Exploring the Many Paths of Divination: Which Speaks to Your Soul?

Divination is the art of tapping into unseen energies, intuition, and cosmic guidance to gain insight into our lives. For centuries, witches, mystics, and seekers have turned to different divination methods, each offering a unique doorway into the wisdom of the universe. Whether you’re curious, cautious, or deeply devoted, there’s a form of divination that can illuminate your path.

  1. Tarot and Oracle Cards

Perhaps the most well-known, tarot and oracle cards are a powerful tool for introspection and guidance. Each deck tells a story, reflecting the energies surrounding your life, your challenges, and your potential outcomes. Tarot tends to follow structured archetypes, while oracle decks are more free-form and intuitive.

  1. Runes

Rooted in Norse tradition, runes are symbols etched into stones or wood that carry deep meanings. Casting runes allows you to receive messages from the energies around you, offering guidance, warnings, or encouragement. Runes are perfect for those drawn to ancient wisdom and simple, tactile tools.

  1. Scrying

Scrying is the art of gazing into reflective surfaces—mirrors, crystal balls, water, or even flames—to access visions and messages. This practice requires focus, patience, and openness to subtle impressions, making it ideal for intuitive explorers. You can even use your phone in a pinch! See that reflective surface? Yup it will work.

  1. Pendulums

A pendulum, often a crystal on a chain, acts as a bridge between your subconscious and higher guidance. It’s particularly useful for yes/no questions, decision-making, and confirming energetic information. The pendulum’s movements become a language of insight unique to you. You do have to program it to you tho before use. Ask a yes/no question that you know the answer would be YES…whichever way it swings, that’s your yes! Same with the no. You only have to program it once to you.

  1. Astrology

Astrology maps the energies of the planets and stars to our lives. Your birth chart is like a cosmic blueprint, offering guidance on your strengths, challenges, and timing for important events. Astrology is both practical and mystical, showing how universal energies shape our personal journey.

  1. Tea Leaf Reading (Tasseography)

A whimsical and magickal practice, tea leaf reading interprets the patterns left behind by tea leaves at the bottom of your cup. Each shape, swirl, and cluster holds symbolic meaning, creating a story that reflects your current energies and possibilities.

  1. Automatic Writing (free writing)

Automatic writing is a channeling practice where you allow words, symbols, or images to flow from your hand without conscious direction. It’s a direct line to your higher self, spirit guides, or the universe, often revealing deep insights or messages you weren’t aware of. I use this one a lot. I try to hit a trance-like state before I begin writing. I have pen and paper ready. Sometimes it feels odd because my hand is moving but I feel detached from it…if that makes sense.

Divination is not about predicting the future with certainty—it’s about guidance, reflection, and connection. It’s a personal journey, and every practitioner finds different methods resonate at different times.

Also I’ll leave you with a little advice. If you do readings for the public. Be prepared that not everyone will receive your messages well. Sometimes the messages that come through are not what they were anticipating…so they can become mad or upset. Just stay calm and remind them you are only the messenger.

:sparkles: Which form of divination calls to you most?

Fantastic Friday Fellow Fortune Tellers,

Since my accident (coma/TBI), I do not have the retention to study astrology any more (I had made my own birth chart a couple times through the years, however, that knowledge has gone). I have been struggling with the Tarot, but have been diligent with it! I find Lenormand much easier with the simple pictures. I like pendulums and scrying. (I scry with mirrors, water, smoke, and flame, I’m trying to read clouds)

Tarot is difficult because of all the different aspects to each card; that is why I find Lenormand easier.

I just started with my Witches runes (easier to remember for me, than the Futhark runes)

However, having my mind not be as able to remember so much, actually makes divination easier.:divination_crystal_ball: :upside_down_face: My mind is more open to ideas/forms that I see.

I have a few pendulums that I use occasionally, I carry one with me in my purse, and change it out once in a while with one of the other ones.

Don’t use loose leaf tea…so, that’s out.

Well, thanks for the thought.

So, What I use the most is my Tarot and Lenormand cards. What I feel most comfortable with is smoke or fire scrying.

Fabulous, thankyou for this article. For me it’s runes, temperamental, heavy, chaotic beasties, that once they know who you are decide what path you should do in your magical practice, open portals to spirits you may or may not wish to meet and generally run rough shod over your life  Wouldn’t want it any other way.:partying_face::laughing:

I love my tarot cards, although I admit to needing the guide book at times. I’ve had various decks for many years and use the Witch’s Tarot, this deck speaks to me best. I also have the Merlin Tarot, but that is quite a complex deck and I’ve not used it for some time. I also love the simplicity of a pendulum.

I’m learning astrology at the moment, so am sure I will use this too. I’ve decided to learn it via a college. It’s going to take about three years to complete the diploma, but I’m loving it so far.

I love my pendulums - I have 2 - one that was a gift from my father in law BEFORE I knew I was a witch (he bought it at a tai chi convention… so random!) and one that I bought because it was pretty. They are my go tos usually.

