Omens of Doom and Gloom

Owl Superstitions:

Omens of Doom and Gloom: Venture into the ancient lands of Europe and the Americas, and you’ll find tales where owls are seen as harbingers of death or misfortune. The mere glimpse or haunting hoot of an owl in these parts sends shivers down the spine, as it’s often seen as a prelude to someone’s untimely demise.
The Wise and the Learned: Contrasting these ominous beliefs, owls are revered as symbols of wisdom and knowledge in other cultures. This is most notably seen in Ancient Greek mythology, where the owl is a companion to Athena, the esteemed goddess of wisdom. Here, owls embody insight and intellect.
Foretellers of Weather: Delving into the realm of folklore, some believe that owls, with their keen senses, can predict weather changes. It’s said that an owl’s hoot under a clear sky might be foretelling a looming storm, a reminder of nature’s unpredictable fury.
Guardians Against the Unseen: In certain traditions, owls are believed to be powerful protectors against evil spirits. It’s common to see owl feathers or images used as talismans, shielding individuals from unseen dangers lurking in the dark.
Agents of Mystery and Change: The nocturnal and silent flight of owls associates them with mystery and transformation. They often appear in tales of magic and shapeshifting, embodying the mystical and the unknown.

I love owls. I have made macrame owl wall hangings, and have owl figurines in the house. I just love it on the rare occasions when I hear one, or even better, a pair hooting in the middle of the night.

Very interesting that some cultures consider them omens of doom, while others revere them. Thanks for sharing.

I love owls. I have always thought of them as beautiful wise birds. I consider them a sign of good things to come.

The Native Americans in my area consider seeing one during the day as a sign of death. That someone close to them will be dying soon. To prevent this they put out an offering of tobacco to the gods.

One of my other obsessions is wildlife photography and finding an owl is challenging and rewarding. They are one of my favorite birds. They really look wise and I can stare into their eyes forever.
