Reading Tarot(Struggling to begin to understand)

Welcome, @Trey!

First things first- set any bad feelings or guilt aside. Know that tarot is an extremely complex art that takes years of studying and practice. And as we can see from looking back at old tarot books, it is constantly evolving and changing with the times! It may be said that one can never truly 100% master the cards and all of their interlocked, ever-changing, situationally-dependant meanings.

That being said, it is definitely possible to become comfortable enough with your deck that you feel confident with your readings

Personally, I see tarot as a balancing act :balance_scale: To confidently read tarot, you need three areas of skill, all of which can be developed through study and training:

  • Knowing the traditional meanings (gained through memorization)
  • Drawing on your intuition of the card (gained through experience)
  • Applying both of these to the situation of the reading (gained through practice)

I am still working on my tarot journey (and likely will be for a very, very long time!) but here are a few tips from one tarot enthusiast to another that may help you to deepen your practice:

Tarot Learning Tips

  1. Take a tarot course (like the Tarot Video Training)- but don’t just passively watch the videos. As you learn about each card, take the physical card from your deck and hold it in your hands. Pay close attention to each of the symbols, tracing them with your finger, and actively connect with the card :open_hands:

  2. Work with tarot every day (or as often as you can). Practice, practice, practice! Try different tarot spreads, consider making your own tarot spread, or just do a simple one-card reading. The more you work with the cards, the faster the meanings will stick! :flower_playing_cards:

  3. Consider improving your memory skills through memory training exercises :brain:

  4. Keep a Tarot Log/ Tarot Journal where you record each reading. Jot down the questions you asked, the cards you drew, a few summary words about their traditional meanings, any intuition you felt, and how you interpret the cards. Writing helps to build memory, and keeping a log means you can check back later to see how your interpretations played out! :open_book:

Tarot is a wonderful thing that, like any developing skill, can get frustrating at times. Stick with it, and don’t be afraid to try new things with your deck!

I’m cheering you on in your journey to learning tarot. Good luck, and blessed be! :sparkles:
