This article will explore Black Moon Lilith, a lesser known point on our Natal Charts.
What is Black Moon Lilith?
Unlike the planets and asteroids, Black Moon Lilith is not a physical object. Instead, it is a point on the chart that is calculated based on the Moon’s orbit around the Earth. A little bit of Astronomy here:
The Moon does not or it the Earth in a perfect circle. Instead, it follows an elliptical path. At on point on this path, the Moon is at its closest point to Earth. This is known as the Perigee. Conversely, the Moon also passes a point in its orbit where it is at its furthest from Earth. This is the Apogee. The point of Apogee determines the location of Black Moon Lilith on your natal chart.
The Moon’s orbit fluctuates due to the influence of Earth’s gravity, taking 9 years to rotate. This means that Black Moon Lilith spends around 9 months in each zodiac sign. It is represented with this glyph:
Who is Lilith?
For me, Lilith is not a figure I was particularly clued up on. In fact, the only mention or depiction of her that I was aware of was of Satan’s wife in the Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Like the planets, I like to know the mythology of the astrological namesake as it can often help in understanding the traits associated with them. Therefore, I spent a bit of time reading up on Lilith.
I found that she was a figure from Jewish mythology and the first wife of Adam. Apparently the Old Testament contains two contradictory versions of the creation story, one of which mentions Adam’s first wife, with whom he was displeased. He always wanted to be the dominant sexual partner and would not allow Lilith an opportunity in this role. She left him, defying God’s orders to return to her husband.
As a punishment she was told by angels that they would kill 100 of her children every day for her disobedience. In revenge, she vowed to harm babies and children. It was also said, that she sneaked back into the Garden of Eden and had sex with Adam while he slept, thus creating the Lilim. These were demons to replace her children killed by the angels. Eventually, Lilith agreed not to harm children as long as they wore an amulet bearing the names of the three angels.
When I read this, it seemed to me that perhaps Lilith had been demonised for perhaps daring to demand equality with her male counterpart. She rebelled against authority and refused to submit, making her appear dangerous in a patriarchal society. There is also a sense of fear in allowing female autonomy as this would have threatened societal norms. Lilith also comes across to me as a scapegoat for natural child mortality related, probably due living conditions of the times when the myths evolved. More recently, the demonisation and scapegoating of Lilith has somewhat dissipated and her refusal to comply could now be seen as an act of power and equality. She could be seen as representing the right to autonomy and freedom.
