What Are Kau Cim (Oracle Sticks) & How Do I Use Them? ![]()

A few of you asked about the Kau Cim (Chi Chi) sticks I mentioned in my intro, so I wanted to share a quick explanation of what they are and how I incorporate them into my daily practice!
I’ve been using them for a few years alongside my morning and nightly Tarot pulls. Whenever I need clarity on a decision, feel worried, or just want to see what energies are around, I turn to them. You simply ground yourself, breathe deep, shake the cylinder, and let Spirit / the Universe guide the right stick out.
Here is a quick breakdown of the tradition and how it works:
───
What is Kau Cim (求籤)? ![]()
• Ancient Divination: Originating in ancient China (often used in Taoist, Buddhist, and folk traditions), Kau Cim is one of the oldest forms of fortune-telling and guidance.
• The Tools: A set contains numbered bamboo sticks housed inside a special cylinder. Each number corresponds to a specific poem, oracle verse, or historical story that holds a piece of wisdom or answer to your question.
───
How to Use Them Step-by-Step ![]()

1. Center & Ground: Hold the cylinder in both hands. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and clear your mind.
2. Focus Your Intent: Focus on a specific question, a worry you want clarity on, or simply ask for guidance for your day/path ahead.
3. Shake the Cylinder: Gently tilt the cup and shake it in a rhythmic, upward motion. You don’t force a stick out—as you shake, the kinetic movement causes the sticks to rise.
4. The Falling Stick: Eventually, one single stick will rise higher than the rest and fall out onto the table or floor. (If multiple sticks fall at once, put them back, recenter, and shake again).
5. Read the Verse: Look at the number carved or painted on the fallen stick. Look up the corresponding verse/poem in your Kau Cim oracle book.
6. Reflect: Meditate on the story, poem, and advice given, just like reading a Tarot card!

It’s a beautiful, tactile, and peaceful divination tool that really connects you to the flow of the universe. If you love Tarot, Runes, or I Ching, it’s an amazing practice to explore!
