Sensory Magick

Hey you lovely lot,

I’m working on a new ritual (feel free to share your ingredients/methods for banishing), and it got me thinking again in that star sort of way, where I’m not thinking out of the box, I’ve turned the box into a star lol.

As always, it’s a simple question - how do I engage my senses in magick?

Feel
This is first because for me, it is different to what you touch. I think it encompasses all the senses - they combine and result in the emotion you feel when performing magick. Are you happy, serene, peaceful, anxious, unsure… and ask yourself, what do I need, to get to the emotion I want to feel? Maybe I need to examine what I’m looking at, or smelling, etc. Also, I always ask myself if I can feel my psychic protection - if I can’t, it needs a recharge, reboot or an upgrade.

Sight
What do I see - what is visually and aesthetically pleasing to my eyes? Nature is always grounding for me, but I also love bubbles…so if I want to ground myself, a willow tree in the park would be useful, if I want joy then maybe I’m blowing bubbles in my bedroom and yes I still do that lol. It might also be worth exploring the things which evoke negative reactions, and the best things to look at/visualise to neutralise the negativity.

Smell
Like everything else, the right smell can evoke feelings of comfort, nostalgia, joy and everything in between. For example, during astral travel practice I use Dragon’s Fire essential oil because of it’s mystical smell; when I need comfort, I use Sage because it reminds me of a home I neither know nor remember well lol. For that cleansing, refreshing smell, I don’t think you can beat lemon or mint (I’m old skool like that, if it ain’t broke leave it)… ask yourself which smell matches your intention.

Taste
Now this is the one that I thought long and hard about, because I’ve never thought about it before. I’m usually drowning in my cup of lemon tea, because that stuff tastes like actual nectar from the Heavens to me and it’s practically all I drink lol. And then I really started to think…there’s no rule against blessing and consecrating food as a tool during spellwork, right? For example… chocolate? Right now your eyes are as wide as mine were when I had that thought, like mind blown, imagine the possibilites!! All of a sudden, advent calendars have a whole other use to me, keep the spell going everyday…I’ll leave your imagination train to runaway with that…

Sound
Just as powerful in evoking memories and feelings…for me, the sounds of the forest and the sea are perfection, the very center of serenity. For healing, the sounds of kundalini guided meditation and the chakra noises. There are times when I need to let loose with a little Limp Bizkit, for cleaning it’s usually soca gospel…during magick, I’m usually aiming for serenity and reverence so I stick to nature because it works for me, ask yourself what works for you. Might also be worth exploring how you’re hearing it - are you blasting it through speakers to fill the room, or more intimate and private with in-ear headphones - or somewhere in between, loud enough to drown out the sounds of the world, quiet enough to hear the door knock or the phone ring.

Touch
What am I physically touching during my magick? Sometimes it’s enough to feel the energy in my hands after I rub them together, sometimes I need more; a wand, a crystal, a rune or card…something I can physically put my hands on. And on the other hand, what is touching me - how do my clothes feel against my skin, do I need clothes (e.g. you don’t in the shower during cleansing rituals), what am I sitting on (soft like a bed, hard like the floor or somewhere in between)… becoming aware of what helps or hinders during magick can only make it stronger, right?

In theory, if I can engage each sense in the optimal way, then maybe that will enhance the magick? Or maybe it won’t change a thing except my awareness lol!

I would think that even just one or two of these senses focused on your magic would enhance it! This is an awesome idea!

You’re very welcome, hope it helps! :purple_heart:

Thank you! That was the hope, to aim to engage at least 2 of the senses… maybe I’ll even take a scientific approach to it, ooo that could be fun! If I could find a way to accurately measure success - or what I equate to success - then I could test each sense to see if there’s any enhancements compared to magick without the sensory engagement…I sound like a right nerd! :see_no_evil_monkey:

Hey, it’s been said that magic is science we don’t understand yet. And there’s a bit of physics in chaos magic at least, I think. So why not using the senses? Makes sense (LOL!!) to me! After all, a song and a scent can bring up a memory better than just about anything else.

So true! Maybe that could be a side hustle to this “study” - first examine the effects of the senses indicidually, then see what happens with different combinations… this could totally turn into a thing!

Completely agree!
