) because it was the time of transformation.
Your voices were changing, your hormones were out of control and your body parts were changing sizes. I didn’t sigh up for that. I think if they took all 11 year old kids and put them stasis for 7-10
they would be spared the 'Tween” years. And “Jeez mom, you’re a fossil” and then…

  1. what do you mean, you won't pay for college.

  2. Get a scholarship, a job Mister Or student loans like your Dad and I did

  3. I'm going to smack you

  4. You hit me and I'll call the Cops

  5. Try to make it to the phone...or better yet, call, Maybe they'll send Rob
(my nephew) And he'll give you a brat atude adjustment

  6. No, no, Mom. That's OK.

  7. Believe it or not we did survive puberty.

Do you remember your mom saying " I hope you have kids just like you."

`And he Was!`

Blessings'
