Learning tarot cards

Hello! I have always been an Oracle card reading for the last 16 years. Never was pulled to do Tarot cards but within the last year or so I have picked up the interest in learning how to use them. I have two decks and for the life of me get it. Is there in hints or tricks to help learn them?

Hey there! There is a great course on the site on learning to read the tarot. Then there are books. A lot of books. LOL! Find one you like the look of and start reading. Hope that helps!

Trying to learn the meaning of all 72 cards is hard to do. I have been reading cards for about 30 years and still use the book as a guide. If you use a simple deck with easy to decipher pictures it’s easier to learn. Something along the lines of a Rider-Waite deck is the easiest to learn. But don’t get frustrated if you still need to use the guide book. A lot of times I will get a ā€œfeelingā€ of what the card is saying and will go with that instead of using the guide book.

@Artemisia does a wonderful monthly tarot journey that helps with learning as well. https://forum.spells8.com/t/october-tarot-journey/64294

Tarot does have a bit of a learning curve, for sure!

You could start with single card pulls, no question asked or no prompt and take your time getting to know the card you drew.

Both Rachel Pollack"s Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom: A Tarot Journey to Self Awareness and Tamara DeGaea’s Tarot Rapid Read Resources are great books

Other than the resources from Spells8 listed above by @Amethyst , I recommend Biddy Tarot and Labyrinthos.

Depending on how you learn best, reading books, online, writing,g or watching videos, there are resources that will help. I’m old school and reading a book and taking written notes works best for me.

My advice is to take it slow, be patient, use your intuition, ask questions on the forum, but most importantly, have fun! :pink_heart:

Spells8 has a selection of antique tarot books which can be downloaded.

Oops!! Just now realized I typed 72 instead of 78 for the number of cards in a tarot deck. Sorry for my mistake.

A tip for the forum is that if you want to respond to several people without waiting the required 5 minutes, hit the at sign: @ for each person. It brings up a list of people to respond to. If you don’t see who you want to mention, type the first letter or two to bring up all members of the forum. That way, you don’t have to type out their whole name, and it emails them that you are talking to them.

You can also highlight part of their message to you. A pop up will let you choose to quote them to respond or to copy to your clipboard so you can paste it later. This will also notify them.

Hope this helps! :purple_heart:

I bought a deck from Temu called Learning Tarot cards. I’ve added pictures here. They truly have been a blessing! I learn so much faster.

I have seen cards like that! They look like fabulous cards for learning!

They are! I’m able to connect the meanings to the cards much quicker. Going from cards to guidebook can be frustrating and really interrupts the flow of the reading. Highly recommend!

I like those cards. I will have to see if they are on Amazon and get them and try those.

Great question! I am looking forward for our great family here at Spells 8 to explain your answer. I have been wanting to learn and really need to practice the correct way (?).

Merry Meet Stephanie,

Like you I also have a ā€œstarterā€ deck. It is the RWS deck, but had explanations, like the ones you have shown. Mine were about $20 on ETSY. I have other decks, but this is very helpful. If a card confuses my reading, I have a little explanation there (without the interruption of looking in the book), it helps me understand that particular card better, and makes learning different styles/artwork easier. Hi @michele12 :waving_hand:t4:

You’ve had some great advice from the Coven, allow me to add my thoughts if I may?

Firstly, I recommend a learning deck like @Eira_of_the_Living_Hearth, I personally bought this one in black as my first deck, and she will always be my first

Secondly, and I wish someone had told me this, do not just try to learn the cards, because that’s kind of like study for an exam. The thing is, exams are mostly a test of memory, not knowledge; ask the same questions 5 years later and see if that A is still an A lol! Also, it’s worth noting the math - there are 78 cards, and each card has at least 3 meanings, some have up to 9. So, let’s say you tried to learn/memorise 5 meanings for all 78 cards which is 78 x 5 = 390… not impossible, of course, but it does provide a certain perspective.

Thirdly, there’s a reason each card has more than one keyword, and that’s because they are subject to interpretation, an individual’s interpretation and, as we are all different, we all see different things.

My advice would be to learn what each card means to you; create a relationship with the cards and listen to what they tell you. Anyone who comes to you for a reading is coming for your insight, your intuition, your interpretation of the cards. They could just as easily have pulled cards themselves but they come to you, so trust that. After doing the course here, I studied other courses and decided what resonates with me and what doesn’t. For example, most people regard the 6 of Cups as a card of nostalgia, but I see nurture in that card; am I wrong… No, I see something different.

Just like Oracle cards, Tarot is a system where beauty is literally in the eye of the beholder. Trust your Eye(s), trust your intuition and let it guide you on your journey. I hope that helps!

Merry Day Nikki-Phoenix,

My cards are like yours, same pictures and all the notes. That is why it helps so much. Then when I see other art work, I am able to ā€œseeā€ what helps me to interpret that artwork. Lady Gene :magic_wand: :divination_crystal_ball:

A post was split to a new topic: Face up vs reversed tarot cards

Hi @leilani1 :waving_hand:t4:

I know exactly what you mean, it helps me to ā€œseeā€ too! I find it most fascinating when I see artwork that’s in direct conflict with RWS, and that makes me think about what the artist intended and how that differs from (or is similar to) the original meanings of the tarot.
