My granddaughter has become obsessed with mermaids. So figured it was a good topic to chat about!
Did you know that mermaids have so much more significance than just pretty mythical beings?
For example Ancient Assyrian mythology the goddess Atargatis transformed into a being that was half woman, half fish. She wasn’t described as ugly, but rather divine.
In Greek mythology the original sirens weren’t mermaids at all. They were part woman, part bird… (weird lol) Later art blended sirens and mermaids together. Sirens were often portrayed as beautiful because they lured sailors with their beautiful songs.
Mermaids and Sirens are NOT the same by the way…
Sirens
The sirens were dreaded due to their enchanting songs. Should any sailor hear the sirens’ song he would become consumed by madness and crash his ship against the rocks. On a spiritual level sirens generally symbolize:
• Temptation
• Illusion
• Addiction/Unhealthy attachments
• Danger in silencing your intuition
• Seduction off your path
Mermaids
Mermaids have taken on many roles in folklore. There were benevolent mermaids who would grant gifts. Some were pranksters while others were down right dangerous. On a metaphysical level they generally represent:
• Intuition
• Emotional wisdom
• The Divine Feminine
• Creativity
• Transformation
• Water element
• Mystery/magick
Spiritually speaking, mermaids are a symbol of intuition. Listening to that gut feeling instead of trying to find all the answers externally.
They are also a symbol of emotional release. Our emotions ebb and flow just like the tide. You are not meant to keep them bottled up inside you.
Mermaids symbolize the Divine Feminine. They inspire us to be creative, love ourselves, spread compassion and find our inner strength.
Mermaids carry the energy of transformation. They show us how to go with the flow of change rather than against it.
Being an element of water, mermaids can also teach us to let go. Take time to purge your energy, reconnect with nature, and allow yourself to be reborn.
