I was watching ( rewatching ) a video by hearth witch on types of witchcraft. She mentioned popculture witches and i was curious about peoples opinions and experiences on this and maybe how to explore further. It’s got me curious on how to incorporate pop culture into magic. So I thought id open up a question here to see what others think about the topic and/or experiences might have in this area.
Humans are using the same archetypes in storytelling since the beginning of..well…storytelling. So you can find the same archetypical characters in greek, roman or norse pantheons as in modern popculture. Especially the Marvel characters are very much archetypical figures, but of course also music stars!
For example Wonder Woman is the modern version of Goddess Diana, in this case they even made this part of her story.
The archetype of the nurturing mother goddess for example is frequently picked up in books and movies: Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter books pops into my mind. She embodies very much the nurturing, caring qualities, but also incredible strength and determination when it comes to protecting her loved ones.
A representative of the “Virgin” archetype would be Merida from the Disney movie, who is caught in the tension between autonomy and family. The bravery, the strong will, and the need to find her place in the world - this is typical for the Virgin Goddess; also Sabrina of Chilling Adventures falls into this archetype.
The easiest way to spot the archetype, that is calling you, that you´re resonating with is to watch your emotional response to movie or book characters. If a character moves you, thrills and inspires you, you´re on the right track. Sometimes an archetype can touch us so deeply, that they show up in our dreams or we even feel, like we want to be like that character.
So, this is a rather psychological and boring take on popculture, but
I found a video by the lovely Molly Roberts about this topic. Maybe you can find some information and inspiration here! ![]()
Check out Kelly Ann Maddox on YouTube, she’s a chaos witch and vibes with pop culture.

I use Law and Order characters to help my wards at home, with other characters like Batman and Ironman if I feel attacked. I’ve used other things, like a thing Yoda says about “never is your mind on the hear and now,” to help me focus on mindfulness.
Mostly I just use little bits of pop culture that I’ve picked up and that stick with me. Things that won’t leave my brain. Like, despite the fact that Ares is considered a so-called evil god, in the series Xena, if he wasn’t around to channel that aggression, it went unchecked. And ‘Dite could kick butt if she needed to.
The first time I even heard of Herne the Hunter was an old Robin Hood series I watched back in the 80s on rented VHS tapes. Sadly, now that I’m older, the series isn’t as good, but it’s one of the things that helped get me interested in magic and paganism.
For that matter, The Craft and Buffy the Vampire Slayer brought a lot of people in the 90s to magic. Tara for the win! (don’t get me started on Willow’s issues)
So I’d personally love to put more pop culture in my magic. I may have to look for a book now. LOL!
Thanks for this topic, it’s great!
