I have created a quiz that you might like to try. It will tell you which of the planets you are most like in terms of the traits that they represent in astrology. It is not perfect but might be fun to try out.
I got Venus which is actually the ruling planet of my sun sign, Taurus.

Out of interest, does the planet that you get match the ruler of your sun signs?
Not sure if this matches my sun sign or not. I don’t really know a lot about astrology. I know I’m a cancer that’s about it. Lol.

Jupiter not the ruler of cancer. However, jupiter is exhalted in cancer…bascially this means it is treated like a guest of honour in this sign.

The Moon

The questions weren’t easy, most of them really made me stop and think, or listen to that intuitive or emotional resonance. 
I think I’m going to redo it and journal about my choices. Sometimes I find journal prompts too open ended, it helps to have multiple choice answers, like different kinds of mirrors to see a reflection from and tell which parts look like me and which don’t. And which make me feel excited or averse, which hints that there’s something delicious to explore, which happened here too 
Thats a great idea. Reflecting on the answers you to determine how you currently view yourself and, in the future, will provide a comparison to determine whether personal growth or development has occured or whether priorities and values have altered. I am glad you found the quiz useful

It’s not the ruling planet of my sun sign (Scorpio), but I have a lot of water in my birth chart, so I’m not surprised to match with a water-aligned planet

No. I’m a Leo. Sun Ruler. Could it be that the disparity is what causes me such trouble making sense of my horoscope in general?

Rising in Scorpio.
The moon is neither strengthened nor weakened by Leo. Its what is called a peregrine placement where their is no extra ease or difficulty involved.
You are a scorpio rising though and scorpio is the worst placement for the Moon. You being like the moon vs your rising sign is essentially like moving abroad to a cointry with a compeltely different set of values to your own and one where you are not provided with the resources you need to progress.

Do you have any suggestions on how to handle it better when these feelings get most intense?
@georgia It would be interesting to look at the balance of elements of your chart as it sounds like you may have too much water that is perhaps not being balanced out with more objetctive fire air or grounded earth.
