Pop Culture Tarot

Hey all! I have an idea!

Dangerous, I know. But a few of us got to talking over on the Enter the Court: How to Read Tarot Court Cards (with an Elemental Cheat Chart!) thread about how it sometimes helps to put images that you can relate to images you know to help you find the meaning of them.

The lovely @katharina mentioned she used real movies and rock stars to help her find the meanings. And I admitted that I use Neville Longbottom as my Knight of Pentacles. And Scrooge will always represent the Four of Pentacles to me.

And now I want to do the entire tarot deck with pop culture references. Because I’m weird that way. Like Iron Man and Pepper Pots as the King and Queen of Wands. Batman is the King of Swords. Molly Weasley is the Queen of Pentacles. Athena Grant is the Queen of Cups to me. Not sure why exactly, but that’s who keeps popping up in my mind.

The Magician card is Constantine from the DC Universe. If you’ve seen him, you’ll know. And I don’t mean the Keanu version. Either Derek Hale or ET for the Moon. I’m tied there. I’ve got a three-way tie going for The Chariot. Either KITT, the TARDIS, or the Enterprise. I can make a case for all three.

Bob Ross for the Temperance card. Lucifer Morningstar from the comic/TV show Lucifer. Because he was made for that card! LOL!

And I don’t care if there’s one too many people, the witches from Practical Magic and their Midnight Margaritas remind me of the Three of Cups. Maybe Giles from Buffy for The Hermit. He always seemed to want to be alone and read.

But I thought it would be fun to get other people’s ideas on this, too! So I want to hear from y’all what real or fictional person or scene you think of with certain tarot cards. Does the Eight of Wands remind you of the Transporter beams from the Classic Enterprise? Is Harley Quinn or Deadpool your perfect fool? Should Baby from Supernatural be in the running for The Chariot?

Share with the class!

Yes I love this, I use the Supernatural deck from the TV show. Ooh a deck with the characters from the show Grimm, Nick could be the fool, Juliet the devil, Reynard the magician, that would be an awesome deck. Nice idea :green_heart:

Good idea! Who could Monroe be? I mean, he’s kinda The Hermit, living out on his own there. But I can also see the Hanged Man. He sacrificed a lot of his wolfy nature for wisdom.

Fun idea - pop culture Tarot cards! I love it!

I don’t use Tarot so can’t offer anything from pop culture that would tie into each card’s personality.

But I love the pop culture reference idea and might cheerfully steal it from you for a Lenormand deck, instead.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the Man card.

Wednesday from the Addams Family for the Child card.

… well. The mind buzzes. :joy:

Good luck with your new deck!

OOh! Picard can be the Emperor Card, sitting on his command throne!

And yes, I can see Wednesday and Pugsley playing for the Six of Cups. Any more wonderful ideas? For not knowing tarot, you’ve hit it out of the park!

Just wanted to update y’all on some ideas I’ve had.

The Fool - Donkey from Shrek.

Strength - Catherine Chandler and Vincent from Beauty and the Beast on TV.

Death - Lucien LaCroix from Forever Knight.
The Tower - Godzilla

The Four of Wands - The wedding after party in Mamma Mia.

The Four of Swords - Sleeping Beauty from Disney.
The Four of Pentacles - Ebenezer Scrooge from The Christmas Carol.

The Four of Cups - Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.

And for the Aces I’ve got -

The Ace of Wands - The Elder Wand from Harry Potter.

The Ace of Cups - The Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The Ace of Pentacles - Scrooge McDuck’s Number One Dime from Ducktales.

The Ace of Swords - Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi. Because the movies after that don’t count!

So I’m getting there! Some of my choices won’t fit others, because yeah, not many people have watched or remember Beauty and the Beast. Or if anyone here watched Forever Knight back in the day. But that’s the beauty of it! You figure it out for yourself and then, when you pull a card, it fits what YOU think of it, not me.

But yeah, just wanted to keep you updated!

I had a copy of the poetry CD decades before I saw the TV show. Loved it. Anyone who hasn’t seen it is in for a treat!

I have faith in nights.

I’d call them the Lovers card.

I was a teenager back then and I adored Vincent - and to this day I think Ron Perlman is one of the coolest actors. He also played Hellboy (I loved the movies) which is - just like Batman - the archetype of the anti-hero or dark hero: a troubled person, who battles inner darkness but still trys to do good for the world around them. Do we have someone like this in the tarot??

Oh, I totally can see this!!

I’ve got Gomez and Morticia Addams as the lovers card. Plus the whole, lady taming the lion thing was an image I liked.

Umm, King of Swords maybe. I think Hellboy is smart in his own areas. He wields that knowledge to protect others. I’ve put Batman as my King of Swords, at the very least.

An act of god with lightning! It fits! LOL!

See?

I’m not making myself a deck, so much as a reference list to help me figure out the cards. But yeah, I’d love to have the money to buy the cardstock and color ink to print this out, if only for myself!

Agreed! These make sense.

@Amethyst A couple are unfamiliar, and I might add in a few other kid’s movies, like the destruction of the castle complete with the freedom of the unicorns in The Last Unicorn for the Tower, simply because I see the destruction as a form of opening for freedom, returning magick to the world, and new construction. But I wanted to see what you’d see, through your eyes. :hugs: Your point has been that each person could make a whole deck from personal experience in the media. You are absolutely right! :+1::clap:

Ooooh, that´s a good one!!

Because archetypes inevitably show up in story-telling.

I like that! I’ve never watched that movie much because it’s so sad, that’s probably why it doesn’t fit in my head.

Yes! That’s it! You see the Last Unicorn, I see Godzilla, while someone else might see the Aliens blowing up the White House from Independence Day. Which I also thought of. But yeah, it’s all what you are comfy with, not everyone and their brother.
