Litha/Summer Solstice this year - Thursday or Friday?

Hi all - I’ve read that the summer solstice is Thursday, June 20 this year, 4:50 pm where I live. However, I see that the annual sunrise watching at Stonehenge is going to be on Friday in England (with celebrating starting on Thursday. I like to watch the sunrise on the Solstice where I live (I also watch the Stonehenge livestream). If you do that as part of your practice, are you planning to watch the sunrise on Thursday or Friday? I’m inclined to do the sunrise portion of my celebrating on Friday, but wanted to hear your thoughts. Also - when is it technically Litha this year (and LOL does it really matter this much! I obsess over everything).

Hi @mary25,

Great question!

Timeandate is showing the exact moment of the solstice for me at Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 4:50 pm EDT. That would be the “peak”, in the same way that each full moon also has a “peak” moment when it the most full.

That being said, while some do time their celebrations around the exact moment, traditionally, solstice and Sabbat celebrations can span for several days before and after the exact moment of the solstice. This also works well for us in the busy modern day - there’s no need to panic and stress about celebrating right on the dot, it’s absolutely fine to enjoy the occasion on your own schedule :grinning:

It sounds like you have some lovely plans to watch the sunrise and savor the time of Litha - I hope you have a wonderful solstice! :sun:

Blessed be
