How did you know when your deity chose you?

Baby witch here. I’m at the very beginning of my journey. I have not been chosen by a diety yet. Is there something I should do to help this along? How did you know when you were chosen?

Hi @Fleurith-Dawnpetal, we’re excited to accompany you on this journey!

Very good questions, although I’m not sure my answer will be so short so apologies, and bear with me…

For me, it never ever occurred to me that a Deity would want to communicate with me… why would they, I’m just me. Lack of self-esteem or not, I’m literally one of billions of humans, so I just figured I’d go it alone. As for when did they choose me… I think it was a long, long time ago… I just didn’t see it. Even the signs I’ve received in the past 4 months… I saw them, I just didn’t think they were signs for me, they were just a lot of coincidences. Maybe I just wasn’t ready to see it, but the signs have been there for about 30 years, since I dabbled the first time.

As for if there’s anything you can do to help it along, that’s completely up to you. I waited until the signs literally dropped in front of me, then I decided to bite the bullet and have a reading from a stanger to confirm that this is my path. The validation and confirmation that I wasn’t actually crazy kind of opened my eyes, and sooo many things made sense. The signs were kind of obvious ever since. Then, I decided to just ask the universe who was sending the signs, using tarot, runes, and the extraordinary individuals in this community - I like to triple-confirm things when I can.

Maybe, if you’re into Tarot, try this spread:

Or, if you’re more comfortable asking yes and no questions, maybe you could use your cards/pendulum more direct yes and no questions to determine who it is. For example:

Is my deity with me? Are you male or female?
Are you in the Greek/Egyptian/Roman/etc. Pantheon? Is there more than one Deity?

Hopefully that will help enough to get you started, if you have any more questions please do ask, everyone is really friendly and knowledgeable. Also, do feel free to let us know when you find out who your Deity is, or if you need help interpreting the cards!

You can always do some research into the various Deities, and see if you feel a connection to any of them… and don’t worry, if the connection is there, you’ll just know, trust me. For me, it was a feeling deep in my soul while my skin was tingling with electricity. Look into what they’re about, offerings etc., then try meditating and find out if they want to work with you too.

Cernunnos showed up while I was on a walk and lay down in the grass near me.

Gwynn ap Nudd was a pair of eyes looking into my window from a stormy sky. I was home alone, scared of the storm.

The Grim Reaper sort of took over for my father when I was too young to understand.

My advice to you is to just be yourself. If you need help, ask in general and let them volunteer their services. However that’s me. You don’t have to.

You got some good answers already. I just want to let you know, you don’t need to have a regular deity you worship. I don’t work with one particular deity. When I’m getting ready to do a spell I sit and meditate about who would be best to assist. When I feel I know who I would like to assist, I ask them to join me and assist in making my spell more powerful. I always thank them after and give them some sort of offering. Also, I don’t always use a deity. Many of my spells I do without calling upon a deity.

You don’t need to rush into having a deity and always know, you can change deity’s or add them at anytime.

Hello lovely. @georgia and @Mystique and @Nikki-Phoenix have wonderful advice.

I’d like to add that sometimes a deity shows you who they are by events of their story mimicking yours. Here’s a link to my experience with deity ( for better or worse )

Loki to invite in or no? :warning: Alcohol is mentioned in this post

Fulltrui or not to Fulltrui

Have fun :grinning:

You’ve gotten some great advice so far. I want to add a different perspective: It’s okay if a deity does not choose you. That shouldn’t stop you from reaching out to anyone you feel you want to work with or honor. I personally don’t believe that deities choose people to reach out to. I used to, but my experience has taught me that the Gods exist around us in their own ways and if we can see them or feel them, then we can interact with them and ask for their assistance. This isn’t to invalidate everyone else’s experiences and beliefs, so please take my advice for what it is  my personal experiences and gnosis. I feel very small in the presence of the Gods, so it feels weird for me to think they would seek me out from the billions of other people on the planet.

It’s also okay to not work with a deity and instead just honor them for the role they play in the world. It’s also perfectly fine to not work with gods at all!

I think it’s important to reflect on why you want to work with a deity and what that means exactly for you and your practice.
