i just remembered that, a few years ago, i was being told that i was a leo, a virgo, both, neither, all sorts of things. for context, my birthday is august 23rd, and i’ve always been big into zodiac signs and their meanings. i definitely identify more as a leo than a virgo, though some of my traits (negative, in particular) definitely come from the virgo side.
thoughts?

Hello! While I’m not an astrology expert, I do know that it’s best to have your birth time to accurately determine your natal chart. Sign cusps aren’t true cusps in that there isn’t any real overlap between two signs – one sign ends and another begins. Here’s an example from Cafe Astrology
If you are born on a date that makes your Sun sign unclear, the following tables can help. How to use the chart: example, if you want to look up the Sun sign for a birth date of August 22nd, 1969 at 10:00 PM EDT, note that the Sun entered Leo on July 22nd, 1969 at 8:48 PM, and entered Virgo on August 23rd, 1969, at 3:43 AM EDT. Therefore, the person has a Leo Sun sign. After August 23rd, 1969 at 3:43 AM EDT, the person has a Virgo Sun sign. Times given are Eastern Time.
They also have a free natal chart tool that will help you chart your astrological placements. You can check that out here: https://astro.cafeastrology.com
In my experience, this is actually pretty common. I think it’s because we are more than just our sun sign. So, looking at my own placements, I’m a Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon, and Gemini Rising. I resonate heavily with some of the Scorpio traits, but that is only my ‘outward’ appearance, so to speak, because of how the sun sign works. My ‘inner world’ is represented more by Sagittarius, and I’m still learning about the Rising sign I definitely recommend digging into your full natal chart!
And then when you’re ready to learn more about astrology, we have a course for members of Spells8 called Stellar Foundations
I’m also not an astrology expert, but in terms of signs, Megan is right that they can be calculated exactly within a system (usually either Whole Sign Houses or Placidus). You may have different signs depending on which system you use.
From what I’ve seen, I think it’s fairly common for someone born very close to the end of one zodiac season/start of the next to relate to traits from one or both of those signs. I’m a big believer in liminality, and I think that “in between” period where something is ending and something new is beginning could lead to a mix of energies or traits.
At the same time, I also fully agree with what Megan said about looking at your natal chart as a whole - sun signs tend to get the most attention (often because they are one of the easiest signs to calculate), but we are a beautiful collage of all the influences in our chart. The influences you feel may be partially from being born on the cusp, but I imagine other presences across your chart will also have an effect
All that is to say, keep on exploring your chart! There are so many wonderful and exciting things to discover there. Good luck and have fun!
