can spiritual guides be ghosts who were once living? or something else? could they be family members who were once living? or not likely?

Yes, while this is not a prevalent concept in Wicca, it’s a big deal in Spiritualism, where the main belief is that the dead are not gone but they continue to live around us in the form of spirits (meaning “souls”) and that we can communicate with them for various purposes.
If you’re open to the idea of an afterlife, then your spirit guide could indeed be someone who passed from this plane. Perhaps an ancestor who loves you and has decided to become your guide/mentor/protector during your lifetime. 
If you’ve ever been somewhere or near someone, and you felt your gut give you a bad feeling about that situation, that could have been a spirit guide sending you a warning or giving you advice.
It’s common to receive messages at random but willingly contacting your spirit guide can be a bit trickier. They may appear in dreams, during meditation, or you can try using different channels such as pendulums, tarot, or Ouija boards. All of these may or may not work for you. Go with your intuition and see what works best for you.

You’re very welcome! This is a very interesting topic. I believe in past lives and, it’s a bit unrelated but there’s a great book called Many Lives, Many Masters by Dr. Brian Weiss that explores the topic of reincarnation.

I have not replied in four years but something very traumatic has happened to me that has forever changed me and I don’t know what Is happening to me.
…On July 3,2024 I couldn’t sleep because my dog wouldn’t stop crying and kept walking up and down the hallway. I tried everything but couldn’t get him to stop. So I decided to meditate, it was 11:59pm when I went to my alter and sat down in an Indian pose. As I meditated I felt someone reach out and caress my head. It frightened me at first so I jumped up. I can literally feel fingers on my head but no one was there. I began to shake. I woke my husband he said he was asleep the whole time.
For the next three days my dog whined and paced the hallway but would stare at the corner of my room. Damn dog was freaking me out.
On July 6th 2024 1:30am I received a call from my son that my mother had not answered the phone for three days so the police kicked in the door… she’d been dead since July 3rd.
I’m the only child so I had to rush to her home 2 hours away. But when I returned my dog no longer acted strangely.
Is this real? Am I crazy?
Since she passed I’ve had a dream where I visited her in a far away place. It was so beautiful, she gave me a message …it was one word “speak “ .
It was so real but I know you can’t read in dreams but I could read and see numbers. What’s happening to me? Someone please help me

Yes and no. It likely was your mother reaching out to you when she passed. No, you are not crazy. It doesn’t happen to everyone (and it has yet to happen to me) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. So no, you are not crazy.
Those who’ve crossed over can visit us in dreams and this time of the year the veil between worlds is thin so it’s not unexpected to have a loved one visit or communicate through a dream. Often they want to comfort those left behind or communicate something they hadn’t the time to before.
I’ll search the forum to see if I can find other posts that might help you but wanted to let you know I hear you, I understand and we as a coven are here to support you.
