Question about Forum Organization

I’m curious. The Recipes section is full of wonderful items with an occasional spell thrown in. It seems like the spells might get lost in the mix. Would it be an idea to create a section specifically for individual spells- similar to Q&A, Introductions, or General Discussion? Yes, I know we can search, but we cannot have spells by themselves emailed to us or placed on our watch list.

Hello @georgia,

Great question! Forum organization is split into two general types: categories and tags.

All posts in the forum exist within a category. Categories serve a very general overview with similar topics or styles being housed together. Categories don’t necessarily tell us much about what the post references as much as what purpose the post serves or how we interact with it. Activities, for example, contains interactive content that is meant to be directly engaged with, while Site Feedback & Announcements is the place to put technical questions or request staff assistance. Q&A contains posts where users are seeking answers while A Sacred Space houses more personal or sensitive content, etc.

Meanwhile, tags tell us what the post is about. They allow fast and specified searches to locate content in the forum about certain popular topics. On this note, we do have a tag for spells! By clicking this tag, a user can find all posts in the forum about spells - whether they are questions in Q&A, more sensitive spells in A Sacred Space, etc.

Just like categories, tags can also be placed on a watch list (or block list). Here is what it looks like in your forum account preferences:

Feel free to add the spells tag to your Watched Tags! Just a friendly heads up though, as this is a magickal forum and ‘spells’ is a very hot topic. Adding some of the more popular tags to your lists may result in a large number of notifications.

I hope this helps! Blessed be :sparkles:

Tried that. Doesn’t always work. Sometimes all I get are responses to the original post. We tried to fix that once: it worked a couple of days and broke again.

Edit: Checked again: when I typed in Spells under watching tags and tracking tags, an error message came up: no such thing.

I put Spells under tracked tags, and I get all the recipes.

There was recently a massive forum update, so it could be worth a fresh new try!

That being said, if a tag or category is being Watched, then notifications will also come in for any new posts/replies added to the discussion. “Watching First Post” may be a better option if you’d like to receive notifications about only the first post (and not replies).

A tag (or category) can either be Watched or Tracked - it cannot be both. If it is already being watched, it won’t show up or be selectable in Tracking.

Hmmm… Tracking spells should not give alerts to recipes if they don’t contain the tag. I’m going to look into this more - are you sure you’re not Watching/Tracking the Recipes category still? I’d suggest making sure that it’s removed from your preferences!

It’s not under either watched nor tracked

Never did.

Very good! Thanks for double checking  :+1:

Apologies for the confusion - Watched is both “Watched” and “Watching First Post”. It looks like from the screenshot that the spells tag is already being used in “Watching First Post”, so it will not appear/be selectable in the other options. I hope that helps clarify it!
