I have a question for all of you. I recently had a dream about making intention candles. So what these are to me is while making candles, infusing, herbs, and crystals that would magnify the intention. When the candle is burned The intention of what you want is already in there. The one burning the candle obviously can sit their own intentions, but the magnifiers are already in there.
My question to you is, how do I put the herbs in there without them, catching fire or creating too much black smoke or burning really funny. I’m all years. Any suggestions would be a plus I’m also looking for ideas as to what type of herbs to put in to these candles.
One possibility is to scent the melted wax with essential oils or add powdered mixtures of herbs. Go light on the powder- use just enough to know you put it in there.
Another technique is to press herbs into warm wax after molding a pillar candle with a wick which will be far enough from the edges to avoid contact. Such herbs can make floral or sigil patterns for a nice centerpiece.
If the candle is already cooled, anoint it with oil and intention before packaging for later use.
As for what herbs or oils to use, take these courses:
@Francisco, we could use a similar course on crystals and gemstones, if you are interested in creating one.
Others may have more ideas.
Adding extra stuff to candles can pose a big risk when making candles. As you said, they can catch fire and create a lot of smoke, both things we really don’t want when burning candles.
I like Georgia’s suggestion of using essential oils or herb powder mixed into the wax. I’m not a candle maker so I can’t say for sure, but I think those are safer ways to add things to your candles.
As far as crystals, I have seen candles with crystals added on top, but there is always a note with it that says the crystals are to be removed before burning the candle. This is for safety reasons but also because the fire and hot wax can damage the crystal.
For example, I got this candle and there were bits of calendula and herbs on top, as well as an amethyst chip. The crystal chip was far enough away from the wick that I could light the candle but as soon as the wax was soft enough, I removed the crystal to protect it and be safe with my candle.
I would reach out to a professional candle maker or take a candle class to make sure you’re being safe when you make your candles.
I came to say the same thing as @MeganB Burning candles with herbs in it can be dangerous. If you really want to use them I would suggest finely ground herbs. so they burn with the candle. Large bits and bobs are a fire hazard. Yes they look amazing but think about it like this. You have a candle with a single wick in a glass jar with dried lavender sprigs and surrounding the wick. you light the candle as it burns the 3 sprigs catch aflame. You have now gone from a single wick candle to a 4 wick candle. thus creating 4 times the heat as before. As it burns suddenly the jar bursts, Why did this happen All glass has a heat tolerance once you go over that then a catastrophic failure is possible. I could go into more detail but the gist should be good here. Now as for crystals in candles. I would suggest only ones that can be quickly removed should be used as to not damage them. I have seen chips explode due to excessive heat. When I use them I only use them on pillar or sticks so they can fall away while burning.
