Does Earth Have a Second Moon? 🌙

I’ve had a couple of PMs about this so thought it best just to post here…

Have you heard about Earth’s “second Moon” that has been discovered in the last few days? Do we now have a second satellite orbiting the planet? What does this mean for astrology? I thought I would just put this together to give my two cents (or pence  :united_kingdom:) on this.

It is true that a new object has been discovered seemingly circling the planet in the same way as the Moon does. It has the inspiring name 2025 PN7 :roll_eyes:and was first spotted in August this year. It is believed to have been tagging along with us for the past 60 years and will stay with us for roughly another 60 years.

So do we have a second Moon? Are we going to have New and Full Moons from different objects in the sky? Short answer…No! 2025PN7 is a “Quasi Moon”. These are objects, in the case of 2025 an asteroid, that appear to orbit the Earth but aren’t actually. It circles the Sun like we do. In fact, it’s path is so closely aligned with ours that it appears to orbit or circle us. In reality though, it’s not. Think of it like this:

Imagine you’re jogging around a circular track. Someone else is jogging in a lane right beside you at nearly the exact same speed. Sometimes the other person moves slightly ahead, sometimes they end up a bit behind and sometimes they are back by your side again. To someone watching from the middle of the track, it would look like they were orbiting you in a slow loop.

This very definition means it is not a Moon, as a moon is captured by a planets gravity in a loop around it. Therefore, we are not going to be seeing any additional New and Full Moons each month from this celestial object. It’s too small any way. It’s only 20m (62ft) wide. Also, consider the Moon’s influence on Earth and it’s inhabitants: it affects tides, seasons and even our biological rhythms e.g mood and sleep patterns. Quasi Moons are far too small to exert any influence like this on the planet.

What about astrology? Will it have an influence on Earthly matters? Again, the short answer is no. Astrology is based on how celestial bodies appear from Earth. From our perspective, there’s only one Moon that we see and that affects Earth. The Monns’s waxing and waning is the basis of lunar astrology and magic. The quasi moon doesn’t create these visible waxing or waning and therefore, has no symbolic meaning in astrology.

Astrology does have scope for adding other objects to its symbolic framework. When Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered, they were later added to astrology because they had observable effects on our collective experience. Astrologers noticed synchronicities, patterns, and themes emerging after their discoveries. Quasi-moons haven’t done that and have no mythical links. Other asteroids were added. Take Ceres as an example. It is 1000km wide while 2025PN7 is just 20m wide, making it pretty insignificant in the grand scheme.

On a more personal level, you could interpret it symbolically. It could be seen as a sign of a fleeting visit from someone, perhaps something leaving your life or situation as quickly as it entered, or even a warning of mimicry or illusion (it is posing as a moon after all ).

However, although 2025PN7 is with us for another 60 odd years, it won’t be appearing in horoscopes or on birth charts any times soon!

Sounds like Earth has a little friend in the great journey through the cosmos, albeit a temporary travel buddy!

This was fascinating to read. Thank you for exploring what a quasi moon is and its effects (or rather, lack of effects) for astrology readings. I’m with you about the name - I wish they’d give it something more fun than a handful of numbers and letters! :comet:

Thank you for the insights! :star2:
