Here is another quick lesson in a less well known area of astrology; your signature sign.
You may be aware of the Big Three in astrology; your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. You may not know that you also have something called your signature sign. This mini lesson will explore what a signature sign is, how to calculate it, and what it means for you.
What is the signature sign?
Every sign in the zodiac has an element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) and a modality (Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable). The most common element and modality on you birth chart will identify your signature sign. It’s essentially like finding the average of elements and modalities on your chart.
Your sun sign is probably the most well known placement in astrology. Almost everyone knows their sun sign, even those not interested in the subject. However, it is only one part of who you are and a part that many people often cannot resonate with. This is where your signature sign comes it.
While your Sun sign reveals your ego and Ascendant reveals your public persona, the signature sign reveals the energies, qualities and characteristics of the zodiac that YOU feel most connected to. You will be able to relate to these traits more than those of your Sun sign.
Does everyone have a signature sign?
No. Not everyone has a signature sign. This occurs when you have an equal number of planets in 2 elements or modalities, meaning there is no clear “winner”. This an ambiguous signature sign.
How do I find my signature sign?
To find your signature sign, you will need to access your birth chart. Click below to cast your chart if you need to:
You will need your birth date, location and time.
The focus here is looking at the SIGNS that the planets lie in on your chart. Here is a reminder of the glyphs that represent the planets and signs on your chart:
You also need to know the element linked to each sign. Here is a reminder:
Fire: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius
Earth: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
Air: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
Water: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces
Go through each planet and determine what sign each is in. Give one point to the element linked to the signs. E.g. if the sun is in Aries, give 1 point to fire, if the Moon is in Taurus, give 1 point to earth etc.
Count the totals and note the element with the most points.
We now repeat the process, this time allocating points depending on the modality of the signs. E.g. if the sun is in Aries, give 1 point to cardinal, if the Moon is in Taurus, give 1 point to fixed etc.
Here is a reminder of the modalities:
Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn
Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius
Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces
Count the totals and note the modality with the most points.
You should now have a combination of element and modality. Only one sign of the zodiac has this combination. This will be your signature sign. Look at the list below to determine yours:

Moon is in Aquarius, an air sign so 1 point to air.
Mercury is in Taurus, an earth sign so 1 point to earth.
Venus is in Aries, an fire sign so 1 point to fire.
Mars is in Scorpio, an water sign so 1 point to water.
Jupiter is in capricorn, an earth sign so 1 point for earth.
Saturn is in Scorpio, a water sign so 1 point to water.
Uranus is in Sagittarius, a fire sign so 1 point for Fire.
Neptune is in Capricorn, an earth sign so 1 point for earth.
Pluto is in Scorpio, a water sign so 1 point to water.
Total points for each element:
Fire: 2
Earth: 4
Air: 1
Water: 3
On my chart, earth is the dominant element.
Now repeat the process for the modalities:

Fixed: 6
Mutable: 1
On my chart, fixed is the dominant modality.
My combination is fixed and earth. Looking above, i can see that my signature sign is Taurus which is also my sun sign!
What does my signature sign mean?

I don’t have a Signature Sign. What can I do?
If your signature sign is ambiguous, you can work with the 2 signs that emerge as most prominenent and determine which resonates most. Perhaps it will be a combination of the 2.
Alternatively, look at the sign that the Ascendent is sitting in. Determine this sign’s element and modality and it it to the scores to see if it reaks the deadlock. If it doesnt, you probably dont ha e one signature sign.
