How do you store your herbs

Wondering what the most effective way to organize and store my herbs is. How do you guys do it? I would like to see the name of each one and I have them all labeled but that’s where I’m stuck. Appreciate any advice/help,
With all my love and light :woman_mage::crystal_ball:

I think the most important thing is just making sure they’re bottled in a way that they won’t get dusty or moldy, I just use our kitchen herb bottles and have them out where I can find them easily. I’ve seen some people keep them on a dedicated kitchen shelf, or a book shelf, in a box, etc.

You could do something as simple as recycled cooking herb bottles or small mason jars (heck there are tiny bottles on Amazon, too) and simply label them with a bit of masking tape and a pen. Easy to remove, easy to put together and store.

Dark bottles keep longer, if they might be exposed to harsh light. Or you can keep them tucked away in a cabinet. I don’t use dark bottles. Like I said I just use store bought herbs and keep them in the bottle they come in. It’s what I can afford. :sake: :herb:

Edit: heat can be hard on herbs, too. Just something to keep in mind!

Edit 2: I have some cute strong magnetic shelves we got for our fridge from Amazon. I put most of my herbs there! It works really well and keeps them from the heat of the stove.

First off, greetings and welcome @MysticMomma420!

I keep my herbs in reused glass spice jars and glass canning jars. I keep them in my pantry, which is temperature-controlled and has no sunlight. My labels are pretty simple - just the herb name, date purchased, and where I purchased them. Sometimes, I just pull off the labels off the bags the herbs came in and put them on the jars. I’ll even add the name in Sharpie on the lid (which washes off with rubbing alcohol so you can resuse the jars.

Hi, @MysticMomma420! Nice to meet you! I mainly use kitchen spices. So they’re up in my cabinet. I have my mugwort and rose petals in a bag in a drawer. I don’t have enough room for shelves and a pretty display. I wish I could, though, that would be awesome!

Hi, @MysticMomma420 and Merry Meet!

I use typical dried kitchen herbs and keep them with my spices. My kitchen is small and has a unique pull-out spice cabinet with three shelves. This makes it easy to see each label.

I’m also anal enough to put them in alphabetical order, more or less, so I don’t have to paw through them all to find what I’m after.

During summer months and into fall, I grow fresh herbs, but in my cold climate I can’t do this year round.

Hope this helps. Welcome! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Blessings. :raising_hands:

Merry meet @MysticMomma420 - welcome to the forum!

I’ll echo what others have said about using dried herbs that are shelf-stable. They last longer and can be used for a wider variety of purposes than fresh herbs. Don’t get me wrong, fresh plants are great too! But they do generally have to be used right away to prevent them getting spoiled.

I keep any herbs that are food grade quality in jars, bottles, or bags in the kitchen pantry or my tea shelf. Lower-quality herbs are stored separately and used for spells, candle anointment oils, decorations, and crafts. I try to be good about labeling everything with the herb name and when it was dried, but I haven’t been able to keep things organized alphabetically ( #witchygoals - someday I’ll manage it, but not today! )

It sounds like you could benefit from having a set of the same type of jars/bottles/bags that either stack or line up neatly together. Having a set of matching vessels with a clear label is a good way to keep things clean and organized. Although it is a problem when you keep adding herbs and run out of matching jars! Still, it could be a place to start.

Whatever you choose to do for your herbs, I hope you find a method that works well for you! Good luck and blessed be :sparkles:

Hello, I store my herbs in used wooden cigar boxes you can find on line especially for dried roots. Otherwise I used cleaned jars that I can label, jam jars, condiment jars etc. Never plastic, and keep them away from heat or sun.

Good luck

Welcome @MysticMomma420!

I have mine in zipper bags at the moment. I bought removable labels and cut them in half, but my handwriting is tiny, anyway. I print the name of the herb and the correspondences. Then I put the smaller bags into a mini backpack, which is easy to grab if I need to travel or move. This is less organized than what you seem to be looking for, though.

What I’d like to do is to make a scrapbook for them all. Tape the zipper bag to a page in a binder so I can organize them alphabetically or by use. Decorate with pics of the plant and correspondences. It reminds me of having to collect tree leaves for high school, but with an ultimate use so I can keep it around longer.

Omg I love that idea, I’m a bit of journal lover, and scrapbooking, or anything artsy if a total passion of mine so that would make it way more fun for me! Maybe I’ll test that one out and see how it goes. Thank you for the idea, and it’s nice to meet u!

My pleasure! I look forward to learning from and with you!

If anyone finishes such a project, I’d like to see it, for decorating ideas. It seems to me that we might need thicker card stock for taping the zipper bags, to support the weight of the herbs and bags themselves. I may try using construction paper to test it’s strength.
