Good paper for burning

For banishment rituals with fire, bay leaf is a beloved classic for a reason :black_heart:
However sometimes I would prefer paper, especially if I have more than a few words to write. I’ve tried burning printer paper, and I can’t really recommend it  It tends to extinguish on its own, and having to light it again doesn’t feel very magical at all. Also I would like it to burn as cleanly as possible, and not go up into (in the worst case still glowing :grimacing:) little flakes that land all over the place. Do you have recommendations for paper that’s just made to be consumed by fire? :smiling_imp:

It has been a long time since I was able to burn spells in the wood burning stove in our basement, but Mom taught me to use newsprint to start fires. Any paper will fly if not kept under something heavy in a light wind, so safety is big.

The brown craft paper that comes in rolls is made similarly to newsprint. It used to be called newsprint. I also had good luck with lined school paper.

Of course, in all that time, the process of paper making could have changed to include chemicals to reduce fires before the product is sold. Storage is always the biggest issue because there is so much in one place. Having lots of paper in one place tends to lead to internal combustion, or at least that’s what my grandmother told my mother when she wanted Mom to get rid of her paper dolls in her youth.

Best of luck in your search.

I’ve used newspaper to start fires in fireplaces, and that does burn beautifully :fire:
I could try if I could find similar paper somewhere, maybe craft stores, thank you for the tip :sparkling_heart:

Hmmm, I do have a roll of thick brown parchment like paper for covering floors for renovations and other messy things, I could give that a try too! :smiley_cat:

At a point in my youth I liked to ceremonially burn all my schoolwork at the end of the year, I faintly remember that the lined paper did burn pretty nicely…

I wonder if she had ever heard of libraries… :joy:
It’s a good point though with the process of papermaking, especially with books and other printed materials. Also I’ve noticed that paper that’s made for printing is not the best kind to be written on by hand. The absorption of the ink feels very different.

Thank you :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I like to use parchment paper and lined notebook paper along with bay leaves~! I also have a set of vintage stationery paper that I like to burn on special occasions.

I use lined or computer paper. I’d like to use bayleafs too but they seem so crunchy and brittle

I’m setting fires daily, I use coal as a base for the fire and the brown paper bags. The coal is heavy to put ontop of the brown paper so stops it flying about and brown paper lights up a treat, the coal also keeps it lit.

I like to use parchment paper. I’ve always had good experiences with burning it during spells.
