Hello, friends! ![]()
I realized recently that we have so many forum tutorials covering almost every topic, but there wasn’t one for adding links to posts!
You being here and sharing your knowledge, love, and guidance with the community is what makes Spells8 and the Infinite Roots Coven a wonderful place to be. Sometimes, there will be links to other websites and resources that you want to share – and we want you to share them!
Knowing how to use links here in the forum is an important skill to have, whether you are writing your own post or navigating someone else’s. Keep reading to learn about the different ways you can add links to posts!
Using The Text Editor Options
The text editor is the little box that pops up when you go to create a post or reply to a post. This is where you type your wonderful words, share your images, and connect with the coven. Adding a link from the text editor’s built-in options is an easy way to share a link.
Ready? Here is how you do it!
Click the button that looks like a chain link.
![]()
That will open a pop-up that lets you type in the link and the link text.
It will also let you search for a topic in the forum to include as a link.
Then, once you’ve got your link typed in there and the text you want to appear, just click “Insert” and it will show right up! When it’s inserted into the text editor, it looks like this.
[How to Use and Edit a Wiki Post! [Forum Tutorial]](https://forum.spells8.com/t/how-to-use-and-edit-a-wiki-post-forum-tutorial/61023)
The text for the link goes between the brackets [] and the URL goes right next to it between the parentheses ().
Copy And Paste
Yup, you read that right! The easiest way to add a link to your post is by copying it and pasting it directly into the post. The link will show up in a few different ways depending on how you format your post and the metadata associated with the link. Here are some examples and an explanation of how to make the link look that way.
Example One - Link Card
This link is called a card – it shows the site image, name, date, description, and estimated reading time. Not every link will show a card, but most of them do. To make a link show up like this in your post, simply paste the URL directly into the text. See my screenshot below for the side-by-side view!
Example Two – Auto-Linked
You may have noticed with some links that they show up as a clickable URL. This does not work if you copy and paste a link on its own line like the example above. Instead, the link needs to be within a block of text, like https://www.spells8.com , or a line in a list.
Text Formatting With Markdown
There may be times where you want to include a link in your post but you want the text to say something specific. This is where Markdown comes in handy! If you didn’t know, Markdown is just the name of the coding language that the forum software uses. It’s why we use the asterisk (*) to make bold and italic text rather than HTML (<b> <strong> <i> etc.)
With Markdown, adding a link with text is super simple. Remember the first example above where you inserted the link with text editor? Yup, we will just take the Markdown template and use it to make a new link!
Put simply, it will look like this: [**link text goes here**](*URL goes here*)
To translate that to a link, it will look like this:
[Spells8 has the best online coven!](https://www.spells8.com)
So, what does that look like as a link? Well, here you go!
Spells8 has the best online coven!
See? Easy as that!
I hope this little tutorial helps you add links to your posts whenever you need them. If you have any questions (or need more tutorials) just let me know!
Happy linking and sharing! ![]()
