When a New Moon occurs twice in a single calendar month, the second one is referred to as a Black Moon. This is the most widely accepted definition, but there’s also an older, seasonal interpretation: if a season (be it spring, summer, autumn, or winter) has four new moons instead of the typical three, the third new moon in that season is also called a Black Moon.
Regardless of which definition you go by, a Black Moon is a rare and meaningful lunar event (an Esbat celebration). In New Moon rituals, this time symbolizes new beginnings, setting intentions, and renewal. However, its infrequency makes it an especially powerful time for deep reflection and significant spiritual work.
