I enjoy using tarot cards in my practice but I am barely familiar with them and always have to look up the meanings. What’s the best way to learn tarot quickly? Does anyone recommend any books or have any advice for someone looking to get deeper into it?
Lionharts’ Tarot Challenge for August
The above is good practice. I prefer runes, but I’ve learnt alot of tarot from the above.
This course is good
I’ll tag in @MeganB @Artemisia and @BryWisteria all fabulous with Tarot and they can recommend books.
If you want simple and fast Tarot Rapid Read Resource by Tamara DeGaea is the gem for you. Plus it’s easy to carry around everywhere. If you want to go deep and study, I highly recommend Holistic Tarot by Bennebell Wa but be warned it’s an incredible in-depth text with close to 900 pages.
Two non-book ideas for studying might depend on how you learn best - rote memorization (make your own flashcards with keywords and drill) or practice, practice, practice reading every day.
I am nowhere near the expert reader that Megan, Bry, or many, many others in the forum are, so hopefully they will be able to offer better advice!
Learning tarot can be a daunting task depending on how you look at it and the way you want to learn the cards. There are a few different methods you can use.
– memorization
– intuitive reading
– learning from books
– continuous practice
Each of these methods has its own pros and cons, and each one will be different depending on your learning style. For example, I hate having to memorize things so memorization doesn’t work for me. I’m more of a hands-on learner and do better with practice and journaling.
I honestly don’t think there’s a way to learn tarot quickly. I mean, there are 78 cards in total. That’s 78 different meanings when just reading one card by itself. Double that to 156 if you read reversals in a specific way. Then multiply that by the millions of different ways the cards can be combined for different questions or situations.
There’s nothing wrong with having to look at the book or look up the meanings of cards while you’re reading them, even if you’re reading for someone else. I’ve been reading the cards consistently for a few years now and even I still have to look in my notes or at the book every now and then I can tell you that with consistent practice such as pulling a card every day and actively journaling about it, how you feel, the things you see, and what it means definitely helps.
Hi @Mattie_Nox,
You’ve already got some wonderful advice from Tracy, Artemsia, and Megan - all of whom are talented diviners and readers!
Adding to what they’ve said, I think the absolute fastest way is reading on pure intuition. Pick up a card: What does it remind you of? What does it make you feel? Take those thoughts and feelings, whatever they may be, and BAM - you have a reading. And it’s a valid reading - going on intuition is a wonderful way to connect with and use your cards, and is a method used by readers at all levels of experience.
It’s something anyone can do right now, no prior reading experience or memorization necessary
If you’re hoping to learn the traditional meanings of the cards, it’s mostly a project of memorization. Learning will depend on the time and effort you have to put into studies over a period of time. Different methods will work for different people here - some might enjoy reading books on tarot theory or history, while others will make study flashcards and quiz themselves until they have it all down. Others might watch tarot exploration videos on Youtube.
While theory and knowledge are important, I’d most strongly recommend hands-on methods of learning tarot. These can range from daily readings, participating in tarot challenges, having others read for you, or even just sitting with the cards and spending time with them.
There are a lot of great tarot resources already listed. The only other book that comes right to mind is Tarot: Connect with Yourself, Develop Your Intuition, Live Mindfully by Tina Gong. It’s my favorite tarot book with ways to read the cards for self-development and reflection.
Wishing you all the best with your tarot studies, Mattie - I hope you can find methods and strategies that will help you grow and develop your skills! Good luck and happy readings