I have a gorgeous set of tarot cards and I use them, but I’m not confident enough in what they mean to interpret them without the booklet.

I also have a set or oracle cards that I love - they have the meanings on the card so they are easier to use.

I really want to learn to do automatic writing - but I just can’t seem to turn my brain off enough. I’ll just have to keep practicing! I did start journal writing daily at the beginning of March, so maybe I’ll get there!

Sensational Saturday Ailey,

I have a few tarot decks, but I am still in the learning phase. The one I use the most is a beginner tarot, that has the explanations on the cards. Some are more elaborate, for yes, no on the cards, reversals on the cards…different stuff. However, the one I bought, is the RWS regular deck. So I do not have to become confused with the artwork.

Also, about once a month, I go through one of my tarot guidebooks and review my “cheat sheet” for the cards that I keep in my tarot journal. I have found through the months, there are things I am able to not have to write down anymore (like the Major Arcana)

I find Lenormand/Oracle Cards/Runes much easier because they are simple symbols that speak directly to you. You do not need a guide (maybe for the runes, so you know what they represent, I use Witches Runes they have 13 symbols and are very easy like oracle cards, no memorization)

Well, I’m starting to yap again….better go.

The only things on your list that I have tried have been tarot/oracle cards and runes. I’m very much a beginner though. I’ve had a lot better connection with the Earth Woman deck than I have with the traditional Rider Waite deck, so it’s much easier for me to read intuitively with that one.

I’m pretty sure I don’t have the patience or focus required for scrying!

Greenbriar,

You’re the one who turned me on to the Earth Woman deck. I am still not quite ready to use it. I am not quite confident in my RWS deck to go to different imagery. But I love the Earth Woman deck.

For me its definitely Tarot, Ouija Boards, Pendulums and free writing. But I have been reading up and practicing reading candle melts. But I always go back to Tarot, something about the cards just call to me and every time I do a reading either for myself or someone else they are correct. Its like they are an extension of my body, mind and soul. :black_cat: :ghost_cat:

I would suggest having a go with the Earth Woman deck. I found it a lot easier to connect with than the sort of medieval characters in the Rider Waite deck.

I have been trying to scry but am unable to do it. I think maybe my brain wont stay still long enough. Tea leaf reading is another that I really want to learn to do as well.

Hmmm interesting. Thank you for this. Sometimes we worry as we age about what we will still be able to do while we watch ourselves fall apart. This is heartening. I will hang onto this quote as a confidence builder, if you don’t mind.

I am looking getting a pendulum. However, this will probably sound preocular. When I was in Secondary School as part of our curriculum we had to have a science subject I took Human Biology. There was a palmistry hand and I noticed there were lines on it and so myself and my friends looked up some of their meanings for fun.

In our needlework class I thread a needle ready to stitch my project I was making a skirt when I jokingly held the threaded needle over my left hand and asked how many children I would potentially have and said swing left to right for a boy and a wide circle for a girl. the needle started to move.

I tried it again on my Mum, Nana, Auntie, anyone I knew who had children. It predicted correctly in the right order. It even predicted children that might have been born.

My reading was a boy then girl however, I had a motorcycle accident and broke my pelvis in three places. I tried it again when I met my husband and the needle was stationary my Gynaecologist said that my pelvis would not be able to sustain a pregancy. We were devastated but have come to terms with it and are happy with our fur-babies.

May be even just a needle and thread can be used for divination.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. :people_hugging:

You sound very gifted with just your needle and thread! I’ve never heard of anyone doing this with such consistent results - that’s amazing.

I have accepted that my path has changed, I am blessed to be with my wonderful Husband and my fur-babies Millie & Bronte.

In the Layrinthos Tarot Deck there is a topic on “Finding the Keys”. Every time I unlock one from my subconscious another memory is released. It like today I remembered that my Wand is called ‘Acula” is Latin for “Small Needle” and the core is “Pixie Hair”. I am only 4ft 11 inches. my work colleagues call me “Pixie on Speed”. It was not the Wand I originally bespoke ordered. It found me and I have a very strong bond with it. I do not know how many more keys there are to find but it is all part of your journey discovering them.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

It is Pink Moon today blessings :cherry_blossom::pink_heart::waxing_gibbous_moon:

My favorite divination method changes based on the season and varies depending on the question or information I’m seeking. All that being said, Tarot was my first entry into divination and was the only thing I used for years. Oracle was a very late addition for me, as it took a long time to find a deck that resonated with me. Currently, I’m working on creating a seasonal tree oracle set. Two other divination methods that I like but am still learning and practicing are Elder Futhark Runes and casting bones. Using a pendulum or scrying never really clicked for me.

Using the desert island thought experiment, if I had to choose only one to have with me, I’d choose tarot as I could read it using the traditional methods, read it as a story based on the art, or use it as a yes/no method.
