I might have mentioned before i had macaws, but unfortunately before moving we had to sell them for a few reasons:- after buying the second adult female macaw (Skittles) it made the first male one (Blue) wild and he was no longer able to be pat or picked up leaving me to have to have them in their cages for safety to both the macaws and myself. I was told i shouldn’t have brought adult macaws as i do not know where they came from and their history and since they sre very intelligent birds they dont forgive or forget, and maon reasons adult macaws are sold are as they are neglected (pet store that specialises in macaws told me).
Long story short i gave them to a good home where the owner had expereince with wild macaws and we were able to use the money to support us moving
After having to part with my macaws to ensure they were cared for, i promised myself i would buy a macaw but as a baby and get history of how they were brought up to avoid they same issue. This lead me to adopt Peanut not sure the sex yet (dont mind but will have to pull 2 feathers out to determine which i do not want to do) and is current 9 weeks. I have to formula feed 3 times a day and ensure their is a bowl of nut, fruit and seed mix as peanut is starting to learn to eat (inhave experience with formula feeding with cockatiels and it is a very sensitive process due to their crop).
I also recently moved peanut into a mansion of a cage since they are now climbing out of the massive storage container with wood chips (like the handraiser said would happen soon after) and after a week of deciding to spend $500+ on a new cage, we decided to settle on repainting (checked the paint is safe) and putting new wheels on the cage:
Peanut loved cuddles, sleeps on me when i watch a movie at night and follows me everywhere when out of the cage and then sits on me.
I am so happy as being a carer leaves me to be at home most of the time and that is exactly perfect since macaws need plenty of attention.
Aww! What a pretty baby! I’m glad you got a new one and that you are able to raise this baby as you need! I worked at the zoo a long time ago and we had macaws. We had one that hated me… no one knew why, but he went after me when I tried to clean his cage once and I couldn’t even be in the same room with him if he was loose. The keepers said the same thing - I probably reminded him of someone not very nice. I’ve been a little leary of macaws since then too! Ha! They are gorgeous, but I don’t think they’re the pet for me!
@AileyGrey Thank you and yes i agree there are just certain types of macaws who just decide nope they want nothing to do with you like my second adult one i adopted skittles did not want anything to do with me. I mean i resembled her previous owner very much from scarf to features and we could pass as sisters but did not want to bind. Blue the male did when he was alone and when Skittles came he just started biting a lot and not waiting to play like before.
@Mystique Thank you i am so happy and glad that this time round i did some digging into the breeder and the handraiser as well to ensure the bird was well cared for from day one. Not that there is nothing wrong if the macaw had a previous owner, however it is sad when i felt the macaws were not comfortable with me.
@Amethyst Thank you i am so proud to be able to call this little cutie my own companion and Peanut is so chill with the kids too. Will say hubby is a little jealous that the baby is getting so much attention and they are getting all the cuddles lately but i can see his side smile at how cute Peanut is Now all i have to do is find out the sex but it breaks my heart to think i would have to pull out 2 feathers right from the stem so will put it off and maybe see a vet or someone as the other alternative is blood test which doesn’t sound nice and Peanut has just started bonding with me trusting me
@TheMuslimWitch Congratulations on your new baby! That’s such a wonderful yet time-consuming time when a close-to-weaning parrot comes home! So very exciting!!!
I can just hear the baby parrot noises now happy sigh and goodness, do they smell good too!
I’m a Spiritual Healer and let me tell you, I get great Energy from Peanut. I don’t know anything about macaws though. But wow are they beautiful to look at. I am so happy that you are giving him/her a new home where he/she will be taken care of!
Thank you so much and welcome When i went to pick out Peanut she/he was one of 3 siblings in the hatch, and although Peanut’s other siblings were very lively showing that they are healthy and growing by walking around and trying to climb their cage, Peanut seemed unsure and was even smaller than his/her siblings and wanted to kind of hid between the two and make him/herself small. Obviously i would be scared too if a random stranger came to my place too, but i felt a strong connection with Peanut! My partner even told me to “pick another one” but i just felt like i knew how they felt and knew i didn’t want them to feel this way so i chose her/him.
